Isle of Man Lookup Requests / Re: James Herbert Tovell (26.3.1918 - 27.8.1997)
« on: Saturday 08 September 12 14:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi - thanks for getting back to me. You have his parents correct (mothers maiden name was Raine).

I've just checked with his sister (my mother in law) and he definitely got married on the Isle of Man. His wife, who was a native of the IOM, had the first name Doreen (maiden name not known). They had a son (Paul) - exact date of birth not known but would have been early 1950's.

They lived at the address given on the driving licence. The other thing I have found out is that James was in the army when he got married (National Service I am assuming) but not known which regiment / unit.

Regards

Paul

Isle of Man Lookup Requests / James Herbert Tovell (26.3.1918 - 27.8.1997)

James was the uncle of my wife. He was born in Gateshead and died in Blackpool. It is known that he lived and married on the Isle of Man. I have a 1952/53 IOM driving licence issued to James Herbert Tovell on 2nd April 1952, showing his address to be 'Jesmond' Jurby Road, Ramsey. The details of his wife are unknown. I would estimate that the marriage would have been in the region 1940 to 1950.

If anyone can help me with details of spouse (the couple later divorced and James moved back to England) and where and when they were married I would be grateful. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to read this message.

Trish

Thank you - best lead I have had re her 'missing years'. Name and occupation suggest it is who I am looking for but year and place of birth not so good. Nevertheless I am, thanks to you, making progress.

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me. I have the details of her parents (Henry Thomas Eagles and Fanny Eagles nee Shearman). They were in England throughout their lives and feature on each Census during their lifespan.

Mary married Harry Hewett in 1904 - the marriage was recorded as Chepstow District but was actually in Woolaston (about six miles the English side of the border).

It is her addresses in Jersey that have proved hard to find and the only clue I have is the one shown on the birth certificate of her son. She had travelled back to Gloucestershire in late 1902/ early 1903 for the birth as the child was born in the house in Woolaston where her parents lived.

It would be interesting to see if the name Hewett crops up on the Parish Records in Jersey as the birth certificate shows 'not known' in respect of the father.

Regards

Paul

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Mary Elizabeth Eagles

Mary Elizabeth Eagles, a grand aunt of mine, was born in Hardwicke, Gloucestershire in 1876. She vanished off the radar by the time of the England Census of 1891. There is also no trace of her in 1901.

In 1903 she gave birth to a son. That birth was at her parents home in Gloucestershire. The birth certificate does not name the father but shows her home address as having been 2 Lansdown Villas, Millbrook, Jersey. Her occupation is shown as domestic nurse.

Her whereabouts after 1903 are known. I wonder if anyone has access to the Parish Records between 1891 and 1902 and are able to identify where she was living etc. I can find no trace of her on the Jersey Census for 1891 or 1901.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to read this message and for any information you may be able to provide.

Kent Lookup Requests / Matthew Hesses (Hesse)
« on: Friday 11 November 11 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
Seeking information regarding the ancestors of Matthew Hesses (possibly spelt as Hesse), who was born in Kent in 1781 - place not known. He married Mary Ann Lee and the couple moved to London. Matthew features on the 1841 Census (aged 60), along with his daughter Caroline, but not any of them after that date so it is assumed that he probably died prior to 1851. The couple had three daughters - Caroline, Eliza and Louisa.

Any information regarding the details of Matthew's ancestors - especially those of his parents would be much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to read this message.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Descendants of John Beard b Stroud circa 1816
« on: Monday 29 August 11 08:52 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about the lives, marriages and deaths etc of the children of the above. John Beard married Ellen Higgs in Gloucester in 1845 (GRO V 11 P 436). Their known children were: -

Sarah Ann Beard (b 1847 d ?) - nothing known of her after 1861 census.

James Beard (b 1849 d 1910) - my great grandfather, who married Jane Turner (children of marriage, his death and burial details are all known to me, as are those of his wife).

Emma R E Beard (b 1854 d ?) - nothing known after 1861 census.

John Beard (b 1857 d ?) - nothing known after 1861 census.

The 1861 Census shows Sarah, James, Emma and John living in Barton St Mary

Any hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to read this message.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Edith Emma Stoner b 1889 - seeking marriage details
« on: Friday 18 March 11 23:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - the marriage between William Tranter and Edith took place in Midhurst in 1913 (2b 311) in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter. I've also managed to enlarge the badge on his army cap and it is correct for the regiment that the deceased soldier was serving in. Thanks for your interest in this thread and all the very best. Kind regards Paul

I believe that I have solved it. A search of Genes Reunited revealed that Edith Stoner married William Charles Tranter in Midhurst, Sussex in 1913. As previously mentioned the man in the photo was an army sergeant. I then traced a WW1 death on 9/3/17 in Flanders - Sergeant William Charles Tranter of Royal Field Artillery. Also traced was the birth of a son, Thomas G Tranter in Midhurst in 1914 - father William Charles Tranter - mother Stoner.

Scenario seems to to be that Edith subsequently married Frank F Harrison (born abt 1877) in Brighton in December 1945 (Brighton 2B 585) and he pre-deceased her when he died in Worthing aged 71 in December 1948. That would explain her having a young child and then, when she died, having the married name of Harrison as per on her grave. It also explains the photo of mother and child with a uniformed army sergeant.

Thanks for the interest and assistance given in helping me solve this.
