Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Emigration in 1904
« on: Tuesday 14 October 14 15:52 BST (UK)  »
I am researching emigration from Liverpool in 1904. Lots of ships left for New York, but none give records of steerage passengers.

I believe that migrants from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia came to Hull and from there by train to Liverpool where they were put in boarding houses until they got a passage.

I remember my grandmother telling me how her mother used to take her down to the Pier Head where she saw 'pens' full if people talking in foreign languages.  She said the noise was horrendous!

Any help us appreciated.
Thank you.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Sarah Condie
« on: Tuesday 14 October 14 15:46 BST (UK)  »
My gt grandmother Sarah Condie lost her husband and child in 1903. In the 1911 census she has moved house from Squires St to Lorton St in Liverpool.  I wonder how people found alternative accommodation in those days, were there classified ads?

She was working as a chocolate packer in 1911 and wondered which manufacturer she may have worked for.  I am bit sure how to research this.  I wonder if she worked from home, but she did have an older person in the house who could look after her son. Her daughter was living elsewhere as a maid of all work.

I know she managed to stay out of the workhouse after her husband died, something to do with signing the pledge and getting some money for doing so.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Fife / Inverkeithing Orphanage
« on: Friday 18 July 14 11:30 BST (UK)  »
I am helping a friend find an ancestor who was in the above orphanage and then shipped out to Canada.  Edmund and Annie (aged about 5 & 6 at the time in the early 1900's) were taken to Greenock on the pretext of going on holiday and there put on a ship to Canada.  Edmund was taken by a Mr Leishmann and Annie was taken away by a woman and Edmund never saw his sister again.  We wonder if anyone can help trace Annie.  We do not know their original surname, although there were a lot of Leishman's in the area and Edmund could have gone to a relative.  he eventually came back to England and settled in Devon.
Many thanks!

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Moses Xerxes
« on: Thursday 24 October 13 14:44 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find some further information on Moses, who lived in Bentley, Hampshire.  He married an Elizabeth Hawkins on 25th November 1766 and they had 6 children, but I can find no birth for him.
The name is very unusual, and all the Xerxes in Hampshire today are descended from him.  I found a slave record for a Xerxes, but this was in the 19th century, and Moses birth is thought to be around 1740 and there is a death of a Moses Xerxes aged 48 in Yately.  I am wondering if he was of foreign extraction and he came over as a freed slave/servant.  There is a family rumour that there was a Spanish connection in the family and I wonder if this is where it came from, although the only Xerxes I know is a Persian king!

England / Cecil Ernest Lucas Phillips
« on: Thursday 26 September 13 12:08 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a birth date for the above person for a friend, who is his grandson.  He was a writer of books - war, gardening and seems to be quite prolific.  I can find his books, but not a birth date.  The friend has told me his wife was called Barbara, born in 1899 and she died in 2001 in Dorset.  Cecil died in the early 1980's but not sure of his birthdate. He believes he may have been born in the West Indies.  Cecil lived in Oxshott, Surrey for most of his life.

Many Thanks!

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Thomas Giffen/Giffin
« on: Thursday 29 August 13 11:14 BST (UK)  »
Following on from my Essex post, on further research I have discovered that a Thomas Giffin (the spellings change all the time) was born in Whaddon Cambridgeshire in 1785 and christened in September 1786.  As Whaddon is next to Bassingbourne, this looks the likelier candidate.

Essex Lookup Requests / Thomas Giffen/Giffin

I am tracing my husband's 3xgt grandfather above, who, I believe was born in Mountfitchet, Stansted in 1791.  He married a Catherine Randall in 1809 in Bassingbourne, Cambridgeshire.  they appear to have had several children, many of whom died.  His son Joseph, is the direct line.

many thanks

World War One / Casualties sent to Malta in WWI
« on: Sunday 14 April 13 16:46 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a war record for Reuben James Peddar.  I know he was injured in WWI when the wheel of a gun rolled over his stomach and after suffering ill health afterwards, he died in 1928 at 51 years of age.
I have a photo of him in uniform (high collar and a lanyard) which was taken in Malta.  i have since discovered that soldiers badly wounded, expecially at Gallipoli and Salonika were taked to Malta to recuperate.  I can find no military record of him, but he lived in Hertfordshire, and I know that a 54th Division East Anglian regiment (I think it was part of the Territorial Army) went to Gallipoli.  Perhaps that is why there is no record.  The other regiments appear to be from Ireland and the Borders, so I wouldn't think he would have joined those.

Many thanks
Carole
