Huntingdonshire / St Ives, Huntingdon - Parish Register - Look up request
« on: Thursday 10 August 23 12:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am hoping SKS may have access to the parish registers for St Ives, Huntingdon, and be able to look up the baptisms for me.

I am looking for children born to Edmund & Anne Overall at St Ives.

Edmund Overall was buried at St Ives on 13 Dec 1736, and in his will (written 14 Nov 1736, proved Archdeaconry Court Huntingdon 14 May 1737) he states that his wife's name was Ann.

A child, named Ann (daughter of the widow Ann Overal) was buried at St Ives on 21 Oct 1737.

No children are mentioned in the will, though Ann could have been born after Edmund died. It is also possible that he had children, but just did not mention them in his will.

I was hoping someone may be able to check the baptisms for Ann Overall c1737, and/or any other children to this couple. I have not yet located Edmund & Ann's marriage either.

I believe that Edmund Overall was the eldest son of Henry Overall & Carrina Swaine of Ramsey, Hunts. There is a marriage for an Edmund Overall to Ann Bulkley in Hampshire in 1711, but this is for his uncle Edmund. Edmund Overall of St Ives, I believe, was born around 1710-12, most likely in Ramsey.

Any help would be appreciated  ;)

Europe / Civil registration births - Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, France
« on: Wednesday 17 March 21 11:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I have not done any French research before, but I am trying to locate the birth record for George Robert Curry Nicoll reportedly born in Marseille, France in December 1878.

His parents were George Nicoll (Mariner) and Theresa Davidge. George was Scottish and Theresa was English. They married in Marseille (from the GRO Consular Marriages index), but I am yet to order the certificate. George senior died at sea in 1885, and Theresa and little George lived in Scotland. I have all of young George's records in Scotland from the 1881 census to his death in 1926, but would really love to pin down his birth in France.

I have discovered the French Archives Online, and have located what I believe to be his birth in the Marseille Table décennale for Naissance (births) 1873-1882. Snip attached. I believe it states that he was born on 16 Dec 1878.

http://www.archives13.fr/archive/resultats/etatcivil/n:64?Rech_commune=Marseille&type=etatcivil

I am not sure where to go from here....I cannot for the life of me see his actual birth record in the other books on this site for December 1878 (Acte, Registre de reconnaissances & Registre de transcriptions)....but I cannot read French, and have just scanned as best I could for names. Would his birth be recorded differently as he was a British National?

I figured that if he shows in the index though, that his record is in there somewhere..... :-\

Would love it if someone else could take a look or maybe point me in the right direction  ;)

Thanks so much

Europe / Regensburg, Bavaria - Catholic Records
« on: Sunday 07 June 20 05:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have been working on my German family, the vast majority of whom are from Hessen and are members of the Evangelical Church. I have just come across my first Catholic from Bavaria, and while am familiar with where to find Evangelical Church records, I am much less familiar with where and how to locate Catholic records. I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction?

The information that I have thus far on my ancestor Barbara, relates to her second marriage. A fellow researcher has located her marriage record on Archion.net, which has been translated below:

At Regensburg Gesamtgemeinde (Evang. Church) on 3 July 1794 Johann Christian Sommerlad married Barbara, the widow of Johann Zingel, Hofmahler and Vergolder (court painter & gilder) of Thurn and Taxis.

The record does not give Barbara's maiden name, age or birthplace...but does specify that she was of the Catholic religion. It does not state if her first husband was also Catholic.

The marriage record gives loads of detail about Johann Christian Sommerlad (below), which fits with the extensive research I have done on his family in Hessen, so no issues there ;)

Translation:
Groom: the honorable Johann Christian Sommerlad , servant here, at the highly esteemed royal Danish ducal Holstein- Glückstadt comitial evoy Baron von Diede zum Fürstenstein, excellency, legitimate son of the honorable Konrad Sommerlad, schoolmaster in Langenhain, Ziegenberg, Baron von Diede's domination in the Hesse-Darmstadt office Butzbach, legitimate son and M. Anna Margarethe nee Müller from Langenhain.

Barbara and Johann Christian Sommerlad had 3 children in Regensburg, and I have copies of each of the baptism records from Archion.net as well as entries in the magazine/newspaper 'Regensburgisches Diarium oder wöchentliche Frag- und Anzeige-Nachrichten' that relate to the marriage, baptisms and burial of their second child.

Karl Christian Daniel Sommerlad - baptised 14 Dec 1794 at Regensburg Gesamtgemeinde (Evang. Church)
Johann Peter Sommerlad - baptised 4 Dec 1797 at Regensburg Gesamtgemeinde (Evang. Church), buried 31 March 1798 Regensburg Gesamtgemeinde (Evang. Church)
Mariana Sophia Franziska Friederika Sommerlad - baptised 26 Dec 1799 Regensburg Gesamtgemeinde (Evang. Church)

In all of the baptisms, Barbara is simply referred to by her first name (no maiden name) and that she is of the Catholic religion.

The family left Regensburg for Langenhain, Hessen where Johann Christian Sommerlad was from and he died there in 1814. Barbara and her children Karl and Mariana then relocated to Ober-Rosbach, Hessen where the children married in 1818 & 1822, and Barbara died in 1835.

Both the children recorded their mother Barbara's maiden name as Fischer at their marriages in Ober-Rosbach.

I have the Familienbuch for Ober-Rosbach and this states that Barbara died on 10th April 1835. Her birth date is given in the book as c.1755, which I presume is from the age given at her death. I have not seen the actual Church record for the death/burial, but would love to one day to see what detail it gives. I presume that she was born or at least firstly married in Regensburg, Bavaria, but the Familienbuch does not give any other details.

In the absence of knowing where to look for Catholic records, I have had a bit of a look through the 'Regensburgisches Diarium oder wöchentliche Frag- und Anzeige-Nachrichten' to see if the death of Johann Zingel was mentioned, or Barbara's first marriage...but alas to date I have found no mention of either. There are several Fischer's and Zingel's mentioned in the newspaper/magazine, but I cannot yet find a link to my Barbara. Some of the Fischer's are Protestant, and those that are Catholic appear to attend either the cathedral and parish of St Ulrich, or the parish of St Ruprecht. The Zingel's mentioned in the magazine appear to be Protestant.

Any assistance with where I might look next for Barbara's first marriage or baptism would be greatly appreciated  ;)

Thanks so much!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Cigar manufacture Sheffield
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 10:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I am trying to find out where my great grandmother worked in her youth. She is listed in 1925 as a cigar maker, and at the time was living at 45 Walkley Road, Sheffield. She had previously lived in and around the Pitsmoor/Woodside area.

I can't seem to find any likely cigar or cigarette manufacturers where she may have worked  :-\

Any help would be greatly appreciated  ;)

Occupation Interests / Grants/Vouchers for university studies in UK post WWI
« on: Wednesday 06 February 19 08:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

Not sure where to post this query, hopefully 'occupation interests' makes some sense!

A relative of mine served during WWI in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) and on his return to Scotland in 1919 enrolled at St Andrews University to study Medicine. The lovely folk at the University of St Andrews Library have found his matriculation details and graduation records, and on them it states that a fair portion of his university fees were paid through grants and vouchers.

Most years a large proportion of his fees were paid in Ministry of Labour S.E.D. Vouchers rather than cash. And in his final year he was also in receipt of a D.O. Grant (written in the bursary/scholarship section of the form)

I am wondering if anyone can shed any light on what these grants were and how they were obtained? Were they for reserved returned servicemen? Were they based on academic merit?

Any info would be greatly appreciated  ;)

World War One / WWI - uniform identification/dating
« on: Friday 30 November 18 04:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I am trying to sort out my relative's military career, and I was hoping that someone may be able to help me identify the attached uniforms?

My relative John George 'Jack' Rutherford's service during WWI is complex and confusing. I have not been able to find his service record, but what I have been able to confirm with records is below:

Jack was born on 22 Sept 1899 in Dundee

Jack enlisted 20 Oct 1915 at Kirkaldy as a trooper with the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry (Regimental No: 2874) - he was discharged the same day, due to being just 16 yrs old (he claimed to be 19!!)

His medal card (attached) shows that he re-enlisted and served as below:
Highland Light Infantry       57501       Private
Royal Scots                       59165       Private
Army Ordnance Corps       049349       Private

I know that this is my Jack (there are a few John George Rutherford's!) as in the 1918-1919 absentee voter list for Dundee, he is listed at his mother's address with his brothers. That list shows that he was in the 3rd Royal Scots as a private, with the Regimental Number of 59165.

From family folklore I have been told the following:

His son recalled that "He went straight from school into the Army – the Highland Light Infantry. He fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 but was shot and gassed and was invalided out. He recovered and went back in 1918 and stayed in the Army after the war as there were no jobs available. He ended up in Ireland putting down the rebellion."

His nephew recalled that "During WWI, my dad had to go to Perth to get the 14 or 15 year old Jack out of the Black Watch Regiment where he had volunteered, lying about his age"

Now, from the records I can see that it was actually the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry that he joined as a young teenager, not the Black Watch, and was discharged due to being 16 years old. So this story may have been exaggerated over the years.

What I would love to know is whether he tried enlisting in the Black Watch earlier than his escapade to Kirkaldy to join the Fife and Forfarshire Yeomanry in 1915. When I was given the attached photo, I was told it was Jack in the Black Watch uniform in 1914......can anyone confirm if it is Black Watch or Fife and Forfar Yeomanry?

I know that the Battle of the Somme was fought between 1 July and 18 November 1916 and that there were several battalions of the Highland Light Infantry present during the battle. So I would love to know if he served with the HLI during this time, or whether this story is not quite correct? Jack would still have been under 17yrs at the start of the battle....do you think he would have been allowed to enlist at that age?

I am not sure which uniform he is wearing in the second photo, I presume it was taken between 1916-1918. Is it Highland Light Infantry? Or Royal Scots?

I am presuming that he was with the 3rd Royal Scots till the end of WWI, then moved to the Army Ordinance Corps for the Irish Rebellion....would this be a reasonable assumption?

Any help sorting out this riddle would be appreciated  ;)
