London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Aitken - Woolwich
« on: Tuesday 22 November 05 05:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, the certificate I have is a certified copy dated 22/1/1970. Celia was my mother and Elizabeth Brown was my g'mother.  Celia was the  youngest of my g'mothers children.  she had quite a number to her 1st husband Bertie Brown. Elizabeth joined up with Frederick Aitken after obtaining a separation order from Bertie in 1916, so I don't suppose they married.  I was lucky enough to find Elizabeth & Frederick on the 1919 & 1920 electoral records for Woolwich at 178 Powis St. on a recent visit to the UK.  I also have the death certificate for Frederick 13/6/1920 at the same address.

I have also come across the marriage in 1900 but have dismissed it as both the first and surname are not correct.

My mother was Catholic and I have been unable to find any record of christening or confirmation in her papers, unlike my father who was CoE and kept his.

How would I be able to get hold of information contained in the records for Woolwich baptisms that jorose mentions?

Hope this hasnt confused the issue to much but I have not been able to get any further on this for a number of years and any help is much appreciated.
Thanks Dee

I would like to find an alternative record to a certified copy of a birth certificate I have.  The certificate is for Celia Eliza Aitken born 6/1/1919 at 178 Powis st. Woolwich.  This certificate names the mother as Catherine Annie Aitken formerly Jones, and the father as Frederick Alexander Aitken.  I have not been able to find a marriage for these 2 and family insist that there is a mistake as Celia's mother was Elizabeth Sarah Brown nee Kirby.  I would appreciate any suggestions as to obtaining a church record or a copy of the original transcript if such a thing exists, many thanks Dee

Hi Tati, thanks heaps for the additional information.  I will try and put it all together.  I have ordered the certificate for Grace king so hopefully it will help me to go further.  I noticed that your profile has you as being in France, we have been receiving news items of the riots etc so hope you are not in an area which is effected.
cheers Dee

Hi Tati, thanks again for your speedy response. I think the occupation could be Drayman as it appears on the 1881 census for Thomas.  I will try an investigate the Gracie King line as it seems to be a great idea.  the information I have on the Pleasants line is as follows :  1881 census rg11 1708/122 lists William, wife Lucy (nee Turkentine) and 3 children Emma, Harry & Ellen.  I also have details of marriage for William & Lucy W. Ham 4a 21 24/3/1870.  the vital records index lists both fathers as being Thomas.  I also have details of the marriage of Thomas Pleasants to Albina Upson Sudbury 12/561 Mar qtr 1846 and thats as far as I have gone.  Needless to say I have no proof of this side of the family yet. Cheers Dee

Hi Tanja,
thanks once again for the info.  I have looked at the 2 web sites you gave me and have managed to get some further information on the area.  The marriage for William & Rebecca is also interesting, please excuse my ignorance  but how do I prove they are the parents of my Walter.  The marriage certificate for Walter & Ellen was in 1896 at Poplar but I am unable to read the parish details. It also indicates the marriage took place after banns and the residence at time of marriage is also incomplete, it just gives a street address as 63 Barchester street for both parties?  The father of Walter is recorded as a Hay binder so that is a positive  and ellens father is also a William recorded as a publican.  Also not sure if I should address this as Tati or Tanja, cheers Dee

Hi Tati, thanks for all of the information, my marriage certificate for Walter only shows him as having the one name - no john. The witnesses are an E King and an Emma Pleasants.  The marriage certificate shows William as deceased and profession as a Hay Binder so may be this is the right family.  I am still not sure as the age of Walter seems to change, the 1901 census shows him as 30 and I am 100% sure this is my Walter as my grandfather is on it as being 4yrs old. Do you know if Little Hadham has parish records - not sure where this is?  It is very hard getting information in Australia and I appreciate your help, Many thanks Dee3

I am looking for the birth of Walter King abbt 1870/71, I have found him on the 1901 census for High Ongar, Essex with a wife Ellen and 2 sons William & Robert.  His birth place is listed as Herts, Little hadham.  I also have a marriage certificate for Walter and Ellen 8/8/1896 at age 26, reg district Poplar, father listed as William King (deceased).  I have found numerous Walters born about this time but none that match all of the above info. Can some one please help point me in the right direction as I already have one wrong birth certificate.
Many thanks, Dee3
