Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1729 Overseers page
« on: Wednesday 17 January 24 00:50 GMT (UK)  »
I've attached part of a page from the overseers accounts for Symondsbury, Dorset for Dec 1729.  It's not a good copy but was the best I could get from the LDS website.  The entry is the 4th one down.  It starts Paid [for] ........ for George Cordlon and his family in the time of sickness.

I just can't make out what the second word is and would be grateful for any help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1654 marriage
« on: Saturday 30 December 23 19:16 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone help me with the surname of the bride in this marriage entry from Symondsbury, Dorset on 15 Feb 1654/55.
The entry reads Jonathan Curland & Tamfon (Tamson) ........ marryed.

I just can't make out the bride's surname - I've looked at a guide to handwriting in the 1600s and the best I can come up with is that it starts with a small letter b.  It's been transcribed as Leves and Benet in indexes to Symondsbury marriages I've checked.

I'd appreciate some opinions.  I've included as much of the surrounding writing as I could.
Many thanks

Could someone help me with the words in the 2nd line after the name Robert Damett.  Is it a place name?  If it is, it's somewhere in Dorset or maybe even Devon.
Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1702 Settlement Certificate
« on: Sunday 22 October 23 02:09 BST (UK)  »
I have transcribed a settlement certificate but there are a few spots which have defeated me and I have attached them.
The first one I think reads "his better livelihood, maintenance, and …..  of living to inhabit in your said parish of Stoke Abbas by your permission and leave; for the furtherance".  What is the missing word please?
The second one reads "Beaminster do promise for our … and ….: to you the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the parish of Stoke Abbas and your … = that if at".  Again could someone fill in the missing words please?
Many thanks

Dorset / Hearth Tax & earlier Tax records
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 01:55 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone know if the Heath Tax for Dorset is online?  I've tried google but not found anything worthwhile.  The same for the Tudor Grant Subsidies of the 1500s.  I've finally found ancestors that far back and would like to flesh them out a bit.  I'm in Australia so going to my local library and finding them in book form is not available to me.
Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with 1623 baptism please
« on: Wednesday 04 October 23 08:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Could anyone transcribe the attached baptism please?  It is the one directly about the year "1624".  Ancestry has transcribed it as Henry son of Hema and Ann Greene and I'd like to know how accurate that is.  It is from the PR of Charminster, Dorset.
Many thanks

Ayrshire / Lookup for Pre 1855 Monumental Inscriptions in Kilmarnock & Loudoun
« on: Friday 21 July 23 07:30 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone have a copy of the booklet "Pre 1855 Gravestone Inscriptions in Kilmarnock and Loudoun District" which I believe includes Kilmaurs Cemetery and could do a lookup please?

I have found my listed as family as Robert Parker died 1825 and Mary Ramage/Rammage died 1829 in the Kilmaurs Cemetery as part of the Ancestry.com Scotland, Burial Monument Inscriptions database.  It shows a photo of a very weathered gravestone and I am hoping that more information may have been recorded from the gravestone back in the 1980s.  This booklet was published by the Scottish Genealogy Society.
Thank you for any help.

Staffordshire / Place in Wolverhampton - The Lanes??
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 02:27 BST (UK)  »
Looking at the parish registers of St Peters Wolverhampton for baptisms in 1745 I can see that a number of entries have the parents "of the Lanes" (see attached two scans).  Could this have been a place in the 1740s?  I'd be grateful for any help.
Thanks
