Family History Beginners Board / Birth details of Robert Jones 1837 ??
« on: Thursday 19 July 18 12:55 BST (UK)  »
Trying to sight the Birth Certificate details of

Robert Jones 1837 +/- 1y.

Census suggest birth in Monmouthshire, Wales and 1891/1881 census age stated have led to 1837.

Searching Family Search / FreeCen and Monmouthshire locally transcribed records brings up nothing.

Wedding Certificate (seen actual) 1859 (3rd Apr) to Eliza Cornish Milton shows Roberts father as Thomas (Dec'd) and Robert 22yr Batchelor Engineer. Wedding was in Trevethin, Monmouthshire.

Need to find Robert to continue search to Thomas so grateful for any direction/help with either.

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Duffy Family - Help needed to move onwards.
« on: Monday 16 July 18 13:09 BST (UK)  »
Most of my branches are developing well and have born interesting fruit.

However, my father's bloodline remains elusive to progress (well - for me at the moment). I have had a previous post to help my ggf John 1857 ' brickwall ' and the advice from those helping was to obtain his first marriage certificate, which I was able to do ( I copied it to my original post). That gave his father's name - Edward but armed with this, I have still been unable to 'leap forward'.

Another thought was to develop John's children with a view that that may be easier and release some new information from another angle. But his children's records also seem very elusive (to me).

I currently have these details for the family:

Edward (father of John from the Marriage Certificate of John and Mary Hawthorn 1882 Salford)

John (previous post will show there are 2 possibilities for birth ?) 1857. I know he was born Lloughlyn, County Roscommon, Ireland from Census info.

First Marriage 1882 Mary Hawthorn(e) - Confirmed with actual marriage cert ordered/rec'd

Children:

Edward 1883 - Marriage possibilities two - Rose Ann Dodd 1903 (8d 181), Marguerite Simpson 1907 (8d 219) ?

James   1885 - Marriage possibly to Mary Agnes Derbyshire but I believe she was born in Germany and I can find no further information as to whether Derbyshire is Maiden or previous marriage name or Wedding citation to James.
John     1887 - Little found
Charles 1889 - Little found
William Henry 1891 - Little found

& Joseph 1893 (my grandfather)

I have been able to confirm all the above on GRO with Hawthorn as MMN.

1891 Census shows them all (apart from Joseph) BUT transcribed as Hawthorn(e) as surname NOT Duffy.

I have trawled through the transcribed Ordsall (I believe they resided), Salford Parish Church records to confirm Baptisms but all notes on these just give John & Mary as parents. http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Salford/

I am not coming from this from a specific person point of view. Could anyone find a bit more information or citation/record proof for any of these ancestors ? One piece may unlock my ability to shuffle forward with the others in family or indeed 'unlock' the Duffy Family Ireland to Salford era brickwall.

I utilise Family Search which does not yield anything for my searches on these individuals. I also use FreeBMD and GRO. I am not on Ancestry or similar due to cost.

Always amazed and grateful at what is found by the members :)

Thank you

The Common Room / How best to Record Surname Spellings
« on: Monday 02 July 18 09:12 BST (UK)  »
Interested in views, which may be individual and diverse, but wondering if there is an 'etiquette'.

In earlier ancestry searches it appears that forenames (sometimes) and surnames (many times) are spelt slightly differently in records.

An example for my line is Mayberry - Maybery/Maybury/Maiberry/Maibery.

As I am recording a Family Tree I have found myself taking 'one spelling' and keeping it consistent in the tree. So my first location of the above surname was Mayberry so I have altered all linked spellings (to my tree) to read Mayberry. The attached citations show the spellings as given but I just like order :)

It doesn't affect 'world order' but is there an etiquette amongst historians of family trees that I breach?

Family History Beginners Board / Mayberry/Jones Wedding - 2nd Opinions Pls

Family line: Mayberry, Chapel Hill, Monmouthshire, Wales

Esther Mayberry 1782 - 1824 >>>

Edward Mayberry 1758 (Father) married Mary Jones (mother).

I am seeking clarity on records regarding Edward / Mary. FamilySearch arrives with little and again I am not able to use premium sites.

Searching I have located a marriage citation for Mary Jones to an Edward Jones 5th Sept 1782 in Monmouthshire, Wales which would fit my thoughts on the marriage.

Esther was born 1782 (although being Sept Mary would have been pregnant if this was the marriage for my family - that doesn;t fit with the 'usual remit' of marriage the year before child).

I cannot find records online to read an entry and confirm if it may have been transcribed incorrectly ie Edward Jones instead of Edward Mayberry.

A bit of a brickwall which needs a fresh pair of eyes cause i'm spinning :)

Would be grateful for anothers investigatory skills or ability to sight entry through another source not available to me.

To clarify : Esther's details are good / Edward as father is confirmed, the rest is investigation findings at the moment.

Thanks

I'm 'going in circles' with this one at the moment and would like 'fresh thoughts / confirming thoughts'.

Known Facts

John Duffy 1861 (Ireland) married Mary Hawthorn(e) in Salford, Lancashire - 5 children including my Grandfather Joseph b.1893 Salford Lancashire.

Mary 'disappears' (can't locate death details) and second wife 'Elizabeth'. A month or so ago I had Rootschat help with Elizabeth b America and am happy with this part of John's history.

GRO shows 5 children with MMn confirmed eg

Grandad -

DUFFY, JOSEPH
HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1893  J Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 08D  Page 134

Mary & John Duffy Marriage shows 1882 Salford St Batholomews (Volume 8D Page 147)

Mary Hawthorn - fitting with fathers name (Robert) located shows born 1872.

Mary & John first child located - James Duffy b 1885

Everything tells me that Mary could not have been 10years at marriage and 13 with first child BUT I cannot find a 'different' Mary.

To me it looks like I have the wrong Mary and Hawthorn(e) line but Salford Lancashire and family memories that the Hawthorn's were Occupation in Dyers all fits with Robert Hawthorn who had a Mary which fits. (but the age doesn't sit well).

If anyone has better records or sources could any light be shed.?

Appreciate it may be obvious but regular visits don't change the root i'm on.

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Eliza Elizabeth DOWN
« on: Monday 16 April 18 18:55 BST (UK)  »
Died 1921 aged '52'
GRO Poplar 1c 777

Birth therefore should be either 1868 or 1869 if death aged is to be believed.

Trying to locate Birth Cert with 'Birth date / Christening Date' and 'Parents details'.

I imagine with parents names a search of Family Search would highlight the right register but just searching Eliza Down, brings up little I can confirm.

I believe it maybe on Ancestry as a search shows:

London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1917
Birth, Baptism & Christening
.
Record information.
Name
Eliza Elizabeth Down

but no birth year noted. Possible 'image' seems to indicate a record or 'page image' of the actual Parish Register but I cannot progress further atm to view.

Is anyone able to transcript or attach image of the document for me.?

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Wedding - Edwin J Powell & Louisa Dunn 1893
« on: Sunday 15 April 18 19:17 BST (UK)  »
Searching for Wedding Certificate / or Citation for above.

Edwins first wife and less is known from remaining family, as she died young. b.Louisa Dunn 1872 +/- 1yr Hackney, London   (Edwin J Powell b 1866 Islington)

I have located on FreeBMD Wedding (by searching names and year):

Marriages Dec 1893   (>99%)

Powell
Edwin James

Hackney
1b
966

However, through Family Search I cannot find Wedding Citation through searching with Louisa Dunn as principal - and only return one Edwin J Powell Wedding in Hackney in 1893 when I search with Edwin.

The details show Edwin J Powell, Hackney, 1B  956 (which doesn't correspond to FreeBMD)  and others Charles Joseph McKrell & Alexander Seaborn. (No mention of Louisa)

Can anyone check if one of the Volumes Pages is more right than other OR help me locate the Citation for this wedding.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Dutton Wedding Certificate 1816
« on: Monday 09 April 18 13:08 BST (UK)  »
Marriage Certificate

Job Dutton
Sophia

17 March 1816
Holy Trinity Clapham
Lambeth London

Questions:

(1) This photocopy of Wedding Certificate suggests brides Maiden Name to be DUTTON same as grooms last name. Is this likely or would experience tell you this is wrong ? Can anybody help search brides maiden name for clarification.

(2) In the presence of ............?

Top line > I can read 'Dutton' as surname - any more help?
Second line >   ?  Arnold    Anna Maria (?) Dutton ??
Third Line > ? Dutton

Ideally I am looking for parents details from this certificate to progress line.

I have that Job and Sophia had 9 children the eldest I have as Anna Maria 1817 which leads me to read same on possible witness ie naming child same as parent.

Any thoughts, links or suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1869 Wedding Cert - Brides Maiden Name
« on: Tuesday 03 April 18 17:21 BST (UK)  »
Two sibling ancesters Garner married two sisters from down the road.

I printed out the Marriage certificates and am having trouble with the brides maiden name.

Family Search explanations to attach citation give it a stab at Quorn & Quarn.

Not overly convinced as:

Unusual surname IMO for the era.
I believe the surname may start with 'L'  (although in the case of Mary Ann - it does look like a second letter of 'U' which would follow 'Q' ).

Be good to have any views on the 'vicars creativity with the ink' flourishing !!

Thanks
