Having researched my adoptive family I have now started to look into my biological family.I was born A Alcroft in 1951,my mother was an Alice Alcroft. The Alcroft family were connected to Birkenhead ,Paisley,Ayr and Prestwick. As a 71 yr old this research is mainly for my children,if they are ever interested, but i am curious as to where I come from.

The Lighter Side / nature nurture
« on: Friday 05 February 16 12:33 GMT (UK)  »
I was chatting to a friend in the pub about family history,he is interested in the hobby too, when I mentioned that the family I was researching is not my biological family,I was adopted as a baby.He was puzzled as to why I was interested in my adoptive parents families but I don`t feel he was convinced by my reasons that your genes only determine physical attributes whereas nurture creates the person you become. So discovering my adopted family history reveals some of the views and life events that have helped to form the attitudes  and views I have grown up with. What do other RC`rs think about this.

The Common Room / There`s a story here somewhere?
« on: Sunday 30 August 15 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Having researched my fathers direct parental line I decided to look at the extended family, can`t help it can we!My dads 2x great uncle was a successful builder/master mason in Kirriemuir,a James Watson.Researching him I was able to find his will on the Scotlandspeople site.He had a number of children, and a bequest to his daughter Agnes revealed a mystery.Agnes was married to an Enos Andrew and lived in Stayley,Cheshire.Originally her father left instructions for her to receive £100,but he revoked this 2 years later. She then would receive £50 paid at 10 shillings weekly providing she did not live in Scotland again. The will was changed the year following Agnes`s husband`s death.Maybe her father thought she would return to live with him in Scotland,to look after him as he was almost 92.Perhaps she refused to return.I`ll probably never get to the bottom of this but it all adds to the family history. ???

I`ve started researching my wife`s family. They were Lummiss living in Laxfield and Hoxne.I`ve got the family in suffolk from 18th to late 19th centuries then  they seem to travel to other parts of the country. Was there any particular reason for migration from Suffolk at that time?

The Common Room / Another brick in the wall
« on: Friday 04 October 13 21:20 BST (UK)  »
Oh the joy of chasing down that link.Is it great grandad or his brother, maybe his sister. The enigma that is family history. We go hurtling down that road when BANG brick wall in the face. Are we downhearted, well yes,but worry not help is never far away. That`s why we are here at rootschat, everyone hits that wall, more than once, but the pleasure of the breakthrough ,often with help from other flattened faces makes it all worthwhile.Family history is important, somebody has to record it.Why not you!The family might think your a bit obsessed but one day they may thank you.It is fun though!
