1841 census Harriet Auty
« on: Saturday 03 July 10 15:41 BST (UK) »
Need help in finding Harriet Auty born  in 1829 christened in Adwick le Street in August 1829 her parents were Thomas and Sarah Auty.  Thomas born about 1810 and Sarah was 7 years younger . In 1847 the family were living in Hampole when their daughter Harriet married William Stanley at The Parish Church Adwick le Street. Census from 1861 has Thomas ( a labourer) and Sarah living  in Hampole.Any help with the Auty name would really be appreciated as I have drawn a complete blank and hit a really big brick wall.  Want to know if Harriet ( my gt. gt. grandmother ) had any brothers or sisters
Many thanks
Susan

Hi Susan

Sorry, I don't have access to any census sites, but the IGI has one or two possible siblings:

Bessy Awty chr 17th April 1831, daughter of Thomas Awty and Sarah (C039621) Adwick le Street,
George Auty chr17th Feb 1833, son of Thomas Auty and Sarah (C106761) Skelbrook chapelry of South Kirkby, and
Joseph Auty chr 6th September 1835 (C106761 as before).

I'm a bit confused about the info you give, Thomas being born around 1810 and Sarah 'seven years younger', i.e. born 1817. This would make Sarah (Shillito) only 11 on her marriage to Thomas in 1828.Could you please clarify? Perhaps, if you are going by Sarah's age in the 1861 census, he married twice, each time to a Sarah?

Sarah is older, not younger.
In 1851 their ages are given as 32 and 37.
In 1861 they are 53 and 61  :o  :o

Hello Lesley and Jennifer,

Very many thanks for finding that information re Harriet Auty's family.  Will have to plead a " senior moment " It was Harriet Auty who married William Stanley who was a minor when she married and was 7 years younger than her husband William, Harriet born 1829 married 1847 -  Harriet was Christened in the August of 1829 and married 28th December 1847 - 18 years old.

The 1861 census does show that her mother Sarah Auty nee Shillito was  seven years older than her husband Thomas Auty - think I have that right now.  Although in later census the years between Sarah and Thomas are much less than 7 years - in 1881 Sarah is 77 and Thomas 76.

Many thank for all your help
Susan
