Australia / Need Help re- Woombye Cemetery, record of Aird Family
« on: Sunday 03 June 07 14:55 BST (UK)  »
Have been trying to trace Aird family and came across entry in this cemetery for a Charlotte Aird, died 21/4/1887, born 1821
and an Archibald Haswell Aird, died Oct 1932, born 1854

Can anyone tell me how to find out more details, eg headstone inscriptions, certificates etc.
I am interested to find out if there is mention of Charlotte having been married to a John Aird from Stranraer, who died prior to her moving to Australia from Glasgow.
Is there any mention of children as I believe Archibald Haswell to be one of them?

Many Thanks

Sorry folks but forgot to ask how you go about tracing a death certificate in Australia?

Thanks

Hello Monica and Hello Tom,
So much new info, for which many thanks.

Your last post Monica is of some interest as the name Haswell is my wife's grandfathers middle name! Her fathers name being Archibald Alexander McCord Aird.
Stranraer, Wigtonshire seems to be the source for this period.
However, John is still causing concern.....
......John (Seaman) and Charlotte are the parents of Alexander born 28/5/1850
......John (retired Seaman) and Charlotte in 1871 census with son Alexander age 20, Archibald aged 16,Thomas aged 14
......John (Seaman)and Elizabeth? in 1861 census with son Alexander aged 10,Archibald aged 6 and Thomas aged 4
Names, Ages and Places of Birth all tally except for John's age...65 in 71 and 50 in 61.
Three questions....a mistake in recording John's age?
Could Charlotte have had middle name Eliz and they were wrongly recorded?
Is it all coincidence and I ignore the 61 census?
He appears to have been born 1810/11 but I still can't find him.

Out of interest where and how did you come up with an Elizabeth Aird deceased 1855?
Tom,
There appears, from talking to family thet John's Father was also called John and his mother Margaret, however family thought Margaret's surname may have been "Stein", I can find no record of this marriage so I'm now wondering if your Margaret "Steven" may be the one with things getting confused over the years.

I'm now going to sit down and double check from the beginning again...starting with my wife!

Thanks again for all the trouble both of you have gone to.

Hello again,

Good of you to give your time.

Death cert tells she was a pauper who died in city poorhouse, usual residence 36 Annfield ? St .Only ref to John is to say he is deceased and was a blacksmith.
He continues to prove elusive, as does his marriage to Charlotte.

Hello Tom,
Havn't downloaded M.B. death cert yet, however do have marriage cert. Unfortunately only states.... John Aird, Blacksmith, Anderston & Mary Burnett residing there. No other info.

I have to admit I was considering the possibility of wrong John Aird but the families, names dates and places of birth all correspond!

Thanks again for your time

Many thanks Tom,
Your entry mentioning the children and the Stranraer connection appears to be the correct family. I now have entry from 1871, 1861 and 1851 census.
Re your thoughts...Male side not R.C. don't know about McCord side.
If was "mixed" marriage how could I find marriage certificate as this certificate still eludes me?
1851....wife named as Charlotte
1861....wife named as Elizabeth  doesn't add up!
1871....wife named as Charlotte
Think 1st wife a Mary Burnett   married 19/6/1836 in Barony, this would account for 2 older children (can't find death certificate for Mary)

Thanks again

Hello,
I have an ancestor Alexander Kemp who married a Janet Emslie on 9/12/1789 in Rayne.
Known to have a son Alexander and a daughter Janet born circa 1796.
My interest is in the Kemp line which I've traced down through, Old Machar to Dundee and Glasgow.
If you think any of this may be of use to you then please get in touch.

Cheers.

John Aird married Charlotte McCord sometime between 1836 and 1851, however I am unable to find any matching certificate on ScotlandsPeople.
I believe she emigrated to Australia after his death,( which I can't track), with some of her children, so, I'm also unable to get any information from her death certificate. Both born Ayrshire though known to be living in the Parish of St George in Glasgow at time of 1871 census.
To complicate matters I believe him to have had 3 wives, though from my results Charlotte and an Elizabeth appear to overlap!
Anyone got any advice on how to resolve any of this?
Believed to have married 1840-1850

Many Thanks
