East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Euphemia Henderson might be Elspeth?
« on: Tuesday 25 October 22 05:14 BST (UK)  »
On 29th May 1814 Euphemia Henderson married Hugh Grieg in Pencaitland.  Her father is said to be Andrew Henderson, a shoemaker in Salton.  Euphemia and Hugh show up in all the census records, and from these you can deduce she was born circa 1789, and her death certificate says she is 83 in 1871.

When I search for Euphemia's birth records I find Andrew Henderson a shoemaker in Salton, having children with May Torrance in the appropriate time frame, but there is no Euphemia among them.  The 1789 date is taken by Alexander, but in 1787 there is an Elspeth born.

My question is how likely is it that Elspeth is Euphemia? The names seem to be quite separate, but how many Andrew Henderson shoemakers is a town like Salton likely to have in the 1780s?

To make things worse, Euphemia's death certificate says her father is George Henderson an agricultural laborer, but I am assuming this is just wrong, and the marriage record will be the correct one.

I am perplexed as to fate of one of my family John Melrose. He was born in Manor, Peeblesshire, Scotland in 1827, son of James Melrose and Jane Ballantyne.  In 1852 he married Mary Middlemass, and you can see him in the 1861 Scottish census, described as a linen draper master, with children Agnes (7), James (5) and John (3). Later that year he had another daughter Jane Ballantyne Melrose.  That however is the last record I can find of him.

However Mary Middlemass is easy to track. In 1871 she is living on a farm with her grandparents, along with all 4 children. In 1881 she is living with her mother and daughter Jane in Peebles, where she is described as married, and living on private means. In 1891, she is living just with daughter Jane in Peebles, where again she is described as married and living on private means. In 1901 however, she is by herself in Peebles, and described as widowed and living on private means.

Next she moves to New Jersey, where she lives with her son James. You can see her in the 1910 federal census, living in Trenton Ward 13, Mercer, New Jersey, described as widowed. Also there are city directory entries around that time, where she is described as the widow of John Melrose. I have not found her death entry however.

Another small piece of evidence that John was alive at least in 1877, is that his daughter Agnes died in childbirth that year.  John is not described as deceased on Agnes's death record.

At the same time I have found an entry in the 1870 federal census for John Melrose a tailor from Scotland, living in New York Ward 09 District 14.  It is a curious entry, because living with him are an inferred set of children and an apprentice, but if you look at the children, none of them seem to be anything to do with his Scottish family, being born in New York. However if you look at how they are entered, the children also plausibly lack a family name - every other entry on the page has a line for the family name, and these have none. My research skills so far are not up to finding the origin of this "family", or the fate of any of them.  I am suspecting that the children are not Melroses, and somewhere there might be an 1860 census with them. I have not found any of them in subsequent records.

What do people make of this? Have I located my John, but if so what happens to him? Who are the people he is with?  I am hoping someone more skilled than me might point me in the right direction.

Caithness / Are these the same couple?
« on: Tuesday 02 August 22 10:42 BST (UK)  »
I was researching George Sinclair married to Christian Murray in Halkirk, and on familysearch I discovered them and their family, but combined with what seemed to me to be another family centered around George Sinclair and Christian Sinclair in Thurso.  My question is, are these two families the same?

From ScotlandsPeople I have the following information:

GEORGE SINCLAIR/CHRISTIAN SINCLAIR (no marriage record)
All children are baptized in Thurso parish.
  • William 31/08/1771 – in Brims
  • Margaret  13/02/1774 - in Brims
  • James   28/03/1777 – in Brims
  • Alexander  06/05/1785 – in Brims
  • Betty  09/02/1788 – in Brims
All the entries look perfectly normal, no mention of fornication, a changing cast of witnesses to the baptisms. Betty is said to be a posthumous child, daughter to Geo by Christian Sinclair, so presumably Christian Sinclair died in childbirth or subsequently.

GEORGE SINCLAIR/CHRISTIAN MURRAY - marriage 1778 in Halkirk (top of page is so dogeared, all you can judge is that theirs was the last marriage in 1778, as the next entry is in 1779. You can also make out that George was from Gerstone)
All children are baptized in Halkirk parish.
  • James 21/11/1779 – in Gerstone
  • George 02/06/1781 – in Lousery
  • Margaret 18/08/1782 – in Lousery
Again nothing remarkable about the entries, no witnesses repeated from before.
What would people make of this? There is a claim from descendants that I take seriously, that these families are the same, and we are simply dealing with a case of maiden name/married name being recorded.

Scotland / Missing names in baptism records
« on: Wednesday 27 July 22 03:06 BST (UK)  »
A simple question, as I have come across it twice recently - I find a baptism entry, neatly laid out with parents names and location, but the child's name and gender are missing.  Is this simply a case of the child having died, before being baptized? Or the clergyman forgot to fill it in?

An example is the attached picture for Unnamed Campbell, baptized(?) on 25 July 1746 in Watten, parents William Campbell and Christian Budge (OPR births 042/10/163 Watten).  Family trees keep claiming that there is a Janet Campbell born to these parents, but I can see no evidence of this, unless this unnamed child is her.

Australia / Frederick William (Frank) Poore - advice on where to look
« on: Saturday 14 May 22 03:36 BST (UK)  »
Frederick William (Frank) Poore, born Christchurch, NZ in 1882, was my great grandfather. Sometime around 1911 he left Christchurch, New Zealand for Australia, supposedly on the run from the law (I can't find any arrest warrant however), leaving behind my great grandmother and 2 children.  He was never to be heard of again, and searches by the family at the time, and me on the internet since, can find no trace of him.

However the other day, I have a new close DNA match with an unknown relative (probably a 2nd cousin), who is obviously a Poore descendent by the shared matches.  He has no idea of his grandmother Marjorie Dollie Barton's genesis, with family history saying she was born circa 1915, with father "Smith" and mother Mollie Kennedy.  I have since purchased Marjorie's marriage certificate, and it tells me that she married Vincent Lawrence in 1936, she was born in Kempsey, New South Wales, and her parents are Harry Barton and Mollie Duffy. I can also see her in the electoral roll in 1934, living in Korumburra, Victoria, with Frederick and Nellie May Barton.

My question is how can I proceed with this information?  I am having no luck with birth certificates for Marjorie Dollie, I can't find anything to do with Harry Barton, "Smith" and Mollie Duffy/Kennedy, and I am generally lost for ideas.  There is also a brother for Marjorie who goes under the name of Ted Smith, and I can find even less about him. I am convinced that "Smith" is Frederick William Poore, for a number of reasons, but how to find out any more about him from all of this, eludes me right now.

Lancashire / Winifred Humphrey Smith's maiden name
« on: Tuesday 18 January 22 08:56 GMT (UK)  »
I am at a loss now on how to proceed to locate the maiden name of Winifred Humphrey Smith. I can clearly find her on the 1939 Register - she is with her husband Richard Humphrey Smith at 77 Carr Lane, Chorley, Lancashire.  She gives her birth date as 9 January 1910.  Annotated in green is the later name of Aspinall with a date of 1968, which I assume is her later married name.

Richard died in 1957 at the same address, and is seemingly buried in North Berwick, Scotland (although this may just be a family memorial).  I think I have Winifred Smith marrying Edward Archer Aspinall in 1967 in Bolton, Lancashire, which would fit in with the green annotation of 1968 on the register.  I can then find a Winifred Aspinall dying in 2007, with a birth date given of 9 January 1911. Edward Aspinall had died in 1976, but at that stage her son Peter Humphrey Smith should have been alive (he died in 2012), but unluckily I can find no probate record, that might have linked this Winifred Aspinall with him.

Other family trees have the Winifred Smith that married Edward Aspinall as living from 6 April 1915 to 1998, but I think they are all copying off each other, and from a Winifred Aspinall who also died in Bolton, but in 1998 - they have just jumped to the conclusion that this Winifred Aspinall is the right one. I might be wrong however!

I can find no marriage records that would fit a Richard Smith marrying a Winifred in the proper time frame.  I know they are married before 1934 (they are living together in Doncaster, Yorkshire according to the Electoral Register), and because of her age I assume after about 1928.  The only record that checks out is a Richard H Smith marring a Winfred Jones in Oswestry, Shropshire, but this is not them.

Finally my question - what is Winifred's maiden name?  Where else might I go to research this?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Just one word in this record!
« on: Tuesday 31 August 21 15:11 BST (UK)  »
This is the service record of George Frederick Poore, born circa 1838, who joined the Royal Navy on the 13 January 1856 for a period of 10 years.  I can see on this record he is changing ships a lot, but the record stops in 1863, with some reason given for discharge.  Can anyone decipher what the reason might be? This is a page from the Royal Naval Seamen Index, 1853 -1872 on ancestry.com. This also seems to be the last record of George - after this I can find him nowhere, including in the British death records for 1863. His family emigrated to New Zealand in 1864, but nothing in NZ records either.

Kent / Elizabeth Browning - who is she?
« on: Monday 28 June 21 08:50 BST (UK)  »
My ancestors are William Thornhill and Elizabeth Browning, who married in West Malling on 11 August 1755. In the marriage record it says that Elizabeth is a widow.  At this time is it usual for a person to be remarried with their married name or maiden name? In short who is Elizabeth likely to be originally, and who was she married to before?

Trees on ancestry are all giving what is probably wrong, that Elizabeth was born in 1737 in Stourmouth, daughter of Thomas Browning and Jane May, but I am thinking this is unlikely for an 18 year old to already be a widow, but possible I suppose.

England / Alice Kate Smith/Herron/Hayes/Hill
« on: Friday 09 April 21 09:41 BST (UK)  »
I am getting a little lost tracking my relative Alice Kate Smith.  She is born in Dunedin, New Zealand on 17 December 1885, daughter of Robert Fergus Smith and Alice Maria Poole.  Sometime around 1886 the family must have moved to London, as her later siblings are born there.

In 1907 she marries Kenneth Chester Herron, having 3 children (Kenneth Vernon Chester 1908, Eleanor Christina 1909 and Margaret Alice Leslie 1913), but sadly her husband is killed in action in 1918, while flying as an observer in the RAF.  After this the trail gets harder to follow.

In 1924 she marries Reginald Hewlett Hayes in Kensington, but by 1927 she has remarried to Francis J Hill in Gloucester.  There must be a divorce in the middle of these 2 marriages, as Reginald Hayes (who seems to be quite a big name in London medicine) died in 1951.  Beyond the marriage record, I can find no trace that Alice ever lived with Reginald Hayes. Alice remains Alice Hill up to her death in Portugal on 21 May 1964. However at least one ancestry family tree says she has a daughter Jennifer with Francis Hill, I will guess before 1930, as Jennifer is marrying Geoffrey Robinson by 1948.

My questions are
1. What happened to Alice's 2nd marriage to Reginald Hewlett Hayes? Is there any way to find divorce records?
2.  Who is Francis J Hill? Alice is certainly not marrying down, as her address in 1933 when her daughter Eleanor marries is 27 Phillimore Gardens in Kensington, and the Google street view reveals a place that I would certainly like to live in...

My ancestry page for Alice is https://www.ancestry.com.au/family-tree/person/tree/102124726/person/240089057956/facts where I have assembled all I can find so far.
