Fermanagh / Look-up for Three Naughty Girls and Their Family
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 06:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I would like to request some assistance in finding family information for three naughty girls – Mary (my GG Grandmother), Margaret and Catherine TAYLOR.

Let me explain:

On 13 July 1849 in Fermanagh, Prosecutor Carlton tried the three sisters for burglary and robbery of muslin; they were each sentenced to 10 years in Australia.  They were sent to Grangegorman to await sentencing and left for Australia on 8 July 1850 on the "Duke of Cornwall".

Unfortunately, during that period in Grangegorman, on 18 December 1849 Catherine died.

BUT
On Mary and Margaret’s convict records* it states “Catherine in America”.  Ughhh!

Father:  James Taylor
Mother:  Catherine
Brothers:  James and John

I would like to learn the dates of birth and location for the parents, James and Catherine, and their two sons James and John.  I would also like to learn how to find the information and hope someone will be able to teach me.

Thank you.

« on: Saturday 16 August 14 03:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Would someone be able to assist me with a look-up for Mary (my GG Grandmother) and her family:

Mary Hayes  (middle name might be Ann)
b.   abt. 1829 - Fermoy, Co. Cork
m.  17 July 1852 - St Anne’s Shandon, United Church of England and Ireland, City of Cork*
d.   16 August 1898 - Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia  (69 years)

*  Mary married William Munday - b. May 1818, Hull, England
He was in the military, stationed in Co. Cork.
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~garter1/william%20Munday.htm

Mary's parents are:
James Hayes - he is listed as a farmer on Mary's Marriage Certificate
and
? Leslie

Before Mary got married she was living in Barracton.  Would that have been in Fermoy or Cork?

I would love to find out about Mary's siblings and her parents; and I'm hoping you can help me.

Thanks you.

Ireland / Look-up where Counties Limerick, Cork and Tipperary Meet Please
« on: Friday 15 August 14 22:09 BST (UK)  »

I was wondering if someone could do a look-up for me in the Kilbehenny area where Counties Limerick, Cork and Tipperary meet for John FITZGERALD and Margaret FITZGERALD - a brother and sister.

My GG Grandmother is:

Mary FITZGERALD  (she married William Goodall on 21 October 1953 in Brighton, Victoria, Australia)
b.  abt. 1837  -  Limerick
d.  bet. 4-11 June, 1915  -  Lilydale, Victoria, Australia  (78)

I believe Mary FITZGERALD arrived in Melbourne, Australia, on 18 May 1953 on the “Bride”.

On Mary’s Marriage Certificate it says she was born in Limerick.
On the Birth Certificate for the first 2 out of 12 children it says she was born in Cork.
In her Obituary it says she was from Tipperary.

Mary FITZGERALD’s parents are:

John FITZGERALD  and  Mary O'BRIEN
(I got that information from Mary FITZGERALD’s Marriage Certificate, see attached)

I’ve been looking for something else to give validity to my search and I think I've got it!!!   :o

I was given the suggestion to research the witnesses on Mary FITZGERALD’s Marriage Certificate.  Those two witnesses are in red below.

Patrick CAHILL
b.  abt. 1803
married
Margaret FITZGERALD
b.  abt. 1814

Children:

Thomas CAHILL
b.  abt. 1833

Mary CAHILL
b.  abt. 1835

Garrett CAHILL
b.  abt. 1836

Catherine CAHILL

b.  abt. 1837

Margaret Cahill
b.  abt. 1839

There is an unsourced tree on ancestry.com which states Patrick and Margaret, and their children, came from Kilglass, Kilbehenny, Co. Limerick.  Which just happens to border the three counties that Mary FITZGERALD’s records say she was born!!  Woo hoo - am I getting close?

So, in conclusion, I am hoping someone will look up a birth for John FITZGERALD and Margaret FITZGERALD in the Kilbehenny area of Co. Limerick or around the area where Counties Limerick, Cork and Tipperary meet to prove that they are brother and sister - my fingers are crossed!!

Thank you.

Ireland / What County Should I Post In?
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 07:40 BST (UK)  »

Hello!

I would like to post a request regarding Kilbehenny, Co. Limerick.  Kilbenenny is situated on the Co. Cork border and is within two kilometers of the Co. Tipperary border.

What county should I post my request?  Perhaps the family went to church in Co. Cork but were buried in Co. Tipperary but newspaper notices were in Co. Limerick!!

All three counties are in Munster Province but I don't see a group for that.

Thank you!

Hi Judith,

Thank you so much for following up with me - this is getting exciting!!  I must admit I've only been doing genealogy for about two years so I'm still learning.  I can see the addictive qualities in this hobby and I'm very willing to learn from others so, thank you!!

I had a quick look at the Limerick Roots Chat page and, before I was to begin the post I looked for a "Link to" button to reference the information on the Australian site but I wasn't able to find one.  Would you be able to tell me how to do that?

You mentioned an "on-line tree", do you mean on ancestry.com?  If so, I could go to the library tomorrow and look on-line (I don't have an ancestry subscription).  When I am there, I'll see if I can find a Victorian database for 1853.  Mary said she was living in Brighton, Victoria, before she married; I'll check if the Cahills were living in that suburb too.

Yes, there two obituaries for Mary Goodall online via Trove.  The first obituary is from "Leader, Melbourne, Victoria - Saturday, 12 June 1915, Page 56", the second obituary is from "The Lilydale Express, Victoria - Friday, 11 June 1915, Page 4" and it is repeated (exactly) in the "Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle, Victoria - Friday, 11 June 1915, Page 4".  Here are the two links

Best regards.

To:  Sue, Debra, Judith, JM and Heywood,

Thank you all for your responses and your great suggestions, you have given me some great directions to follow.  It didn't cross my mind to research the witnesses at the wedding as a possible lead.  Even though I knew the details from the wedding certificate I still attached it as back-up material - I am so pleased I did.  It just shows not to discount any details that you might think as unimportant.
