Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Elizabeth FORD in Cheddar after 1861
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Philip,

I cannot find any trace of her in the 1871, 1881, or 1891 census in Somerset.

Is it possible that she remarried? There are a number of marriages shown for Elizabeth Ford. I have checked these with census entries for her in some of the married names but none appeared to match details you have given.

Best wishes,

Jo

Hello there,

You may find it worthwhile to contact the Chester Heritage and History Centre on Bridge St Row, Chester. This is housed in the old St Michael's Church. They have their own archive, including a Digital Image Bank, specifically on Chester City itself.

 Their web site is: http://www.chester.gov.uk/tourism_and_leisure/culture_and_leisure/chester_history_and_heritage.aspx

E-Mail: chh-- at --chester.gov.uk

Queens Street still exists and is in Chester city centre. There are 2 churches there, one of which just has the front remaining and this forms the back entrance to Tesco. The other is known as Queen Street Christian Centre and I thnik this was a Welsh Methodist church originally.

Good luck.

Jo.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Christiana Williams Wrexham 1846

Hello again,

The IGI also has 2 further baptisms, both Malpas, St Oswald.

26/01/1817 George Williams, son of John and Christian Williams.
18/08/1822 John Williams, son of John and Christian Williams.

These were entered by an LDS member. they need to be verified with the Parish Registers.

I have looked at the PRs for Malpas for Williams baptisms myself. I recall that there were very many of these. I take it that it is as Malpas is relatively close to the Welsh borders.

There appear to be Welch children baptised in the 1820s by Thomas and Mary Welch.

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: BRETTON HALL, CHESTER
« on: Wednesday 21 January 09 19:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I once lived very close to Bretton and this is in Wales, in Flintshire in fact. It is about 3 miles over the Welsh border with Chester.

Bretton is a small hamlet, near to Broughton and about 3 miles from Hawarden, the Gladstone family seat. In recent years it has been ruined by development, roads and retail park.

I think but am not certain, that Bretton Hall is still there.

This would be covered by the Flintshire Record Office in Hawarden, tel 01244 532364.

Hello Val,

Just to confirm that Cuddington is in Cheshire, it is near Delamere, sort of Middlewich/Sandiway area. Also, that Hampton is in Cheshire too. This is in south Cheshire and the nearest place of size is Malpas.

I did find a marriage on the IGI this was for John Williams and Christian Welch in St Oswald, Malpas on 12/11/1813. The name is not quite right but looks a strong possibility. Malpas would be near to the bride's parish.

Hope this helps you for a start.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Address search 1950 Chester Please
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 19:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Mariac,

The address of St George's Crescent, Queen's Park, Chester is correct. The road is there to this day and I know it well. Not sure when these houses were built.

You might be better sending to the Cheshire Record Office and ask them to see if they can do a quick look up for you. They have a wide variety of Directories and also the Electoral Rolls for some years. I think they will do a 20 minute search for free, more than that is chargeable. Their site is at http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/recoff/

Good luck,

Jo

Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Rook Lane Presbyterian Chapel, Frome
« on: Friday 09 January 09 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,

I don't have these records but can suggest you contact Frome Museum as they hold quite a bit of information there. I know they have a database of names of people in the Frome area. Their website is on http://www.fromemuseum.org/index.htm and you can E-Mail them on fromemuseum[at]tiscali.co.uk     Replace [at] with @

I believe the museum is closed until March but there may be someone dealing with the queries in the meantime.

Armed Forces / Boer Warand Strathcona Horses information - help please.
« on: Thursday 04 December 08 12:11 GMT (UK)  »
Seeking information on my relative, John Edgar Harding, who is buried in the graveyard of the church of St Mary the Virgin, in Cloford, Somerset. His  gravestone reads,"J.E.Harding died 11 February 1901, Commander in Chief's bodyguard, formerly of Strathcona Horses, died of his wounds". His wife Mary, is also buried in the same plot.

He is an ancestor of mine and I have found out he was a lieutenant in the Boer War who would have been bodyguard to General Kitchener, the Commander in Chief at that time. According to the Boer War web site, he was killed at Uitkyk.

Up to now, I have been unable to establish his age at date of death. I believe the Strathcona Horses to be a Canadian Regiment. I don't know if he would have lived in Canada to have served in this.

Can anyone suggest good sources to research his service in both the Boer War and Strathcona Horses? A further complication is that so far, I have been unable to find his birth and marriage registrations. Also, I cannot locate neither him, nor his wife, Mary, on census returns. I wonder if this could be due to the fact much time was spent in Canada. I feel the fact they were both buried in Cloford, where the Harding family originate, suggests he must have lived there at some stage.

Any assistance. or advice, is appreciated.
