Cambridgeshire Completed Lookups / SCOTTs in Haddenham c1800
« on: Friday 22 September 06 22:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My Great Great Grandad, Thomas SCOTT was born in Haddenham c1797, a son to John and Ann SCOTT.
I am hoping that someone will have the church/chapel records of Haddenham for that time  and could check to see if Thomas had any siblings, please. Also a marriage for his parents would be nice.
Thanks

Somerset / Samuel SAINT and Jane WEST
« on: Friday 15 September 06 11:23 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the marriage of a Samuel SAINT to a Jane WEST probably 1830-1837 (just before civil registration!!).
I have the birth certificate for a Thomas Charles SAINT in 1838 which gives his parents as Samuel SAINT and Jane (formerley WEST). He was born in Yeovil, Somerset.
I know that Samuel SAINT was baptised 23 Aug 1801 in Sherborne, Dorset.
I know Thomas Charles (sometimes transcribed as Charles Thomas) had an older sister Mary Ann and a younger brother Samuel.
So I found the family on the 1841 census in Somerset.
They had emigrated to Australia before the 1851 census.
What I would really like to find is a marriage for Samuel SAINT and Jane WEST.
I don't know if Samuel and Jane married in Dorset or Somerset but the 1841 census says all the children were born in Somerset but Samuel and Jane were born out of county.

Any ideas?
Thanks for any help.

Norfolk / Elsing - Jack HALL (AKA John Chaplain)
« on: Tuesday 05 September 06 10:38 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me. I am trying to help a friend. He is keen to know anything about Jack HALL who was a character who lived in Mill Street, Elsing.  He was born c1892. His real name was John CHAPLAIN, but known to all the locals as Jack HALL. He was a recluse and although only a casual farm labourer, he paid a mortgage on 2 cottages. If anyone has any info on him and especially any photos of him, I would be delighted and will pass this info on to my friend.

I think I have found him on the 1901 census -

living at Sparham Hole -
Jonathan Hall 58 Ag lab born Whitwell
Edith A Chaplain 36 Housekeeper Bawdeswell
John Chaplain 9 Sparham

My friend is also interested in anything about Elsing past, so please pass on any memories or knowledge to me.

Thanks

Norfolk / How to find out WHO the father was
« on: Friday 11 August 06 13:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
If a child was born in the Gressenhall Workhouse in 1903, and the mother was unmarried, would there have been any attempt to get money or help from the father of the child?
The mother was living in Bawdeswell in 1901 with her parents and siblings. She married in Brandon, Suffolk in 1903, 5 months after giving birth. I wonder how likely it was that the man she married WAS the father of her child.
Would there have been any court case to get the father to pay up? Or what?
Any help appreciated.

PS I have been in touch with Gressenhall Museum and they reckon that their 1903 records are missing - wouldn't you know it!!

Norfolk / Arthur William FINCHAM born 1895
« on: Wednesday 12 April 06 18:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for information of Arthur William FINCHAM born 31 March 1895 in Brandon, Suffolk. He was the son of Charles William FINCHAM and Agnes Rose MASON. In 1915 Charles William and his 2nd wife took the younger children to Birmingham BUT  I believe Arthur stayed in Norfolk or Suffolk - In 1901 the family was living in Brandon but in 1908 had moved to West Tofts in Norfolk. Arthur's half sister is still alive aged 95. It would be wonderful to find some of Arthur's descendants.
I have found 3 possible marriages all in Erpingham district, Norfolk  -
1913 to a Miss COOPER
1914 to a Miss SMITH
1915 to a Miss TOWNSEND.
I would be happier to find a marriage in Thetford district or there abouts.
Any help truly appreciated.
Thanks
