World War One / George White, Scottish Rifles. Help Please
« on: Monday 01 April 24 18:35 BST (UK)  »
Hoping you kind folks can help me.

Been searching for George White for a while now, with limited success.
I know he was in the Scottish Rifles as per his marriage certificate of 1905 which shows him as a Private at Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow.
By 1911 he is living at Hamilton Barracks, his occupation, Army Bugler but then moves back to Maryhill.

I’ve looked for him in WW1 Service Records so far without success but I’ve recently come across an entry for a George White, Service Number 7158, Scottish Rifles in WW1 Pension Ledgers & Index Cards and wondered if he could be who I’m looking for.

Does anyone have access to these records who would be willing to take a look?

I don’t know what information it may hold or how I could prove it was the correct person.
He was married to Margaret H Cameron and had 7 children (that I know of). Also, on one of his childrens birth certificates (1917) it states he was a Corporal, 3rd Battalion Scottish Rifles but also at Tramcar Conductor ???

I would be so grateful if anyone could help me.

Canada Lookup Request / Lord Wellington Greenwood
« on: Saturday 20 June 20 15:28 BST (UK)  »
Once again, I'm asking if anyone could please help?

I've found a death for a Lloyd W Greenwood died 29/11/1940 at Langley BC and I'm wondering if he could actually be Lord (a name not a title) Wellington Greenwood born 1867 Hebden Bridge/Todmorden, England
Please could someone check to see if there are any newspaper obituaries or any other info for this man.

Long story but from what I've found so far he leaves a wife and children in England and turns up in the U.S with a different wife and family!!
A daughter from England emigrated to Canada and lived in the Langley area which makes me wonder if they were reconciled and Lloyd and Lord are the same person.

Many thanks

United States of America / Missing John Caldwell
« on: Wednesday 27 November 19 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I’m hoping you kind people out there can help me.
I’ve been searching for sometime now for information on what became of an ancestor of mine...

John Caldwell born 16/01/1878 in Glasgow to Robert & Isabella Caldwell (maiden name Murray).
I have lots of info up to the 1901 census, which shows him with his parents and siblings living in Lambhill Street, Govan, Glasgow then nothing!
I’ve gone down various ‘avenues’ but never found anything conclusive. Then, recently a couple of things came to light....

A relative recalls (as a child in the mid 1960’s) a visitor to her parents house whom her father called uncle John! She also recalls her father taking a phone call a couple of years later informing him that uncle John had died. She thought this may have been approx 1967.

I’ve searched various death records but drawn a blank. However, last week, I came across something which I think could be a record of him!
Social Security Applications and Claims index...

John Murray Caldwell
Born 16/11/1878 (could this possibly be a transcription error??)
Birthplace U.K.
Father Robert Caldwell
Mother Isabella Murray
SSN 573167867

Notes... Feb 1937 name listed as John Murray Caldwell

Would anyone be able to access anymore information that might be held that might tell me what became of him and when he died?

Of course, this could be another John Caldwell but I’m hoping this could be the one.

Many thanks

Canada / Trying to find what happened to James Lawson!
« on: Monday 21 August 17 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone help me?
I've been searching for James Tierney Lawson for sometime now and think I've discovered him in Canada!
It's a long story but basically James (born 18/03/1883 Ayr, Scotland and Plasterer by trade) abandoned his pregnant wife and child in 1911 and disappeared!!!
I've now discovered a James Lawson in the Canadian WW1 Attestation papers, signing up in Montreal.
He states that his birth date is 18/03/1884 born Ayr, Scotland and is a Plasterer. He also states his next of kin is his wife Lillie Lawson??? This is not the wife he left behind in Scotland!
I would love to be able to find out what happened to him. Did he stay in Canada, have more children?
When did he die?
If any of you kind people out there could answer these questions I'd be so appreciative.

Many thanks
Andrea

Canada Lookup Request / Looking for Clara Fethney Holmes.
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I live in the UK and hope someone can help me find an ancestor who possibly died in Canada.

Clara (aka Dolly) Fethney Holmes was born 17/03/1908 Niagara Falls to John James Holmes & Clara Shasby.

She married John Shannon Green 03/03/1928 Stamford, Welland.

I know nothing of her after this time!
I did find a death of a John S Green in 1958 but I'm uncertain if this is her husband.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Andrea

Essex Lookup Requests / Starling marriage look-up please
« on: Thursday 27 September 12 20:43 BST (UK)  »
I don't have many details but I wonder if some kind person out there could have a look for the marriage of Dulcie Starling to George W Matthews. All I know is that it occurred in 1924 in the West Ham area. I am particularly interested to know the name of the grooms father.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Kendal Parish Registers/Holmes Marriage
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 21:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find an elusive ancestor and hoping this is the one!
Unfortunately the only info I have is:

Sarah Holmes (marriage) to Edward James Birkett  March 1/4 1884 Kendal.

Would a kind person out there be able to check this out - I would need Sarahs fathers name and occupation - or is it an impossible task and I will just have to risk spending more money on a (wrong?) certificate.

Hope someone can help.
I will be sooooo grateful

Ireland / Sarah Taylor - Help Please!!
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to research my husbands family tree and I'm stuck!!!
His grandmother - Sarah Taylor, is my problem.
Sarah died in 1942 aged 59yrs. According to my father in law, she came from Ireland, he's not sure where but possibly Derry.
I contacted PRONI and paid for a search to be done c1883 for Sarahs birth certificate. However, the certificate they sent is not the right one.
On Sarahs marriage certificate (she was married at St Margarets R C Church, Ayr, Scotland) her parents are shown as William Taylor, Coachman and Catherine Taylor nee Docherty both deceased.
I would love to be able to tell my father in law more about his mother and her family (he was 14 when she died), but Im not sure what to do next.
Can anyone help?

Thankyou
