Hi

We have a mystery we can’t solve - we think our paternal GT grandfather wasn’t our biological gt grandfather?

My sister and I have had our our trees and DNA test results on Ancestry.co.uk for many years but we have no matches with anyone from our paternal great grandad’s line. His name was John Michael Robinson Lewis b. 1865 in Gloucester, UK and he was married to Annie Lucretia Howells who also used the maiden name Eskins.

I have matches with their children’s descendants and matches with Annie’s ancestor’s descendants but nothing from the John’s ancestors descendants.

A few years ago, I was contacted by a descendant of John’s ancestors to ask why I have him in my tree when we weren’t connected by DNA - and it started me thinking.

I have colour coded all of my DNA into family lines - not one Lewis connection other than from my grandmother’s siblings descendants.

My grandmother was the 7th out 8 children to John and Annie. They appear to have separated shortly after their 8th child and she moved in with another chap called Harold Nind and had a further 8 children with him. I have DNA matches their descendants.

Could it be that John M R Lewis wasn’t our biological great grandad? Could it be that he is but my sister and I don’t have much of his ancestors DNA?

Any advice on how we can investigate further would be most welcome!

Thanks
Jill

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / John Lewis Parish Record Look Up Please?
« on: Thursday 12 January 12 13:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I think I might have finally climbed over my brickwall!!

Please could someone look up the Parish records for John's marriage to Elizabeth Harris - here are the details:

John Lewis married Elizabeth Harris 2nd July 1820 in Gloucester St Michael, register reference is P154/14 IN 1/10.  I need to know what John's occupation and his father's occupation were - also possibly his date of birth and anything about witness James Robinson?

Also, hopefully his birth entry:

John Lewis born 24th March 1799 Gloucester St Aldgate, parents John and Margaret.  Would love to know father's occupation, mother's maiden name, address  if possible.

Thanks you!!

Jill

Hi

Would any of you kind Look up folk be willing to see if there is any information about John Lewis born 1810 in Gloucester please?

I have details of him with his second wife to Sophia Robinson from his marriage certificate (married in 16/7/1860 at the Baptist Chapel) - he is a widower, his occupation is as Iron Moulder Journeyman, living in Sweet Briar St, Gloucester and his  father is also called John Lewis.

I have also found John and Sophia in the 1861 Census - this time living in Kings Lane, Painswick - there is a transcript error and his birth year is listed as 1799 instead of 1810.  His occupation is labourer.

I think he must have died before the 1871 census as Sophia is on her own with her children James, John and Sophia in 5 Council St, Gloucester.  She later marries a Joshiah Butler, a baker and lives at 30 Brothers place, Gloucester

I'm struggling to pinpoint my John Lewis amongst the many other John Lewis's in the area.  I've tracked back through the 1841 and 1851 censuses and there is nothing I can identify him between the possible results.  I would love to find out any info about his first marriage - did he have any children etc?

I would be grateful for any help/info etc.

thanks

Hi,

If anyone is likely to be visiting the Leicester & Rutland Records Office in the new future, please could you look up a birth for me?

I've just discovered that my grandmother's sister Annie Sophie Elizabeth Lewis died shortly after giving birth.  She was unmarried, so I should imagine that the illegitmate child was probably kept a secret from the rest of the family.

Anyway, after searching on Ancestry.co I have found a baby Lewis born in Leicester in the same quarter in the BMD as my gt aunt's death.  His name was John Arthur Lewis registered in Jun 1907.  I would like to know if Annie was his mother if possible?  Is this something you'd be able to find in the records office?

I've also found a death certificate for a 1 year old John Arthur Lewis in Leicester in 1909, which is a really sad result.

Grateful for any help anyone can give me.

Hi

If anyone is visiting the Leicestershire & Rutland Records Office, would they mind looking up the details of my Gt Grandfather Harry Ashton in the Glen Parva Register of enlistments please?  I believe the register is LEICESTER MILITARY DISTRICT ENLISTMENT REGISTER (22D63/89)

He was a member of the Leicestershire Regiment and we believe he also was in the Boer War.  His details are as follows:
Harry Ashton, born 1873, Lubenham (nr. Market Harborough) Leicestershire, his parents were Samuel & Mary Ashton also from Lubenham.

I'd be grateful for any info.

Thank you
Jilly

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Gang Raid on Kibworth Pub??
« on: Monday 31 August 09 00:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've been trying to trace the brother of my maternal Grandfather, the brother was called Arthur Edward Ashton b. 14/12/1906 in Great Bowden.  Evidently he was a bit of a blacksheep and my aunt believes he may have been involved in a gang raid on a pub in Kibworth - possibly in the 1930s early 40s, so probably got sent to prison.  My mum and aunt believe he may have been called Ben by his friends and family, however I had another Gt Uncle  Ben  (Ben Archer) on my maternal grandmother's side so there may have been some confusion.

I live in Somerset now so its not easy for me to get to the Leicestershire & Rutland Records Office - and I wouldn't really know where to start re:newspaper or Prison archives.  Would anyone be kind enough to point me in the right direction?
thanks

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Medical Record Look Up at Records Office Please
« on: Sunday 01 March 09 09:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Is anyone able to look up a medical record at the Records Office at Wigston, please?  We are trying to find out more details of my Grandmother's death in 1940 and we understand that the information could be stored there.

Her name was Phyllis May Ashton, she died on the 22/10/1940, her dob. 20/7/1908 Welford, nr. Market Harborough, Leicestershire.

The information we have from her death certificate is that she died at St Luke's Hospital, Market Harborough on the 22/10/1940 - cause of death is Malignant Endocarditis although family stories say something different.   Her death was certified by Dr. Scott.

We would be grateful for any information or advice

Thank you

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Mexborough Parish Register Lookup Please
« on: Sunday 12 October 08 21:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone have access to the parish register for the The Parish Church, Mexborough?  I've hit a brickwall trying to find the birth place of my husband's grandfather, Thomas Evans.  I have his marriage certificate and wondered if his parish of birth may be on the parish register detailing his marriage??

He married Harriet Limb on 9th Sept 1907 at the Parish Church.  He was 28 and Harriet was 23.  Both of their addresses were list as New St, Mexborough but I believe that they had moved into the area after the 1901 census as I can't find any record of either of them in the Mexborough 1901 census.

I've really struggled to track Thomas as there are just so many who fit the bill - his father was also called Thomas Evans.

I really would be grateful if anyone could give me any help?  My only other hope is to wait for the release of the 1911 census as I live in Somerset.

Thank you
Jill
