Maps - plotting ancestors on to a map - software?
« on: Monday 10 March 14 20:06 GMT (UK) »
I've come up up with the idea of having a map and plotting on the map where my ancestors lived. I plan to begin with the Eastwood Parish and pinpoint all the known addresses I have for each ancestor.  Sort of a visual guide to where they all lived. But, don't know where to start! I've got a couple of old maps saved on my laptop which I could print off and put pins on for each ancestor but what I'd really like is some sort of software. Anyone have any ideas what I could use for this? Or any other suggestions?

Linlithgow/New Kilpatrick/Milngavie - Dick, Edgar
Edinburgh/Leith/Milngavie/Stirling - John Reid
Belfast/County Derry/Magherafelt - Murray, McCormick, McCormack

Hi Irene,

there are many topics on presentations here
Topic: RootsChat Topics: Organising and Presenting your Family History
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,158638.0.html

on of them looks particularly interesting for your query:
Topic: Mapping the travels of our ancestors
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,146629.0.html

regards,
Bob

p.s. I've moved your query to the "FH Programs, Organisation, Presentation " board :)

Just a thought?!

Google Maps and Google+ have a feature called "My Places".

If you have a Google+ account, maybe you could use that feature - and it's free! ;D

The 6" & 1" Ordnance Survey maps of England & Wales (1842-1952) are now on-line at the National Library of Scotland (maps.nls.uk). Digital copies can be purchased for £15 - on CD, several hundred megabyte file size.

I try & get free maps where I can.
You'd be surprised what's out there if you put in Sunderland old maps or something like.
I then paste the map into Picture Publisher & put a number next to each address & put a reference down the side.

If you put your family tree on the TribalPages website you have the option of adding  places of birth etc. on a map if you add postcodes. It shows on Google earth maps and you can even zoom in to a close up of the street (as it is now of course!). I think it is free unless you wish to print off family trees. That costs about £15--£20p.a. subscription.I can thoroughly recommend it. I looked at one or two other means of doing a family tree and was not very impressed with them.

The only problem with that is the further back in my tree I go, the more the addresses don't exist anymore. Some entire streets have gone and been replaced. I think I'm going to try and get hold of some old maps first then I can plot them out and see if I can match up the addresses to where they would be now against new maps.
