Lanarkshire / Re: Mosshouse, New Monkland - where is it?

Hi there,

The family name is LOGAN, but in 1901 they appeared to be in 'Back Row, Righead, Stand'.

Unless of course, it was on her maternal line, in which case the name was CAMPBELL.  I haven't researched them much yet as it is a horrible name to research! (Still psyching myself up for that one!  :o)

Cheers,
Clare

Hi there,

There is no document unfortunately.  I'm doing the research for my other half's maternal grandmother's line - and he remembers that she used to talk about this place when she was alive.  She was born in the 1920s, so I guess we are talking about some point after then.

The family was based around Greengairs and Riggend in the censuses up to 1901 (haven't checked 1911 yet) and I believe she lived in/around Greengairs at the time of her marriage (again not backed up by documentation yet - only family reminiscences).

The other half is interested in knowing more about it as she talked fondly of the place.

Cheers,
Clare

Roxburghshire / Re: Roxburghshire Parish Register - Archibald Douglas & Anna Scott

Hi Stephen

I have the book of transcribed monumental inscriptions for Cavers & Kirkton, which include Cavers Old Churchyard.  While I can't find a specific stone with the names of Archibald Douglas and Anna Scott, it does appear that there is a burial vault for the 'Douglas of Cavers' family.  Unfortunately, I have no idea how or where you would find records of who is buried in that vault - possibly someone at the Borders Family History Society would have the knowledge of where to search - www.bordersfhs.org.uk

Cheers,

Lanarkshire / Mosshouse, New Monkland - where is it?
« on: Wednesday 04 May 11 20:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows where Mosshouse in the parish of New Monkland is actually situated?  I have been digging around in old maps and Googling, but other than finding out what enumeration district it was in in 1881, I haven't come up with anything!

I am guessing based on the family that I am researching that it may have been around the Riggend/Greengairs area, but have nothing to base this on really.

All help gratefully received!  :)

Cheers,
Clare

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help - I finally found his medal card after identifying his regiment via an old photograph.

I'll store away the hints and tips you gave me for the next time I have to search army records.

Thanks again,
Clare

Hi jds1949

I'll give the newspaper thing a go - I'm not too far from where they lived so it should be manageable.

Thanks,
Clare

Hi there,

Unfortunately, they don't have the medals - which is a shame.  So I have struck out on that lead too!

Cheers,
Clare

Thanks for the link jds1949 - I'll have a look there.

Dee - I have tried searching for medal cards but there are literally dozens for this name so I need to know his regiment to know which card is his, so they are pretty much a dead end at the moment.  I've looked at loads on Ancestry and none of them so far have any information on them that would help me work out if they are the correct one or not  :(

Cheers,
Clare

World War One / Help required finding army records - COMPLETE
« on: Tuesday 04 January 11 20:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I've never had cause to search for army records before as not many of my family fought in the wars - but I am now doing some research for a friend whose ancestor was fighting in France during WWI, and he'd like to know where his ancestor was.

Now, I have his name and date of birth and most genealogical information for him, but I don't know his regiment.  Is there a way to narrow down the regiment he may have been in by where he lived as I believe that certain regiments recruited in specific areas?  He may also have been in the Territorial Army before 1914.

All help is very gratefully received in this as I really am not sure where to start.  I have started looking information on Ancestry and the National Archives (Documents online) but I am looking for a really common name so need to narrow it down.

Thanks,
Clare
