Hello Mermaid-nl and China,
I haven't quite figured it out completely either and can't blow it up large enough. It does look very familiar to an oil lamp I have here in Germany. (I collect oil lamps) I can't really see the details of the top but the main part is similar to one I have. It is brass and on a stand and the part with the lower horizontal bar (towards the lady) is a moveable - inwards or outwards. The solid piece of brass on this bar is a swivel and you can rotate the upper bar with the lamp into various positions. Actually quite modern. The round object to the left of the vertical bar that looks clear under the 'skirt' is the glass container where the petroleum was held. The only thing differnt to mine is the top part - as there is no glass around the wick. It almost looks like the light coloured 'skirt' under the wick-part might be to stop sparks falling onto the floor. Perhaps they didn't have the glass coverings back then?
Anyways, I may be wrong but that is what it looks like to me.
Karen
