The Stay Safe Board / Re: DIARY: Christmas Day to New Year’s Eve.

I love Pontefract Cakes, too!  For those who don't know, Pontefract is actually a town in Yorkshire, and its name means "broken bridge" in Latin.  The old name was locally known as "Pomfret", which is how the "cakes" are called by us Pomfret Cake lovers.  Warning - if you don't like liquorice you won't like these!

Some of the locals now affectionately call it 'Pontecarlo' to go with nearby Castleford, also known as 'Cas Vegas".  :D

DNA has been the only way I've been able to do it, as this was a situation of an illegitimate birth. Hopefully one day you'll have that success too.

Thanks to DNA I broke a wall that I've had for over a decade. My 2nd Great Grandfather is no longer missing.

Hoping to do the same to track down another 2nd Great Grandfather.

The Common Room / Re: Apprenticing to your own father?

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I'm sure I've read that for a time at least, it wasn't allowed to be apprenticed to your own father.

Maybe that was only within particular gilds though?

I agree with BumbleB that the attitude people had to an out of wedlock pregnancy seems to be quite regional. The attitude to the sanctity of marriage seems to be quite variable too.

I've read a couple of memoirs by former domestic servants, going back to the late Victorian era. One woman went to visit her mother, only to find that her father had abandoned the family and shacked up with another women. Her mother remarked that this was a fairly common occurrence and didn't seem to be that big of a deal. She also didn't seem particularly shocked or worried by servants getting pregnant.

Another woman, who I believe was from Wales, commented that her family would have disowned her if she shacked up with a man or got pregnant, so she was terrified of it.

In my own family tree, there are several women who got pregnant out of wedlock and never married the father. The whole family just seemed to get on with it.

That would be my interpretation.

I think that's why they are mentioning that they also receive parish aid. Maybe because there was some effort to get money from the father. That was quite common I believe.

Technical Help / Re: Sending messages through Gmail

It did occur to me that maybe, for some reason, your account has been marked as a spam account and you are being sent into people's spam folders.

This article explains some of the stuff behind that. I'm afraid it's not something I understand much about.

The other thing I would possibly consider, is getting rid of any email signatures or images that you might be sending with your emails. Sometimes they don't like that.

Who are you sending the emails to? Is it just one person, or is this happening with lots of different accounts?

If it's just one person, have they accidentally blocked you?
