Lanarkshire / Will versus inventory
« on: Saturday 03 September 16 04:42 BST (UK)  »
I went through an interesting will for a relative. The will was in Lanarkshire from 1877. He named many beneficiaries - some relatives and some charities with a total amount of about 7,000 pounds. A codicil in 1881 added one more relative and about 30 different charities for 2,800 pounds bringing the total to about 9,800 pounds.

He died in 1882 and the inventory of the estate was about 5,100 pounds. Does this mean the beneficiaries would receive a fraction of the will amounts (e.g. 5100/9800)? If I am understanding this correctly, it seems odd that in 1881 he would not see that his estate was worth far less than what he was allocating (unless there was a drastic change in his fortunes from 1881 to 1882)?

Am I missing something? Thank you.

Lanarkshire / Linbrae Farm Carmunnock - John Gilmour
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 02:44 BST (UK)  »
I see an OPR birth record from 1778 with the father John Gilmour of Carmunnock. He is "of Linbrae". The only reference I can find of Linbrae is here:

http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/historical-tax-rolls/land-tax-rolls-1645-1831/land-tax-rolls-lanarkshire-volume-04/28

It lists "John Gilmour   Ten penny Land of Linbrae". I looked at some detailed maps but could not find this location. I know the Gilmours lived on the Cathkin Estate at some point.

Thank you.

Lanarkshire / Muckethill versus Markethill, East Kilbride
« on: Monday 09 February 15 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
I downloaded some birth OPR records from East Kilbride for children of 3X great grandparents James Cumming and Agnes Craig. The three records from 1825 to 1829 say the location was "Muckethill". The book on the history of Rutherglen and East Kilbride has Muckethill in the list of place names. Separately it also has an entry for Markethill.

Looking on an old map, I see a Markethill farm or location perhaps half a mile north of the town of EK.

There is a fair bit written about the location Market Hill being used as a temporary market place due to a plague in Glasgow. There is very little about "Muckethill" out there though.

My question is, does anybody know if "Muckethill" is just an alias for "Markethill". If not then where was Muckethill?

My ancestors would have been tenant farmers I am guessing. The previously were on the Cathkin estate in Carmunnock parish.

Thank you.

Lanarkshire / Cumming in Carmunnock - Cathkin - East Kilbride area
« on: Saturday 20 September 14 17:03 BST (UK)  »
I have done a lot of research on the Cummings in this area and many trees go back as far as John Cumming (1716-1789) and Agnes Thomson. There are references to Heugh or Hew Cumming (hearth tax) in 1694 and mentioned as a church elder in Carmunnock in 1692.

I believe my ancestors were tenant farmers on the Cathkin farm owned by Humphrey then Walter Ewing McLae. They left for Canada about 1844.

A couple of main questions - I have spent a lot of time but have found no direct relationships to the other Cumming families in the area (e.g. Rutherglen, Cambuslang) or to any of the many ones in the various areas in Glasgow. Does anybody know if or how they are related or where they came from?

I can see early mentions of "Cwmyng" or "Cwmynge" in the East Kilbride area as far back as 1557.

I also wonder about my ancestors, as they did not show up in the 1841 census. My great great grandmother Agnes Cumming gave birth to an illegitimate child (my GGF) in 1840 or 1841. Would the entire family have hidden or wanted to avoid the census due to the scandal?

I am hoping that the Kirk session records will be made available online soon so I can possibly determine the name of the father. Anybody have an idea how soon before these records will be available? Thanks.

Terry
