Northumberland / William MASON wed Mary KING circa 1833 in Tynemouth?
« on: Sunday 20 January 19 08:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, wondering if I can get some assistance on a lookup pls?......

I am trying to find the marriage reg. between William Mason and Mary King both from Tynemouth which I believe occurred in Tynemouth around 1833........reason for that belief being their son, Joseph William King Mason was born there in 1834. I do not know of any older children or whether he was the first so took that date as the latest the marriage could have been.

Aside from his birth record, I have all his certificates which gave me his parents etc and was hoping to work back from their marriage once I had a registration number to apply.

What I do know ...

father : William MASON occupation Grocer of Tynemouth
mother : Mary KING also of Tynemouth ...unfortunately no ages on either

Have found a possible birth/baptism of William MASON as 11 Apr 1803, died Jan 1872 Tynemouth but there is no corresponding Will/Probate I could see on his name and occupation; equally I do not have census access for verification at this stage so was hoping to start with his marriage to KING

Anyway if some kind soul could please point me in the right direction, of offer suggestions as to where I can start, would be most appreciative thanks......Tom

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help on Death Extract Please
« on: Friday 18 July 14 06:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Wondering if someone could please help me decipher a particular surname on this 1913 Death Extract

I only scanned the headings for reference purposes but my interest lies in the second one with the Informant Mary Ann Smith...the difficult bit is the name of the husband she first Married in Column 12 as well as the other details....

Managed to work out the marriage occurred in Tasmania - but what the grooms full name is has me tossed...John Barby perhaps???

Any clues or suggestions would help as I am not able to access the Tasmanian marriage records at this time.

Australia / BROOKS, Mary Jane - arrived South Aust. 11 May 1849
« on: Saturday 17 May 14 07:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Am trying to trace the family of Mary Jane BROOKS who arrived with her family in South Australia on the vessel Stebenheath (11/5/1848 - sailed from Plymouth on 31/1/1849)

Have found several references for their arrival which show Mary Jane BROOKS acted as the nurse on the voyage and travelled with her mother Frances and (assumed) brothers Henry, William, Thomas and Benjamin.

I do not have access to any SA records and have not been able to track them down past that nor work back to see where they came from - am assuming Frances was a widow and the children including Mary Jane were orphans at the time of arrival - as they were all listed as adults in shipping details (sourced per TROVE)

The SA Shipslist (http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/stebonheath1849.shtml ) likewise does not show them as a family

Was hoping to trace their origins to see if they were related to another BROOKS line currently researching (from Gloucestershire to Victoria)

Would appreciate any help please with accessing SA records.......tks ....Tom

Hi...

Having difficulty tracing the parents of Elizabeth GILES who was born about 1825 in Plymouth Devon and was hoping someone could assist please.

The only information on her has come from her Victorian Marriage Certificate in 1855 to a William Glover (have separately posted and also a query regarding Deciphering that certificate here : http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=665867.0 ) she stated she was 30 years old at that time and born in Plymouth Devon.

Her father was John Giles a Mariner and mother Elizabeth (surname illegible)

Have not been able to find her arrival in Australia nor death (possibly Victoria) which occurred between 1863 and 1902 (from her husbands Death Certificate) but hoping to find her and her family in Plymouth and then working out her mothers maiden name from that - perhaps a marriage reference for John and Elizabeth so I can get the Registration if possible and then trace the family from that and identify any siblings.

There are various possibilities for John Giles listed on FindMyPast but was hoping to narrow them down somewhat by a birth registration number for Elizabeth and then obtaining Certificates etc..

The 1841 Census hasn't proved helpful and quite possible her father John Giles, being a mariner; was not at home when the census fell nor Elizabeth who would have been about 16 - so the family is not listed together (that I could find  ??? ).

Possible Christening on IGI for 1 June 1828 in Ashburton Devon with a John Giles and Elizabeth as parents but that is 3 years later than the year I have and does not mention a maiden name so any help or suggestions in finding this family and in particular her birth would be appreciated thanks... Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help date old soldier please.......
« on: Tuesday 01 October 13 02:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have posted a photo of a soldier on the Army forum and have attached a link to it here:-

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=663076.new#new

Hoping someone on that forum could identify the uniform he wears but additionally am trying to place an approximate date on when the photo was most likely taken.

Unfortunately there is no photographers stamp or other identifying material on the photo or the backing but believed taken in Victoria Aus.....possibly Geelong or Ballarat from similar backdrop photos in the collection it was with...but that's only a suggestion though....may have been all the photographers at that time had similar backdrops and vases  ???.

Any help in dating our soldier or identifying his uniform would be appreciated thanks.......Tom

ps...sorry about the quality but he's a bit faded with age....happens to most of us eventually  ::)

Ireland / William Hopwood TOOLE, circa 1824, Ireland
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 06:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find details for William Hopwood TOOLE and his family in Ireland

Details obtained say he was born circa 1824 in Ireland and his parents were Henry TOOLE and Ann DOWLING...he migrated to Australia prior 1858 and died in Victoria in 1893.

It's possible he arrived on the Anna Maria at  Portland Victoria in Feb 1856 ex London along with Emily Toole (18 years) and Elizabeth Toole (19 years), but I have no additional knowledge of any siblings at this stage...  the age stated on the Ship Manifest for William gives him a year of birth in 1831, not the 1824 which his Death and Marriage details show - so that may not be him..

His Death and Marriage Certificates don't shed any additional information on his origins prior to him migrating and am yet to research the two girls mentioned so was hoping someone could  help me track him down through any Census or Parish details in Ireland or equally point me in the direction where I can make a start on possible County or area they may have come from etc .

Would appreciate any help or suggestions please...........Tom
