The Common Room / Advice on how to annotate group photos please
« on: Thursday 24 November 22 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
I've recently come across my parents' wedding group photo and thought I'd try and produce a key to go alongside noting who the people are (not that I know all of them).

There are about 40 faces and I am trying to work out how best to do this.  I've scanned the photo and printed it out and have considered attaching small numbered adhesive labels but is there an easy to use (preferably free) way of labelling the image electronically?  Eventually I'd like to send copies to cousins who may be able to identify more of the faces.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give  :)

London & Middlesex Resources / Frederick Jury born Bermondsey 1873
« on: Saturday 12 September 15 23:35 BST (UK)  »
I've just read something really interesting about a luggage tag found when mudlarking on the Thames and the research done to find out about the owner Frederick Jury.  Thought I'd post about it here in case he appears in a Rootschatter's tree.

It's entitled 'The life of Frederick Jury' and was posted today on the fascinating site www.spitalfieldslife.com. Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did  :)

Surrey / Webb & Rassell, Tobacconists, High Street Reigate around WW1
« on: Wednesday 13 May 15 19:33 BST (UK)  »
I recently discovered that my father's uncle was the Rassell partner of Webb & Rassell, a tobacconists in High Street Reigate prior to WW1.  I had found rare cigarette cards on the internet that were produced by Webb & Rassell and never realised the company was connected with our branch of the family until I found an obituary of my great-uncle who died at Arras in the war.

I've been trying to find out more about the company/shop/partnership but without much success.  I found the oldreigate.com website and many photos of the high street but not been able to find their premises.

Do you have any idea where I might find any more information about Webb & Rassell?  It seems odd that a small concern would produce cigarette cards (only one set of 50 "War Portraits" cards) if it were just a local tobacconists.  Grateful for any information or pointers where I might look.

Thanks for reading

Devon Lookup Requests / Bastardy Bond at Devon Heritage Centre
« on: Friday 01 May 15 23:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello,  I've found reference to a bastardy bond on Find My Past which could well refer to an ancestor of mine. It's held at Devon Heritage Centre, ref QS 16/11/20 regarding Sarah Ryder and John Parnell dated19/04/1854. Do you know whether it's possible to obtain a copy by post or would I have to travel from Berkshire in person? I can see on the website when the phone lines are open but no number to ring!
Grateful for any help you can give
Thanks for reading, Heather

Hi all
I've been looking at the Will of an ancestor dated 1824 who had 'Freehold Messuage or Tenement situate lying and being in Duncan Street in the parish of Kingston in the County of Southampton" and am trying to find where it was.  At the beginning of the will it says he is from the Parish of Kingston in Duncan Street near the town of Portsea in the County of Southampton.  I can't find anything on modern or old maps so maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.  There is a Duncan Road in Southsea, might that be Duncan Street in a more modern reincarnation?

I'd be grateful for any help you can give, many thanks!

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Tetbury grave help please
« on: Sunday 04 January 15 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, my grandfather was buried at St Mary's Church, Tetbury in 1943.  I was wondering whether any Rootschatters live nearby and would be so kind as to take a photograph or describe to me whether the headstone is still there?  My Dad says the grave is up the steps from the road and about 3rd or 4th row on the right hand side.  Grandfather's name was Augustus Henry Rassell. I plan to visit later in the year and maybe take my Dad there too but wanted to find out what's there before we make the journey if possible.
Many thanks

Can some kind soul please advise what the following might mean from my Grandfather's WW1 Medals Roll Index card?

Name: Rassell, Augustus

Rank: Pte
Date of Discharge: 8.1.19

Cause of Discharge: P392(xxUA) KR
                              A. SO 29/19

Obviously I can make out the dates and believe he was in the Norfolk Regiment but other than that can anyone decipher the codes for Cause of discharge and Action taken please?

Many thanks in advance

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Thomas Rassell look ups please
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
Having seen the brilliant information Nell found about the Cutler family, I wondered if there might be some entries regarding the Rassell family?  Here's what I know so far:

My G x3 Grandfather was Thomas Flight (later Rassell) b.1771 in Fawley, Hampshire.  I have a copy of the bastardy bond referring to him that mentions his mother Mary Flight and father Thomas Rassell jnr (also of Fawley) and also his grandfather Thomas Rassell snr of South Hayling.  Both Thomas Rassells were salt duty officers.

I'd be really grateful for any entries regarding the Rassell or Flight family.  I know Thomas jnr married Mary Withers in 1773 in Portsmouth but can't find any information about his father or possible siblings.

Many thanks in advance
Heather  :)
