My daughter and I actually walked on Tobago Street in 2003.  No. 42 Tobago, seems, now to be a Charity Bldg.

It was a sentimental journey that took us to Glasgow.  My Mother, Isabella ALEXANDER DOUGAN PEARSON, had passed away at age 94, and we took a portion of her ashes back to Glasgow.  We hoped to scatter them on the ALEXANDER Lair, where her father was buried.

We also walked on McNeil Street -- 64 McNeil St -- where members of the DOUGAN family had lived from 1913 to 1952.  Mom was born on Waddell ST.

There is a certain fascination, for us, with the areas and streets that our ancestors lived.  We try to imagine what life must have been for them.

Thank you for sharing the info about the  picture with us.

Dear Falkryn,

Thank you so much for the map showing Calder.

The 1861 Calton Census shows as place of birth for Wm. ALEXANDER, Jr., possibly "Red Row" or "Red Bank" Calder Parish, Lanarkshire.  In subsequent Census' - Calder Parish, Lanarkshire is given.  He then lived at 52 Tobago St.

A Google search produced one Calder to the South of Glasgow, near or in Old Monksland.  The other Calder is in Midlothian (E. Calder, W. Caldor and Mid-Calder.

We have been unable to find the OPR records for any of the ALEXANDERlexander siblings, even Isabella ALEXANDER, who was born about 1844, possibly in Calton.

We have found the marriage record when Isabella ALEXANDER married David DOUGAN in 1863 - Glasgow High Church.  She was 19 years of age, David DOUGAN was 26 (he was born in Northern Ireland near Belfast).  He was a carpet pattern weaver.  Most of the ALEXANDER's seemed to be weavers, or worked in related jobs.

William ALEXANDER, JR. later lived with his family at 546 Gallowgate.  Isabella and David DOUGAN later lived at 42 Tobago St., where they owned a grocers store.  David DOUGAN died in 1871, 4 days before my grandfather, David DOUGAN was born.  We have found a copy of D. DOUGAN's will, but we still do not know where in Northern Ireland he was born.

We also cannot find the information regarding the elder Wm. ALEXANDER's death.  He died between 1841 and 1851, as indicated by the Census information you sent us.    It would appear that he and his wife, Ann PROVAN ALEXANDER lived on McKechnie St., in Glasgow.  She lived there until her death in the late 1880's.

We visited the Southern Necropolis when we were in Glasgow in 2003.  Wm Alexander, Jr. had purchased a lair there.  Unfortunately, the large monument had been vandalized and there is currently nothing marking the grave.

Sorry to have gone on for so long, but there is a glimmer of hope now that we have an idea where Calder, Lanarkshire is located.

Thank you for all of your wonderful help.

Dear Liz,

Thank you for the quick reply.  Do you have any idea what the significance of  "Red Row" might be?

As soon as we finish this post, we are going to do a "Google Search" to try to come up with the answer.

Best wishes,

Dear Falkyrn,

You are terrific.  You have done more to advance our research on the ALEXANDER's in one post, than we have gathered in the past three years.  Thank you very much.

We now know the names of all of the siblings of Isabella ALEXANDER (for whom my mother was named).  Also it narrows down the time frame, in which Isabella's father, William ALEXANDER, died (between 1841 and 1851).  We have done much research using Scotland's People, but have not been able to find an OPR Record of his death.

We found, in the 1861 Census, his son, William ALEXANDER, living on Tobago Street, Calton.  His place of birth is listed, but we are unable to decipher the hand writing which gives the full name of the Parish in Lanarkshire where he was born.  In subsequent census' it shows Calder, but we cannot find this Parish in Lanarkshire.  There is such a place in Midlothian, but cannot find his birth record there, using primarily Scotland's People and the LDS Records.

Chances are that many of the children of William ALEXANDER and Ann PROVAN ALEXANDER were born in that mystery Parish.  William and Ann ALEXANDER were married in CADDER, Lanarkshire in 1823.

Words are inadequate to express our deep apprecation to you.  Best Wishes, Jean (Bonnie Lassie) in Florida

Searching for family of William Alexander in 1851 Glasgow Census.

Found the family in the 1861 Glasgow Census, living on McKechnie Street.  William Alexander was deceased.  His widow, Ann Alexander is listed as head of family.  Listed in the household are Robert, Alexander, James Alexander and Isabella Alexander (age 17).

We have been trying to find the Date of Death for William Alexander, without success.  Also cannot find the DOB for Isabella Alexander (my great, grandmother), probably born in 1844.  Also would like to find William Alexander, Jr. born about 1827 in Calder??  We know he lived in Gallowgate/Calton in 1881.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Dear Irret,

Thank you for all of your effort on our behalf.  Sunday was a particularly rainy day here in FL, so we spent much time at the computer.  Accessed Scotland's People and finally found the birth record for the lst ROBERT NORVAL CUNNINGHAM --

He was born on June 10, 1886 in the District of Plantation (Govan?) in Lanark.  One of his sister's Williamina CUNNINGHAM was also born in Plantation (Govan??) on December 18, 1884.  We still do not know if Robert N. ever married.  The document shows PLANTATION as the district, but under the address area shows GOVAN.

We were also successful in tracing back to Robert's grandfather,  Hugh CUNNINGHAM, who was born in 1799 in Ardchattan, Argyll.  HUGH CUNNINGHAM'S parents were Dugald CUNNINGHAM (born June 8, 1759) and Catharine MACCOLL (born June 27, 1765).  We do not know when they were married.

DUGALD CUNNINGHAM's parents were Donald CUNNINGHAM and Mary MCINTYRE.  Catherine MACCOLL'S parents were Duncan MACCOLL and Christian MACKENZIE.  Have not found any dates on either set of parents.

We are presently trying to find earlier limbs on the CUNNINGHAM Tree in Argyll.

We want you to know how much we appreciate your help.
Best wishes - Bonnie Lassie

Have been searching both LDS and Scotland's People.  Have not been able to find birth record of Robert Norval CUNNINGHAM -- we believe he was born abt 1886/Govan Church, Lanark.

His parents - Hugh CUNNINGHAM and Mary MCBEAN.

Robert was killed in WWI in 1917 - at the age 31.  Any suggestions as to how we would find this birth record would be greatly appreciated -- do not know if he ever married.

Thank you -  Bonnie Lassie on Florida's Spacecoast

Down / DOUGAN, John and Agnes
« on: Sunday 25 September 05 02:26 BST (UK)  »
Looking for parents of my ggf, David DOUGAN.  He was born about 1837 "near Belfast"  His parents were John DOUGAN/DOOGAN and Agnes Moffat.  John DOUGAN was a Farmer/Laborer

We have found a John DOOGAN who married a Nancy MOFFAT in Ballyroney, Down, Ireland in 1820. (This record was takens from the OPR of the Presbyterrian Church).  This DOUGAN/DOOGAN Family had several children, one named David.

David DOUGAN is listed the 1861 Glasgow Census.  He was at that time a carpet weaver, born in Ireland.  He married Isabella ALEXANDER in Glasgow in 1863.  David DOUGAN died in 1871 in Calton District Glasgow.  He was had a grocer's store in Calton.  His son, my gf, also named David DOUGAN, was born 4 days after his father's death.  It is said that relatives from Northern Ireland attended the funeral, dressed in tall black hats and mourning coats.  David DOUGAN's death certificate indicate that his parents were still alive in 1871.

We have reached a huge brick wall, and cannot find a way to determine if the David DOUGAN from Ballyroney, is actually our relative.  Any help would be appreciated.
