Hi,

I am looking for help with some customs of the Travelling Community in the 1870's in Ireland. I know it's a long way back.

I am wondering if a Traveller married a settled person and maybe chose to or was forced to give up the Traveller way of life -  Was there  such a custom as burying an empty coffin on it's head to symbolise the ending of the Traveller way of life?   This would have been back in the 1870's in Ireland.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone can help me decipher some references to Banns/Dispensation on
two marriges in church records.

I would like to know what the initials  D.S or D H mean under the heading Denuntiationes on this marriage record - Hoping I will be able to attach two photos....

I think Denuntiationes means Publications  possibly publication of the banns??

The second query also relates to a marriage entry in a church record -

It says "Dispensaton in 4 & 4  IV ( could be 10) - Con Gratibus"

Does the 4& 4 refer to months maybe?   Not sure if it is 10 or IV after that.

I don't know what the Con Gratibus means?  Is it with guidance???

I originally posted this on the "Cork, Ireland" board but was advised to post it here for the "deciphering Latin experts"!!!

Cork / John Coughlan, Cullenagh, Kildorrery - Myres Kildorrery
« on: Tuesday 21 February 17 21:23 GMT (UK)  »

Hi,

I am hoping some expert here might be able to help me find my GGGrandmother's parents.

Her name was Hanora ( Nano) Coughlan of Cullenagh ( sometimes spelling Cuilinagh), Kildorrery.   She married John Leonard on 7th February 1885 at RC Chapel at Shrahaila in the registration district of Kildorrery.  Her father is named John Coughlan, on marriage cert, and a farmer  (deceased.)

I haven't been able to find a birth for her - showing her father as John, lots of other Hanora Coughlans with various spellings.

I did find a marriage for a John Coughlan to Catherine Myres ( sometimes spelling Myers)
on Feb 6th 1864 Kildorrery.

I am really trying to find her birth/baptism details which would show me her mother's name or her parents marriage.

I would be delighted if someone could point me in the right direction or know this family.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I recently came across an old "DESMOND" family photo album in my mother's home place in
Co. Cork, Ireland.  These photos were sent to my mother's family from Canada.

Two of the photos were taken in Canada.  The 1st was of Humphrey Desmond born in Co. Cork Ireland about 1871.  He was living at Pinkerton, Ontario.

The second photo was of  Cleophus Desmond and she wrote of the "Old Desmond homestead " at
Pinkerton.  She also mentioned she was living at Quinn Blvd. Longueuil, Quebec.  She also mentioned Mrs. H.L Packard ( turns out to be her married name).   Having searched the net I did find that she married Howard L.Packard and was living in Chilliwack, B. C.  Humphrey Desmond was Cleo's father.   I am looking for any ancestors of Humphrey & Cleo and am anxious to find the link to our two Desmond families.

Humphrey's parents appear to be Patrick Desmond b 1837 Cork Ireland and Martha Wall born 1838
Ireland.   Patrick died 1911 in Greenock, Bruce South, Ontario.   Martha Desmond died 1909 Chepstow, Ontario.

Patrick & Martha had 11 children -
Mary Ann, John, Thomas, Ellen, Catherine, Johanna, Humphrey, William, Martha, Margaret, & Jeremiah.   Many of these names are associated with the Desmond family.

I would love to hear from any ancestors of the above.

Cork / Byrne/s Burns of High Street, Cork 1911
« on: Monday 16 June 14 21:48 BST (UK)  »

I am searching for relatives of the Bryne/ Burns (various spellings) family of High Street Cork in 1901 census

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Cork_Urban_No__5/High_Street/1115081/

Head of Household was Timothy Byrne aged 54  widower,  (He married Mary Donovan 30 Sept 1869. Mary died before 1901).  Living with him in 1901 were his daughters Hannah aged 22 born 6 April 1878, Kate 18, Jane 16 and Timothy 14.

Timothy & Mary seem to have had other children -
John b 1873, Thomas b 1875 , Mary b 1880,  William b 1870 (William living in High Street in 1901 with his own family).  The surname for these children when christened was "Burns" and in 1901 it was Byrne.

I am anxious to know if Hannah married?    As far as I know Kate & Jane did not marry, although not sure about this.   I found both Kate & Jane living with their aunt in 1911 but don't know what became of them in latter years.  Would love to know what became of them?

Any help would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance

Mayo / Emigration from North Mayo 1883/1884 ( Blacksod Bay emigration assistance)
« on: Thursday 25 July 13 19:22 BST (UK)  »

Hi to all on Mayo forum.

Just wanted to let you all know about a new website with some information
on assisted emigration in the years 1883/1884 from the North Mayo area.

A commemoration has just taken place in Mayo to mark the 130th Anniversary
of the first sailing from Blacksod Bay to America & Canada.

This assisted emigration was arranged by a man named James Tuke, a quaker.
This was initiated in an attempt to address starvation in the West of Ireland.

It assisted 3,000 people from  Achill, Erris and Belmullet areas of Mayo in the first
year.  A year or so late it helped a further 500 most of whom were relations of the
first group.

The ships departed from Blacksod Bay.

The ships' manifest is available to view on
www.blacksodbayemigrants.ie

In some cases it gives the townland area where the emigrants came from so this
would be very helpful in trying to find out where exactly your ancestors may have
originated.

Good luck with your searches, hope this is some help.

Cork / Martin Walsh & Ellen Merritt Co Cork
« on: Thursday 16 May 13 21:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Wondering if any one has Martin Walsh and Ellen Merritt in their family tree?

I don't have much to go on.

They were supposed to have been married in Cork - parish not known and they
had a son John M. born possibly May 1863 ,just before the civil registers for births started.

I did find some Ellen Merrits in Churchtown, in North Cork but one of them married
a John Barry.    I also found an Ellen Merrick married to a James Walsh in Inniscarra in 11 Feb 1847
I also found a Martin Walsh Killeagh but he married an Ellen Linehan.  I also came across
a Martin Walsh married to an Ellen Wall at Ballymacoda.  So no luck so far.

I don't know which parish they came from unfortunately.

John emigrated to America about 1880.

I would love if some one could throw some light on things of if they had any of these
Walshs in their family tree.  I know it is difficult but worth a try.

Thanks
