Yorkshire (West Riding) / 1841 census Harriet Auty
« on: Saturday 03 July 10 15:41 BST (UK)  »
Need help in finding Harriet Auty born  in 1829 christened in Adwick le Street in August 1829 her parents were Thomas and Sarah Auty.  Thomas born about 1810 and Sarah was 7 years younger . In 1847 the family were living in Hampole when their daughter Harriet married William Stanley at The Parish Church Adwick le Street. Census from 1861 has Thomas ( a labourer) and Sarah living  in Hampole.Any help with the Auty name would really be appreciated as I have drawn a complete blank and hit a really big brick wall.  Want to know if Harriet ( my gt. gt. grandmother ) had any brothers or sisters
Many thanks

Lancashire / Wigan Observer Newspapers for 1871
« on: Saturday 03 July 10 14:11 BST (UK)  »
This complete year of original newspapers is in a very old green library type folder - sadly some of the newspapers have been" attacked " by someone who was obviously interested in certain issues appearing, so some pages have sections cut out.  The births marriages and deaths seem to have survived as do most of the Court Sessions and local news like the pit disasters which lists all the names of the fatalities.  Have no idea what is best for these newspapers, could they or should they be restored  - they certainly make fascinating reading - I found the newspapers at a local antique fair and thought they should be saved but don't know how or if it is possible to restore them or really what to do with them.  I have a feeling they were possibly discarded by a library because of their condition.

Census and Resource Discussion / Confusing IGI
« on: Sunday 20 June 10 19:02 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone else ever come across errors on the IGI ??? When comparing copies of some Parish Records I have to the IGI there were quite a few discrepencies, in fact it did make me wonder which records were in fact correct - The Parish Records or the IGI - made me go back to the very beginning and re do a lot of the research just to make sure I was following the right family. Have to say that I am still in a bit of a dilemma over some of the information but without the help of any census researching in the 1700's relies heavily on both the above records - mind you I do live in hope that someone somewhere just might have an old family Bible with all the names neatly written down !!!

Shropshire / Cartway Bridgnorth 1901
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 14:42 GMT (UK)  »
Cartway Bridgnorth is the address given on the marriage certificate for Edith Baker Potter when she married David Pearson at St Leonard's Church Bridgenorth. Her father was John Baker Potter who was listed as a " mechanic ". I am having great trouble finding Edith and her family on the 1901 Census , she was born in Kidderminster 30th June 1880 and to date  I have failed to find Edith or her father and family on any census under any name be it Potter, Baker or Baker Potter.  The only hope I have is the 1901 census and the Cartway address on the marriage certificate.  Any help would really be appreciated,
Susan

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Albrighton, Shropshire
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 19:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello Shropshire readers from Lancashire - I wonder does anyone know if Albrighton has a Cemetery ?  Have looked on the internet but nothing has turned up.  This area is " foreign "  territory to me, so any help would certainly be appreciated as to where the people from Albrighton would have been buried .

Many thanks

Staffordshire / Factory address on Birth Certificate
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 15:50 BST (UK)  »
A birth Certificate for 1865 lists the place of birth and the mother's address as Factory, Tipton . Was this another name for the workhouse or was it an area of Tipton around that time. The father was a John Fitchett who was a Boatman.  Many thanks, Susan

Lancashire / St. Gregory's Church, Chorley
« on: Friday 04 April 08 17:22 BST (UK)  »
As my ancestors were married at Chorley St Lawrence  ( Church of England ) - I was quite amazed to discover this week that three members ( maybe more ) of the family were buried in the Churchyard of St Gregory's  Catholic Church, Weldbank Lane Euxton, Chorley. The lady I spoke to on the telephone, at the Church, did not think that there were records of the people buried in the Churchyard.  Has anyone done a Monumental Inscriptions Record for St Gregory's. The burial records give no clue as to grave number or section where they were buried and as it was a mother and  two of her daughters I would have thought they would have been buried together. As I do not live in the Chorley area I would be grateful for any help or advice. The date of burials was December 1841,June 1848 and April 1851.

Others could have been buried at St Gregory's  in December 1882 and April 1886. They were all members of the Crook family

Many thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Lancaster Directories 1910 -1931
« on: Sunday 03 February 08 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph Lowe, tin plate worker, left Wigan after 1901 census, is at 43 Gardner Road Skerton Lancaster in 1909.  Nothing else till his Will dated 1932 made at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary where he died. Address on Will 36 Gloucester Ave Lancaster.  Appears to have only been living at both of these addresses for less than two years according to Electoral Rolls.  Have hit a big brick 20 year wall !!!!
