United States of America / New Jersey death, maybe
« on: Friday 03 November 23 14:42 GMT (UK)  »
Did this woman die in New Jersey?
Mary Ann Carroll, born October 1, 1894, County Armagh, Ireland, daughter of Bernard Carroll and Brigid Hollywood.

Her US Social Security information in 1942 said October 11, 1897.
She said she was born October 31, 1897, when she declared her intention to become a citizen in Newark, New Jersey, in 1924.

She was working as a nurse in Maplewood Township, NJ in 1950. Her sister Bridget Teresa was working at the same institution.
That is the last I have of her. The only date on her Social Security information is 1942.

They had at least an uncle in New Jersey, so there could have been a death notice.
Mary Ann died before her brother Michael in October 1992, since his death notice only mentions one surviving sister.
Bridget died in England in 1996.
Thank you.

edit - I don't think Bernard and Brigid had two children named Mary Ann. I looked through all the 1890s for children of that couple.

United States of America / Patrick Carroll, d 1928, Chicago
« on: Friday 08 September 23 14:22 BST (UK)  »
Could someone see if there is an obituary for this man? I didn't find one in the index at newspapers.com. I'm mainly looking for the names of his siblings and a specific birthplace, more specific than Co. Armagh, Ireland.

Illinois, Cook County Deaths, 1871-1998
12 July 1928, in Chicago
Patrick Carroll, 50, married, born in Ireland
residence: 5134 S Wood, Chicago
Occupation: Milk Dealer
Father: Owen Carroll
Mother: Mary Quinn
Spouse: Mary Carroll
Informant: Joseph E Carroll
Buried: 16 Jul 1928, Mount Olivet, Chicago, Illinois
Funeral Home   Schroeder-Thompson
Entry Number   21702

The age is all wrong by the way. He was born about 1865 according to all his other records.

----------------
The "rest of the story" -
Transcribed records for Patrick say he was born in "Fort Hill" Ireland, and in Co. Armagh. The images are not online.  His wfe was born about a mile from Forkhill, Armagh.  I think he is the brother of Elizabeth "Lizzie" Carroll, baptized 1 September 1868, Dromintee Catholic Parish, Forkhill Civil Parish, Co. Armagh, daughter of Owen Carroll and Anne Quinn.

For where I have looked so far for Lizzie see the thread on the Co Armagh board:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=876168.0

I have the censuses for Patrick and his wife Mary through 1940 and am filling in the children's births, marriages, etc.

Armagh / Where is Lizzie Carroll after 1908?
« on: Saturday 02 September 23 12:19 BST (UK)  »

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Carroll was baptized as Bess Carroll 1 September 1868 in Dromintee Catholic Parish, Armagh, the daughter of Owen Carroll and Anne Quinn. The civil birth record shows they lived in Carrickastickan Townland, Forkhill Civil Parish.

On March 3, 1908, the Armagh Guardian reported that Lizzie Carroll had been arrested for abandoning a child with a woman on Banbrook, town of Armagh. The September 28, 1908, Ulster Gazette reported her sentencing to one month's imprisonment for doing so.

Lizzie disappears after that and was said to have "gone to America."

I know these two Lizzies are the same person because the person I am helping is the grandson of the child who was abandoned. He has a second cousin DNA match with a grandson of Lizzies's brother Bernard. That man does not know what happened to Lizzie.

We are not looking for information regarding the child. We have everything we need there and would like to keep his name out of this thread. We have his birth, workhouse record, the name of the woman he was put in care of, and his 1911 census with the woman's family. If you find anything else about him that would help us find Lizzie, please PM me instead of posting it here.

-------------
What we know so far that might help: Lizzie's father Owen died 25 December 1882, her mother on 8 April 1888, both in Carrickastickan. Her older brother Bernard took over the farm and remained there until his death in 1946. Lizzie had 3 other siblings:

Catherine Carroll, born 20 April 1872 and died 31 March 1886, both in Carrickastickan.

Patrick Carroll, born 7 March 1864, Carrickastickan. He was the informant when his sister Catherine died and is not found after that. I didn't find him anywhee on the 1901 Census of Ireland or on the civil marriage or death records up to 1922.

Anne Carroll, born 29 May 1866, Carrickastickan. Similar story. I didn't find her on the 1901 or 1911 censuses of Ireland or the civil marriage or death records up to 1922.

-----------
I looked for her as Bess, Lizzie, Elizabeth, and Eliza Carroll on the 1910 Census of the US, and the 1911 censuses of England, Wales, Scotland, and Canada. There are four possible matches in Scotland in 1911 but I am holding off looking for them since scotlandspeople is a paid site. Scotland was never mentioned as a place Lizzie went and I haven't found any connection between Scotland and this family.

I've also looked on the UK outgoing passenger list at ancestry, and the US immigration passenger manifests.

I haven't looked on any Australian records, since I am not familiar with them at all. But I don't see a reason why she would go that far.

---------------
She is very likely not this person:
1911 Residents of a house 16 in Aghayalloge (Killevy, Armagh)
Lizzie Carroll, 35, head, domestic servant, single
Francis Carroll, 8, son, scholar
both Roman Catholic, both born in Armagh
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Armagh/Killevy/Aghayalloge/304244/

Her age is off by 8 years and there is no mention of an older child at her trial.

That woman could be:
Elizabeth Carroll, baptism 5 December 1875, Ballymacnab, Armagh, daughter of James Carroll and Catherine McKenna

-------
I really don't think she is either of these two women on the 1910 US Census.
Lizzie Carroll, a nun in Omaha, Nebraska, qualified at the time to be a teacher. Lizzie was a domestic servant when arrested.

Elizabeth Carroll, age 42, in 1910 in Manhattan and says she arrived at age 2
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M5WG-R44

----------
She is not the Lizzie Carroll who arrived in Vancouver in 1918. That woman was born in Co. Antrim, had last lived in New Zealand, and had been in California in 1903.
She is not the woman who arrived in New York in 1909 and 1918 who was with the Salvation Army. On the 1910 of Manhattan, NYC, she said she arrived in 1887. The Carrolls were Catholic.

Thank you for reading this far and for your help.

United States of America / Edward and John Coffey, children, of Manhattan, died 1930
« on: Tuesday 31 January 23 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Was there a newspaper article that would explain how and where these two boys died? Edward was 12 or 13, John was about 7. Edward died 27 August 1930 (source: his Mass card and the family headstone). John died sometime in 1930 (source: the headstone). I am mainly interested in the cause of death.

headstone at findgrave: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/227018446/edward-coffey

I didn't find either of them listed at
The Italian Genealogical Group, https://www.italiangen.org/databases/, The NYC Historical Vital Records Project, https://a860-historicalvitalrecords.nyc.gov/, or at familysearch.

Either I missed them somehow or they died outside city limits. They were both living with their parents in 1930 in Manhattan:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24QM-ZCL.

Could they have died together in a summertime accident of some kind somewhere besides New York City?

---------
Also: their mother Margaret (Hughes) Coffey died 3 May 1969 and was buried from a funeral home on Broadway, NYC. (source: a Mass card again.) It's too recent for a death certificate online, but was there an obituary that hinted at her cause of death?

Thank you

United States of America / Michael J Haughey, d 1934, Queens NY
« on: Thursday 22 December 22 21:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. Did this man have a death notice or obituary?

Michael J Haughey, who died April 10, 1934, in a hospital in Queens. He was living with his son John J. at the time.

The family has a lot of information about him and his children in the US, except for Michael's death. I have found the certificate at the NYC municipal records site with that date on it.

Thank you.

United States of America / Fred Goodsmith, died October 8, 1944, in Georgia
« on: Monday 05 December 22 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Fred J Goodsmith was born October 9, 1884, in Cleveland, Ohio, and is said to have died October 8, 1944, in Georgia. Did he get a death notice? Does it say where he was buried?

Probably not with his ex wife Gertrude Egert, but is he buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Bedford Hts, Ohio, with his 2nd wife Dorothy who died "suddenly in Florida" in December 1952? I have her death notice from the Cleveland Press of December 17, 1952.

Thank you.

United States of America / James Crimm, born 1879 in Massachusetts
« on: Wednesday 19 October 22 16:32 BST (UK)  »
Could someone else please take a look for this child? I can't find him anywhere but on this census. I looked on familysearch for his birth, searching for James Cr*m*, with and without a mother's name of Mary, and didn't find him.

1880 Census, Boston
on Northfield St

James Crimm, boarder, age 1, born in Massachusetts, father in Ireland, mother in Mass
Mary F White, 37, married, born in Mass, parents also, keeping house
William H White, son, 13, born in Mass, father in New York, mother in Mass.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MHXR-7JN

I have a James Crimm/Jenkins in Boston (b1854 - d1916), my wife's great grandfather. I wonder if this 1 year old is somehow his son. James was married in November 1880 to Catherine Carrigan.

Thank you.

United States of America / Thomas Dyal and Maria (Dyal) Reed
« on: Tuesday 30 August 22 18:35 BST (UK)  »
Did either of these two people have an obituary? They are brother and sister and I am looking for their parents' names, which are said to be John Dyal and Maria Allbaugh. I have found a Maria Dyal with her family in 1850 so I think I am on the right track.

Thomas Dyal died 17 May 1898, in Topeka, Kansas
Maria (Dyal) Reed died July 28, 1903, in Abilene, Kansas.

Thank you.

United States of America / Dudley Anderson descendants
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 17:17 BST (UK)  »
Are there obituaries for any of these people? I'm looking for descendants of Evelyn (Carroll) Meader. I don't think she had children but want to look further.

her father:
William Dudley Anderson, aka, Robert "Bobbie" Carroll,
born April 23, 1867, Richmond VA
died March 19, 1932, in Chicago.
[his obituary, if there was one, should be interesting]

herself:
Evelyn (Carroll) Meader, b 24 August 1904, d 14 March 1936, Chicago, wife of Arthur J Meader.

her husband:
Kankakee County, Illinois Death Index, 1870-1992
Name:   Arthur J Meader
Death Date:   30 Apr 1974
spouse of Jessie Cuperus.

I've seen Arthur Meader's 1940 Census with no children in the household.

I'm still working on Evelyn's mother, Sarah Jacobs aka Lillie Birchfield.
I have her marriage in 1901 in Bell County, Texas, to W D Anderson, in 1920 with Robert Carroll, and in 1930 with Arthur and Evelyn Meader, but nothing else.

Sarah Jacobs and Dudley Anderson were actors/performers. Bobbie Carroll and Lily Birchfield were their stage names.
