Thanks for the information - I am just hoping there might be a snippet somewhere (possibly with the bond) which might make sense if it is the family I hope to find or even to rule it out as a possibility.  Occasionally there is a profession quoted, even an age or marital status. 

Maybe I could get to Oxford to look one day but it would be nice to save the trip as I am not aware of other ancestors in the county.  I will look into your suggestions.

I wonder whether someone is able to check the details connected with the marriage of George Randall and Mary Field at St Giles, Oxford - 13 Jun 1785.  I would be interested to know whether this marriage was by licence or banns if possible.

I am not sure whether these are my ancestors or not but I am looking for a marriage between a George Randoll and a Mary between 1784 and 1787.  This is the only one I can spot that may fit the bill. Their first known child was christened in late 1787 in Wiltshire so I would not expect many children from this couple to have been born in Oxford so if George and Mary perhaps had a lot of children in Oxford then I should look elsewhere again.

I would very much appreciate any help in trying to locate a particularly elusive marriage.
