Hello Mermaid-nl and China,

I haven't quite figured it out completely either and can't blow it up large enough.  It does look very familiar to an oil lamp I have here in Germany.  (I collect oil lamps)  I can't really see the details of the top but the main part is similar to one I have.  It is brass and on a stand and the part with the lower horizontal bar (towards the lady) is a moveable - inwards or outwards.  The solid piece of brass on this bar is a swivel and you can rotate the upper bar with the lamp into various positions.  Actually quite modern.  The round object to the left of the vertical bar that looks clear under the 'skirt' is the glass container where the petroleum was held.  The only thing differnt to mine is the top part - as there is no glass around the wick.  It almost looks like the light coloured 'skirt' under the wick-part might be to stop sparks falling onto the floor.  Perhaps they didn't have the glass coverings back then?

Anyways, I may be wrong but that is what it looks like to me.  ;)

Hi China,

This picture has a partner which I assume might be a wife.  Unfortuantely, my 4th cousin who scanned these goofed up on the other one and won't be able to re-scan until after her cottage holiday.  The resolution is really bad (especially the face) but perhaps you can see something regarding her dress? If it was taken around the same time etc.?

Thanks,
Karen

Thanks Viktoria,

If it is who I think it might be I'd put the date around mid 70s +.  If it isn't - who knows :-) ....

Karen.

Here's another from the latest collection which I'd love to have dated.  A guess at his age would also be very helpful  ;) :D

I'll never understand why relatively young men would grow such wild beards  ::) !

For anyone who may be bored  - a cleaning or colouring is also quite welcome.  ;)

Thank you,
Karen

I think it is an oil lamp.

Thanks Pels,

I think so too and although the angles are different the waves in her hair are very similiar.  Not a very common surname either.

I have posted this picture before but would appreciate your opinions if she is the same lady shown when you follow this link?

http://www.mccord-museum.qc.ca/scripts/search_results.php?Lang=1&keywords=de+Uriarte

I am not sure about the copywrite which is why I am just adding the link.

The woman in my picture is Louise Toussaint who married the Spanish Consul Hipolito de Uriarte.  He was the Spanish consul in Montreal for several years.

The woman on the linked website is named Mrs. H. de Uriarte and I think it is the same person.

Your opinions please!  :D ;)

Thanks,
Karen

I found the other McMartins too by searching the site and then started putting in other family names.  I found a Mrs. H. de Uriarte who I also believe is one of mine.  Her husband was Spanish consul in Montreal for a while.

China - I think it was you that found the tragic story of the de Uriartes dying in an apartment fire in New York.  I think it is the same person and am searching for my photo to compare with.  The site is strange to navigate but really cool though.

Maybe I can find more relis  ;) ;).

Wow, I am absolutely flaberghasted OR  ;) :D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D.   - -  I'm speechless  ..  :o :o :o

Great detective work and thanks Prue & Xinia for your input too!

This is really amazing and how I wish I had more unidentified photos from THIS photographer  ;) !!

Now, I wonder who on earth Mrs. McMartin is?  She is certainly not who I was hoping it was and so far I have not come across that surname in the family. ..........   Hmmmmm

Thanks a million old rowley
