Europe / Death in France - c1984 - where to start?
« on: Saturday 12 January 19 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all and Happy New Year.

I am trying to find information on a relative who I believe passed away in France in or around 1984. He was originally from Scotland. Any ideas on where to start? Ancestry hasnt proved very fruitful and he has a very common name.

Found some possible relations in an old village directory. One is listed under Vinters in the list of local services. I've never come across this before could anyone tell me what a Vinter was?

Ayrshire / Help with a brick wall - Daniel McCormick Murray born Kilmarnock 1903
« on: Saturday 19 November 16 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.
I have been searching and searching to no avail for my mother's half brother Daniel McCormick Murray, born either 21st or 31st October 1903 in Kilmarnock (North Hamilton Street), to Daniel Murray and Margaret (ms Gordon). I believe the family still lived in Kilmarnock in 1911 although haven't found them on the census as yet but the address should be 31 Park Street. My main problem is it looks like Daniel McCormick Murray could be David as the writing on the register entry could read as Daniel or David. I have found records relating to his 3 sisters and his parents, his mother died young and his father remarried to my grandmother. I just can't find Daniel. Any help would be great here as I've exhausted Scotland's People, Ancestry, FreeBMD, Genes Reunited, etc. It would appear I am not alone in this as others searching the same line don't seem to have had much luck.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone could help me find any info on my mothers cousin who emigrated to Canada in 1955. Hope this is in the right place!

These are the only details I have for him:

Douglas M (possibly McKirdy) Allison born 3rd July 1931, Whiting bay, Isle of Arran, Scotland.
Found on passenger list of the Corinaldo (Donaldson Line) 1st April 1955, departure port Glasgow, Scotland, destination port St John, New Brunswick, Canada.

Not sure if any connection but there is a Daniel McKirdy also named on the passenger list who may have been a cousin.

Ireland / Adoption resources?
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 18:49 BST (UK)  »
On behalf of a friend I'm wondering if any of you rootchatters would know where to start in tracing someone who may (most likely) have been adopted as a baby in Northern Ireland, roughly around 1984. The details are a bit patchy but my friend was led to believe baby (her cousin) was adopted, he'd be around 30 now and she has some names ie the mother and fathers name and a possible name for the baby, but other than that nothing. Realise this may not be the right place to post (sorry mods couldn't find anthing specific to adoption here) but any help or advice would be appreicated.

I've come up up with the idea of having a map and plotting on the map where my ancestors lived. I plan to begin with the Eastwood Parish and pinpoint all the known addresses I have for each ancestor.  Sort of a visual guide to where they all lived. But, don't know where to start! I've got a couple of old maps saved on my laptop which I could print off and put pins on for each ancestor but what I'd really like is some sort of software. Anyone have any ideas what I could use for this? Or any other suggestions?

Renfrewshire / County Buildings? Thornliebank, Eastwood
« on: Sunday 09 March 14 14:49 GMT (UK)  »
My father, his uncles and aunts and several other family members were either born, married or lived at the County Buildings, Thornliebank. My guess is these were some sort of tenement or other social housing? There is nothing I can find on this building online and a woman I spoke to some years ago through Giffnock Library felt sure they were actually known as something else and were most likely demolished in the 60s. Does anyone have any further info on them? Or pictures of the buildings?map of where they were? The rest of the family seem to have lived in the Main St or Harriet St at various times (Pollokshaws). Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Derry (Londonderry) / Look up please: Murray - Magaherafelt or Belfast c1877
« on: Monday 18 January 10 15:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, im hoping someone can help me. Im trying to find my grandfathers date of birth in order for my mum to get her passport.
His name was Daniel Murray and I know his parents lived in Magherafelt when they were first married (November 1860) and at least 2 of their children were born there, i have their names and dates of birth but i cannot find his. (John b 1865, Margaret b 1868).
His parents names were Daniel and Jane (ms McCormack/McCormick).
Daniel was married in Belfast in 1900 then moved to Scotland where his first wife subsequently died, he then married my grandmother.
He died in 1956 aged 78 so i would presume his date of birth would be around 1877.
Despite looking through my grandmother and aunts possesions we cannot find his birth certificate so i am trying everything i can to find his date and place of birth in order for my mum to be able to add this to her first passport application. I am taking her to Tunisia for her 70th this year so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
