I am struggling to find the baptism for my GGG grandfather, William Morris.

I have only a few facts:

He married Sarah Crayford at Elham Kent in 1836 - so no father's name.

His children's baptisms suggest the family were living in Reculver from 1840, (1841 census for this parish missing) and wife Sarah buried there 1846.

In the 1851 census, William is still in Reculver, widower, age 39, birthplace 'Milton, Kent'. I've tried Milton, Sittingbourne and Milton, Gravesend + surrounding parishes but can't find any William Morris'  baptised 1809-1815,  nor even any likely families.

So I just wondered how much reliance I should put on the Milton connection, without the corroboration of subsequent census records?

Perhaps I should add that I can't confirm a death either, although by 1861, the family are dispersed, the eldest married (doesn't say father deceased on certificate) and the youngest are at sea, one went as a cabin boy in 1859, age 13.

How accurate have you found birthplace info in your experience?

Grateful for any insights

Family History Beginners Board / Help with Mary Foord/Ford of Sussex/Kent please
« on: Friday 25 August 23 16:34 BST (UK)  »
I would very much appreciate any advice on finding the baptism of my 4xGgrandmother Mary Foord who married Henry Hadaway at Nonington, Kent on 12.10.1807, witness was Jemima Foord. Census records suggest she was born around 1786, and gives her birthplace as 'Sussex, N.K.'

I'm looking at all Mary Foord/Fords born around that time in Sussex and trying to eliminate by marriage or death but wondered if, in your experience any of the following information is significant?

1. Also married at Nonington was Abraham Foord to Sarah Baxter on 23.11.1800, witness Ann Foord. Census returns suggest Abraham was born around 1780 and gives his birthplace as 'Sussex, Newick'. I can't find a baptism for Abraham, possible parents were Abraham and Martha Ford who were married at Newick in 1776, twins Henry & James were baptised there in 1778.  Both Abraham and Martha were buried at Eythorne Baptist Church (3 miles from Nonington) in 1838 & 1821 respectively.

2. Mary called her youngest daughters, Jemima and Martha

3. Mary's son, Thomas Hadaway, was apprenticed to Abraham Foord (1841 census) at Eastry (4 miles from Nonington) and in 1847 married his daughter Mary Foord at the Wesleyan Chapel, Dover.

So lots of connections but I'm not sure of their importance?

I've also been wondering about the significance of:
a) marriage witnesses - were they usually siblings
b) Baptist faith - are names chosen at birth or later at baptism?

Various FTs on Ancestry suggest Mary, Jemima, Abraham & Ann were all the children of Abraham and Martha of Newick which would be great but sadly no evidence!

Any advice or encouragement very welcome!

Please could someone with access to the Sonning marriages check out the details for a marriage of William NEVILLE on 25.7.1756? The transcription I found (FindMyPast) gives the bride's name as Anne REVENEN but wondered if there were any more details available to help me track her down.

Sonning parish records are not among those Oxfordshire images available on Ancestry, so I can't look at the original, although I see OFHS has a CD of Sonning records. Is this because Sonning is now Berkshire and their parish records were transferred there and are only available to view at the Records Office Reading? Not sure if I've understood this correctly.

Ideally I would like to find  a baptism for Anne REVENEN! But I can't find anyone with that surname anywhere! However,   there are RAVENINGS in Bray, Berks and at various places (Pyrton, Crowell, Adwell) in Oxfordshire and Stone & Dinton in Buck so that's why I wondered about the marriage transcription accuracy.

Sussex / James Shepherd, (father of Charles 1809-1875)
« on: Friday 18 March 22 11:52 GMT (UK)  »
My GGGrandfather Charles SHEPHERD was baptised at Walberton in 1812 (born 7th June 1809) married Mary Ann ROOK and lived in Washington but I am really struggling to find out much about his parents James and Sarah and wondered if anyone else had come across this couple or had any suggestion/help?
What I know:
1. James and Sarah had 5 children baptised at Walberton, John 1812, Sarah 1814, Ann 1817 and Mary 1819
2. In 1841 James is '50, farmer' was at Barnham with daughter Mary and her (Illeg) daughter Mary Jane who was baptised at Up Waltham 1840
3. James SHEPHERD, farmer, is named as Mary's father on the register of  her marriage at Walberton to William BLACKMAN in 1845

I can't find a suitable marriage for James and Sarah on the SFHG marriage index or FS/FindMyPast/Ancestry
Strangely (?) there are no FTs on Ancestry claiming any further info on James - which I always like to compare with my research, even when I'm sure I'm right!
I have tried:
1. To follow up on the James SHEPHERDS born around the right time in Susssex - there are at least 8, trying to exclude using census and marriage and possibly the name order of his children
2. I'm currently looking at the FTs of other SHEPHERDs in the area (there are several, even another James and Sarah SHEPHERD living Up Waltham in 1841) and searching for any links
3. Also looking at the COLLINS families (lots of those too) as Mary added COLLINS to her name at her marriage
At this point would you look outside Sussex/accept the info isn't there/give up for bit?
Any help/advice/sympathy welcome!

Sussex / Looking for James Shepherd in 1851 census - Barnham page missing?
« on: Sunday 30 January 22 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
James Shepherd was living in Barnham, Sussex in 1841 but after that date I can find no more info.

I thought I would check the all the individuals on the 1851 census for Barnham in case he was there but not transcribed due to misspelling etc but some of the schedule seems to be missing.
It seems to start at household 10 (William Tipper). The first line on the page has 'William ditto(for surname) son 7 mo', though the transcription (this is on Ancestry by the way) shows surname as Boiling but not shown on film. Seems to me there must be a previous page that someone was able to transcribe.

Can someone point me to where the film of households 1-9 might be available ?

I've hit a brick wall with James SHEPHERD and I'm not especially hopeful of finding him still in Barnham in 1851 but at least I could exclude - which would be progress of a sort!

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / John Rook of Froxfield and possibly son Thomas
« on: Sunday 02 January 22 17:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone could look up the Baptism Index for  Thomas ROOK 1747 and the Marriage Index for John ROOK 1723 as the transcriptions I have found on Family Search are a bit confusing.

On Family Search I have found the marriage of Jno ROOKE at Froxfield on 23rd April 1723 but the bride's name is given as Argent UPSDEAL on 1 entry, the 2nd entry  shows the name as ***Ent UPSDEAL. What could this first name be?

I am also interested in Thomas RROOK but again from Family Search the transcription is confusing:
One result shows Thomas KOOK was baptised at Empshott on 16th June 1747 son of John and Elizabeth KOOK but a second result shows a Thomas ROOK baptised at Ewshott also 16th June 1747, son of John and Elizabeth! Empshott is quite close to Froxfield but Ewshott is I think in Surrey?

I was intending to  invest in  the Baptism and Marriage Indexes from HGS but will they be more accurate than FS or do I need  to go to Winchester and view the original parish register entries?

Many thanks

Would some kind soul with access to the West Sussex Catholic Register have a look for the baptism of anyone with the surname Bateup around 1720 please?
I am specifically looking for the  baptisms of Edward and  Frances Bateup - alternative  spellings include Baytop/Batup/Baitup.
Both Bateups married in West Grinstead, Edward in 1744 and Frances in 1747.
Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Edward and Frances Bateup
« on: Saturday 06 November 21 12:46 GMT (UK)  »
I have both Edward and Frances Bateup in my family tree.
Edward Bateup married Jane Cobby 21.5.1744 at West Grinstead and Frances Bateup married Thomas Feist 28.12.1747 also at West Grinstead.
I have tried various spellings (Batup, Baytop, Batchup, Baittup) but have been unable to find a baptism for either and wondered if anyone had come across this family?

I found baptism for Jane Cobby (Parham) and Thomas Fist (Cowfold) but the Bateups are eluding me.

Edward & Jane's children were baptised at West Grinstead but Frances and Thomas Feist's children were baptised at West Firle.

Not sure if this is relevant but there were 2 other Bateup marriages at W Grinstead; Elizabeth married Edmund Cobby (brother of Jane) in 1747 and Mary married Thomas Lepherd in 1751

On Ancestry I have found another FT which suggests Edward Batchup is the son of Thomas Baytop (born 1690 at Wadhurst) and wife Catherine but no facts attached though 'my' Edward Bateup named his eldest daughter Katherine and Mary & Thomas Lepherd also had a daughter Katherine which seems to tie in.
Any help or hints much appreciated

My GGGG grandfather John Puttock married Elizabeth Greenfield at Billingshurst on 31st Oct 1769, witnesses were William Puttock and Thomas G (Greenfield?).
I can't identify a baptism for John Puttock and would appreciate some help.
I found a number of possibilities on SFHG, none in Billlingshurst but from nearby parishes, my best suggestion at the moment is 15th Jan 1739 at Rudgwick 'John son of John Puttock from Cranleigh', based on distance and correct spelling.
John and Elizabeth children were Richard, Rhoda, Zephaniah, David, James, Mary, Sarah and Hestor and I hoped this would help identify the right branch of the Puttock family as they are quite unusual?
I have read other posts on here about the Puttock/Greenfields of Billingshurst and realise their complicated family trees but wondered if anyone has come across 'my' John Puttock?
Many thanks
