Hi,
I live in Canada where the Kerr family arrived in about 1854. Therefore, I rely on a combination of old family letters and the internet.
Some background before I ask my question.
John Kerr (1801-1877) and his wife Mary Gowanlock (1801-1879), raised their family at Grahamshall, Hoddam, until they moved to Redhall in Wigton, Cumberland. John and Mary were both buried in the St Mungo Churchyard.
John's brother, Thomas (1817-1881) was born in St Mungo, died at Redhall, Cumberland and was buried St Mungo Churchyard. A nephew wrote the following note:
Sir,
Thomas Kerr, my Uncle, Died here this Morning, and his remains are to be interred in St. Mungo's Church Yard, on Saturday, the 15th current.
The favour of your company at Ecclefechan Station to meet the Train, which will stop there by arrangement at 10.5 o'clock a.m. will oblige.
Sir,
Your obedient servant.
Family notes state that Thomas' wife died in Australia in 1865. Other notes state he was in NewZealand and had several children. Some children names: Jean, John, Madelene.
My question: If anyone has access to St Mungo churchyard, I am wondering if anywhere Thomas' wife and/or children might be mentioned? I have searched extensively and been unable to find even her first name. Thomas was in England in 1843 (from Father's will) so may have married there, in NZ or Aust. His wife died in Australia in 1865.
Probate mentions a nephew John Hayward and his parents were William Kerr and Phillis Bell.
Any help/advice would be welcomed.
