Hi everyone who kindly helped with my problems ! Just to let you know on the update. Dawnish suggested to keep looking for info and she was so right ! Another document went on line referring to Horacio Nelson Perry. To my knowledge they were both extended family, brothers and cousins. It gave me little else e sceptical it was to do with a will. I took a risk and ordered £70 of documents which took three months to arrive as an e mail attachment !    The plot thickens ! I referred early on to large amounts of money and land inherited and this document refers to the original will and who inherited. My great great great grandfather took himself off to Jersey with his money leaving the estate in the hands of the executors. The first two died so family were appointed. They plundered the assets! They took the collected rents, sold one of the properties and a piece of land ! They told William who had inherited they would give him some money from the goodness of their heart !  The whole affair is called back to The Canterbury Perogative Court where the new executors have to appear in two weeks with all receipts and paperwork ! That’s where it ends....I await the next released paperwork !      Hope this shows that you must keep searching, going back, looking again and, most importantly, thinking “out of the box” to solve our quest .

Hi Bryce, I’m sorry to say I am not familiar with those names . However ,I can tell you that there were two workhouses in Lacock. One tiny one that looks like a village house and then the GB law was about to change and George Banks a mason and John Gale a carpenter built a large new premises opposite the Lacock village church named St Cyriacs.
At the moment I am in Southern Ireland on another genealogy trail of my mother’s Irish family. I’ll be home in a week or so and look in my records for you.  My late father and aunt started the Banks family research of Lacock around 1946. I have dozens of files that I have inherited.  Dad was a firm believer in negative information being positive because it ruled someone out ! He had a few short articles published in the Wiltshire Recorder which has articles about family history. One of his interests, there were dozens ! , was the workhouse. I know he had info about food and training because I used it with the children I taught.
Dad also has files full of Records about the village. It may well be that your family names may yet be among them. Although Dad was ninety six, he could use a computer but mainly used old fasioned pencil and paper !
A coincidence is your name .   Another part of my Wiltshire family ended up in SAN Francisco where two boys were born. One named Bryce. They returned to the U.K. with their mother around 1870s ( need to check dates ) but sadly ,we think Bryce died as his name disappears from all records.
I’ll do some checking of paper work when I return home. I may yet find something.
Regards Maggie

Thank you KGarrard and CarolW.
I'll check both these.   It's bad enough searching for someone in "her line of work " but with the name Margaret Jones it's even worse. She may have married and I did search a bit on that yesterday but I think I'll have to be very systematic. But then of course she may have changed her name ! Nightmare !   Then of course she may not have been a prostitute but maybe kept an illegitimate child and the family story was whispered incorrectly. Poor woman ! I'll keep going . Thank you.

Cardiganshire / Margaret Jones

Hi, I've been working with a family member on this genealogy for fifteen years. My Aunt has died and left me all the research. We hit a brick wall with Margaret Jones. She was born in Philadelphia in 1877 Her parents were John Rowland Jones and Catherine Jones previously Howells and nee Jones. Margaret was the third of four daughters in this marriage. Her parents came from Aberystwyth and emigrated around 1871. They returned to Dalton London and are in the 1881 census. In the 1891 census she is fourteen and recorded as living at home. By 1901 census all the children have left home. Family information states that a trust fund was set up for Margaret Jones and that my grandfather regularly took her money until she was found dead in an attic room in 1926. My grandfather identified the body. We have been lead to believe she had become a prostitute. They were an extremely religious family and her parents were reasonably well off.  Can any one give me ideas where or how I could continue my search for her ? I have no idea if she married but of course she may have changed her name. I have spent the day searching all the Margaret Jones I could find. Then I began on all the Margarets in the 1901 census who gave the USA as place of birth. I'm not having much success ! Not surprising with such a common name. Just wondered if there is anything I may have missed. Thank you. 🤔

Hi Michael ,
Great to hear from you. Horatio Nelson Perry is one of my ancestors as is Thomas Perry.
I have inherited a huge amount of historical research that began in 1946 by my Aunt who was joined by my father around 1955.  Our direct ancestor is William Perry . Their lives and history are truly amazing. I became involved in supporting their research around twenty years ago and am now trying to correlate the two into one !
How are you linked to the Perrys ?
Look forward to hearing from you. As I now own the research I am willing to share and give you info on links.

Wiltshire / Re: MASLEN Family Tree
« on: Monday 08 May 17 14:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have not seen these postings before and find them very interesting. Some of you will know my tag name from other listings !
I have a Louisa Elizabeth Maslen born about 1821 living in Devizes. In the 1841 census she is working in The Castle Devizes (another family link to the Grace family) by 1846 she has married John Perry of The Pelican and Southbroom Devizes.
My problem, their marriage certificate gives her father's name as George Maslen grocer. She often refers to her place of birth as Covent Garden. I can find her sister Sarah who was adopted aged around nine but can not find her. I have copies of letters written to and from solicitors numbering well over a hundred,I have wills and indentures too but can not find her birth.
I am suspicious ( due to information in the legal papers) that she may have changed her name. Therefore I tried looking for an Elizabeth Maslen with a George as father. There was such a child born about 1820 in a village outside Devizes with George as father and Sarah as mother. Incidentally Louisa Elizabeth's sister was Sarah.  Does any one with Maslen information have these names in their research ? Could the above ramblings ring any bells with anyone ? By coincidence I see that someone is referring to Chandler too. We think that Sarah Grace who ran the Castle in Devizes was a Chandler before she remarried. All ideas welcome !

To all who have read my ramblings over the years ,
I have had another thought....oh no I can hear you say, what's she come up with now !!!!

Well, just a thought , I can not find Louisa Elizabeth Maslen's birth. On census records she gives the place as Covent Garden. On her marriage certificate she gives her father as George. I have searched everywhere I could possibly think of. Then I had a thought ! One of her step daughters changes her name to Louisa also the whole family are under false names on the 1871 census. Her own daughter uses a false name when completing her daughter's ( probably illegitimate ) birth certificate and also lots of odd names appear when she is communicating regularly with the solicitor over a period of about twenty years. My thoughts Louisa Elizabeth Maslen who married John Perry changed her own name ! ?  I tried looking up an Elizabeth Maslen with a father George Maslen and then I got a result. It also shows that the wife of George the possible father was Sarah and Sarah is the name of Louisa's sister too. Now this is divergent thinking, no evidence but the date and place make sense. How could I possibly check church records as I've never actually done that ? Could it possibly be a reason why I can't find her birth ? I know she was in Devizes in the 1841 census as she is listed as working at The Castle Hotel and Sarah Grace who runs it leaves her money in her will a number of years later. Could Louisa Maslen really be Elizabeth Maslen ?

Hi all, it's 2017 and at long last the problem of John William Neate Perry is solved. Have got hold of yet another legal document where he signs a solicitors document to witness signatures but giving his address as Shepton Mallet...matches BDM documents I took a chance on years ago. Also have found a copy of a will where my great grandmother clearly refers to her brother John William Neate Perry. She also refers to her daughter Lilian Clare Perry who I have also researched on Roots Chat. Solved ! Thank you to every one who has helped over the years. Now on to the next bit....where are his off spring ( I know she died childless but did marry ). 😀😀😀😀😀

Hi all, just to say many many thanks for all your help and support. The elderly relative had died and I have inherited boxfuls of genealogy. I still haven't completely resolved the Lilian Perry saga but have had reams of notes and copies of legal documents to transcribe and am finding snippets of info about their strange lives. I don't think the research will ever end because a knew piece has just appeared on The National Archives involving the uncles of Lilian.
I wish to sy a public thank you to all of those who have given me help. The quest continues !
Many ,many thanks to all. Miggs191
