Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Taylor marriages St Peter Port
« on: Thursday 21 September 06 05:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm hoping someone can help me with marriage dates and spouse maiden names for the sons of my GG Gfather?

I have some verified info and some additional info I have gleaned from 1901 census. All were born in St Peter Port

Alfred John Taylor b 1854, by 1901 was a butcher married to
Mary E le Huray b 1860, daughter of Thomas le Huray and had six children

Charles Frederick Taylor b 1860, by 1901 was a builder married to Drina Ozanne b abt 1870 daughter of Peter Ozanne b 1806, Pilot at St Sampson 1841, and had two children

Theodore Frederick Taylor b 1857, by 1901 was a butcher married to Mary? and had two children.

I also have a query for William Alfred Taylor b 1850 who appeared in the 1861 census but may have left the island as he didn't appear in the subsequent census.

Any help in these searches would be most appreciated.

My closest links to Guernsey are to the names Chappel and Penney

Many thanks
Tony Evans

Somerset / Re: Can anyone tell me where Lyncombe and Widcombe is?
« on: Monday 04 September 06 06:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Lyncombe and Widcombe are adjacent to and south of the river avon.
Extends from Bathwick  to Oldfield. Encompasses an area known as Holloway and takes in Beechen Cliff and up to Bear Flat.
Holloway was redeveloped in the 1960's to improve the Wells Road.
Three major routes run up through the area to Combe Down and Odd Down, they are, Lyncombe Hill, Prior Park Road and Widecombe Hill

Hi
I remember Prior Park Road, running from Widcombe up to the Priory, where it became Ralph Allen Drive.

As Ralph Allen Drive is comparatively new (mid 1900's) I suspect that Prior Park originally ended at The Priory boundary, especially as there were established footpaths there.

Now this is my recollection of the area in the 1960's when I lived there

London and Middlesex / Re: Frederick EVANS - Cook -St Marylebone 1920

Have you looked for her under both her maiden name and her name after her first marriage? Usually I would expect her to be under the name of her first husband, but sometimes they do revert to the original maiden name.

Remember also to look a little after the birth of the first child (was your father their eldest?) just in case. ;)

Many thanks for your advice. I have tried her maiden name and the name from her first marriage. She had four children from this marriage and i was able to find records for this marriage and the death of her first husband and births of the four children.

I continued my search past 1924 when my Dads sister was born but with no success.

I'm beginning to think it was one of those marriages that never happened, just a factual record for a birth.javascript:replaceText(' ???', document.postmodify.message);
Huh

Many thanks for your advice once agin, it is appreciated

London and Middlesex / Frederick EVANS - Cook -St Marylebone 1920
« on: Saturday 19 August 06 21:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have my fathers Birth Certificate(1920) and his younger sisters(1924), father is recorded as Frederick Evans, occupation Resturant Cook.
They were living Aybrook Street and the registration district is St Marylebone, sub district St Mary.

I know my Gmother (Violet Algate)was previously married and widowed but I can find no record of a marriage of her to Frederick Evans.
I have no other information for him.

Any advice regarding the search direction I might take would be appreciated.

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Weymouth Street, Bath
« on: Friday 18 August 06 20:19 BST (UK)  »
Weymouth Street is in the Walcot district of Bath.
It is a short (perhaps 40 houses)residential street that runs from the London Road to the Avon River. The next major intersection on the London Road is Cleveland Bridge./Bathwick Street The buildings are terrace Georgian. They front directly onto the footpath and have small enclosed yards at the rear.

Walcot is about a 15 minute walk from the society areas of Royal Circus, Pultney Street and Grosvenor.

Now from memory, as I haven't been to Bath for almost 40 years, the buildings here are 3 or 4 storeys high, with the roof space being the fourth storey. It is probable that different families lived on each floor.

The buildings were definately there when I left Bath in the 70's, tho' with progree(sic) I don't know if they remain. I understand a supermarket chain has built in the area and they may have been sacrificed.
