Radnorshire Lookup Requests / Evan Morris
« on: Sunday 11 July 21 00:08 BST (UK)  »
I believe my ancestor Evan Morris was born somewhere in Radnorshire in 1779 or 1780 but I have no idea where. Any suggestions of which parish in Radnorshire might have a baptism record for him?

I am trying to see the baptism page for Trostre(y) for 1745 - according to FreeReg, there is a Richard Jones baptised at Trostre on 6th October 1745 with  parents John and Mary - but when I look at the Trostre registers on Find my Past there appear to be no records for that decade.  Any ideas??  Any other original source?

Thanks

You can try contacting me through Ancestry - although I don't know how effective that is.

My Great Great grandfather was John Davies (1834 - 1883).  He moved from Blaenresgair farm, Llansawel to Merthyr in 1851 and was landlord of the Crown Inn Merthyr from 1856 until his death in 1883.
His father was John Davies (1809-1891) - a Llansawel farmer - who had 8 children - David, John, Mary Jane Elizabeth James Margaret and Daniel. Of those, as well as John, I know that David and Elizabeth also lived in Merthyr. e.g. Elizabeth first married a David Williams, and then remarried John Price Lewis one of the printers in Merthyr.
John Davies (1809- 1891) was the eldest child of James David (about 1780 - 1867);  James other children were David, Jane, Daniel, James, Ann and Mary.  James senior was a deacon of Bethel chapel in LLansawel and is buried in the graveyard there; he died at Ffosgotta on 1/3/1867.
James David's origins are a bit unclear / from the age on his death certificate, he would be born in 1780 - the most likely relevant trace I can find is a baptism record in 1783 that names the  father of James David as Lewis David.
I have checked the Bishops transcripts at Aberystwyth as well as the Llansawel parish register (which starts 1751) but cannot clarify it further.
The same Christian names keep coming up in each generation which makes it quite difficult to track things.

Monmouthshire / Evan Morris: 21/09/1860 - 23/01/1940 GWR employment records
« on: Monday 25 January 21 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
All 4 of my great grandfathers were employed by the Great Western Railway.  I have easily found the GWR employment details of 3 of them , but can't find details of the 4th.  He lived in the Goytre area and was some sort of "platelayer" for the railway for very many years.  He described himself in 1886 as a "Packer on the line".  In the 1911 census he described himself as a "Railway Platelayer Ganger".
The GWR records I have seen on Ancestry seem mainly for operating staff or engineering staff , rather than "Track maintenance staff".  Any help with where I might source  details of his railway employment would be appreciated.

Sorry.  I have looked but haven't found any proof (one way or the other) to add to what I have already mentioned to you about my thoughts on Henry Clements.

Armed Forces / Battle of Bunker Hill 1775

I believe an ancestor Thomas John (born 1754)  was a British soldier in the Battle of Bunker Hill near Boston, Massachusetts in 1775.
I don't know where he was born but I suspect it was in South Wales.
Where would be the best sources to look, to try and find out if he were indeed a British soldier at that time, and in that battle.

 :)Thank you very much.
I hadn't seen the St Tydfils' burial details nor the newspaper details of the change of licence.  My ancestors were licensees of various Merthyr pubs - I knew that Richard Jones was at the Rising sun in the 1840s but didnt know the date of change of licence.

I am trying to find out more details of Thomas Jones who died in 1828. His will is on the National library of Wales website and he was proprietor of the White Horse inn at that time. I do already know some details of his son Richard Jones who died in 1872 but know nothing about Thomas.
