Hi,

I was wondering if someone could have a look at the following and see if you agree with me in regards to what medals my Uncle who was killed on HMS Voltaire in April 1941 should be entitled to.

He served on HMS Southampton (escorting the King & Queen on visit to Canada) Then on HMS Voltaire as a convoy escort ship in the Atlantic mainly between Bermuda - Halifax NS - UK then in 1941 South Atlantic Station until she was sunk off the Cape Verde Islands

I have 2 medals for him - The War Medal & The Defence Medal.

I believe there are 2 missing plus a memorial scroll which was issued to service personnel KIA.  The ones I believe are missing are as follows:

1939-45 Star
This star was awarded for service in the Second World War between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.

The recipient was awarded this star if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service. Also the award of a gallantry medal or MID also produced the award of this medal, regardless of their service duration.

Royal Navy personnel had to complete 6 months service afloat in active operational areas.

Atlantic Star
This star was awarded to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic within the period 3 September 1939 to 8 May 1945.
The recipient was awarded this star if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service. Also the award of a gallantry medal or MID also produced the award of this medal, regardless of their service duration.

Royal Navy and Merchant Navy personnel, together with Army and RAF personnel serving with either Naval service, had to complete 6 months service in the Atlantic, home waters, North Russia Convoys or South Atlantic waters west of longitude 20 degrees East.

Memorial Scroll
The next-of-kin of deceased service personnel received a memorial scroll. At the top of the scroll was the emblem of King George VI, followed by this text:

"This scroll commemorates <service person's name & unit> held in honour as one who served King and Country in the world war of 1939-1945 and gave his life to save mankind from tyranny. May his sacrifice help to bring the peace and freedom for which he died."

The details of the deceased service person are shown in red ink, while the rest of the inscription is in black.

Now these all could have been issued and over the years have been missplaced or other family members have them I do not know.  What I would like to know is if I am correct in my assumption that the above is what he should be entitled to so I came persue it further with the medal office, well at least write to them to see what they reply with.

Any help, comments and input is greatly appreciated.
