The modify button seems to have disappeared at least in the Canada forum and subforum. Why? And will it be put back?

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry - Wildcard Rules Changed
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 01:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hallelujah! Ancestry has announced changes to the way wildcards can be used in searches.

Quote
Improved Wildcard flexibility has been one of the our most requested feature updates. So to start out 2010 on a happy note, we’ve updated our wildcard functionality.

Previously, you had to use three characters and then either a * or a ?. We’ve made a few changes:

  • Now you can put a wildcard first, such as *son or ?atthew to catch all of those crazy spellings and variations that our ancestors came up with.
  • Either the first or last character must be a non-wildcard character. For example, Han* and *son are okay, but not *anso*
  • Names must contain at least three non-wildcard characters. For example, Ha*n is okay, but not Ha*

These changes apply to both simple search and advanced search, and both old and new search.

These changes are exactly what I'd been hoping would happen at Ancestry.

Midlothian / James Bell and Marion Campbell
« on: Tuesday 17 November 09 01:22 GMT (UK)  »
I’m trying to find information regarding the parents and siblings of James Bell and Marion Campbell as well as information regarding some of their descendants. I have quite a bit of information (BMD, census) already on some of their children but not all. Here is what I know:

According to census information, James BELL was born about 1789 in Fife (one census says Cupar, another says Leslie). He died 13 Jul 1870 in St. George, Edinburgh. His death was registered by his son, Andrew, however the names of James' parents were not included in the registration.

According to the 1841 census, Marion CAMPBELL was born between 1787-1791 (not in county) and she died 2 Jul 1847 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh. The entry in the OPR regarding her death indicates she was 58 which would make her year of birth 1789.

I have found the following offspring for James BELL and Marion CAMPBELL:

1) Mary was born abt 1819 in Dunbar, East Lothian and died 6 May 1887 in St. Cuthbert's Poorhouse. I can't find a marriage for her but on her death registration it indicated she was married to George McLATCHIE. I know Mary had at least one daughter named Marion (born abt 1848-died 1915, married George Wood);

2) William was born abt 1823 in West Barns, East or Midlothian and died 14 Jan 1890 in Blythswood, Glasgow. He married Catherine DONALDSON on 18 Nov 1844 in Glasgow. They had one daughter named Isabella (born abt 1842-died ?);

3) James was born 19 Oct 1824 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh. I don't have any additional information regarding James;

4) Thomas was born abt 1826 in Midlothian. He is on the 1841 census living with his parents and listed as a painter but I haven’t been able to find anything regarding him after that;

5) Elizabeth was born 29 Oct 1827 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh and died 22 Feb 1881 in Partick, Glasgow. She married James JOHNSTON on 2 Jun 1854 in Leith. They had five children, William (born 1555-died 1856), Marion (born 1856-died 1864), Euphemia (born 1858-died 1909, unmarried), Jemima (born 1860-died 1916, married Samuel Mulholland) and Elizabeth (born 1862-died 1874). Euphemia Galloway JOHNSTON was my g-grandmother. I have quite a bit of information regarding James, Elizabeth and their children;

6) Andrew was born 4 Dec 1831 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh and died 30 May 1875 in Cannongate, Edinburgh. He married Joan LOWRIE/LAURIE on 16 Feb 1855. They had six children, James (born 1855-died 1855), Andrew (1857-died 1914, married Helen Proud), Robert (born 1859-died ?), James (born 1861-died 1924, married Agnes Snape), Joan (born 1864-died 1890, married William Kirkwood) and Marion (born 1866-died 1945, married Hugh Nelson).

I haven't found a conclusive marriage entry for James BELL and Marion CAMPBELL but I have seen the marriage listed in the OPR for James BELL and Minny CAMPBELL in 1812 however I can’t confirm it is my couple. That James Bell was in the military and I’ve not been able to find any proof that my James was. And while some of the information about Minny fits my Marion, this marriage entry would be the only document I’ve come across where she’s called Minny.

If anyone thinks they are connected to anyone in this line, I'd like to hear from you. James and Marion are one of my biggest brickwalls.

Two questions:

1. Does the forum software allow for modifications to be made to the search feature? If so, is it possible to add "match whole word" and "case sensitive" type of options to the search parameters? One of the surnames I'm researching is Bell. When I search that surname I get all topics/posts where the letters "bell" appear which leads to a lot of false positives as I get posts or topics looking for Campbell, Isabell/Isabella, Annabell, etc. Another surname I'm researching is Love and I get pages and pages of search results that consist of "lovely lady" or "I'd love to hear from you" so a "case sensitive" feature would help a lot.

2. Is it possible to have the PM notifications that are sent out via email changed so the link goes to the actual PM received rather than to a reply page. I've received and sent countless blank PMs because of that link. I think most people would want to read the PM and then decide whether they want to reply rather than have the window open to reply before they can read the PM.

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Deleting a post
« on: Monday 23 March 09 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
How come we can delete our own posts in some forums but not others? We can delete our own posts in this forum (time limited option, I know) but I don't have that option in the Canada forum. How come?
