Fortunately, there is a volume of work that will help you.  Scottish Emigration to Canada prior to Confederation is a four-volume set that uses multiple sources to list the known Scottish emigrants who came to Canada prior to 1867 and where they came from.  I don't believe it is available online, but most libraries have it.  I have access through my local library, and can have a look the next time I'm there, but perhaps there's someone on the forum who has them handy.

Do you have access to Ancestry? If so, you can search the Canadian passenger records by looking for Welsh aboard the Manitoban arriving on September 30, 1877.  They must have left almost immediately after their mother's funeral which would make sense if there were no parents left to care for the younger kids.

I found a passenger record for a Robert and Eliza coming to Canada in September 1877 aboard the Manitoban, bound for Stratford. Ages are not given; marked with an "a" while adults have ages given.  I'm not entirely sure what that stands for.  Also with them is a James Welsh.  All are noted as single.

What were your John's parents' names?

Unfortunately, even if there was a death record for Robert in 1883, it would not name the parents as that information was not recorded in that timeframe.

I checked the death registrations for Stratford for March 1883 and came up with a blank; however, in the 1881 census, there is a Robert Welsh in Stratford, aged 17, born Scotland, living with John & Mary.  There are younger children in the household, but also another teenager, Elizabeth, aged 15, so it is possible that Robert is John's son from a first marriage, or he may be a nephew. Unfortunately, the 1881 census doesn't list relationships.

Unless you are extremely lucky, these records are scarce.  Civil registration did not begin in Ontario until 1869, so you would be looking for a church record and most have not survived.  There are District Marriage records which were submitted by the various ministers of the time, but they only represent a small proportion of the marriages which took place. In that time frame, it would have been part of the Home District, and they are part of Ancestry.ca's marriage collection, and your couple do not show up.

Sorry, I didn't get notified of your reply.  The record is available from Ancestry.

You're welcome.  BTW, the name of the town is Tillsonburg (correct spelling).   ::)

Found a death record for another daughter, Mary Irwin, in Barton Township (Wentworth County, Ontario), aged 90, in 1934, daughter of Jacob Chapman, and (blank) Hogg, both born in Ireland. Had lived in the province her whole life. Born in Nelson Township.
