Lancashire / Fleetwood - did your relative serve in WW2?
« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 12:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I recently purchased a group of portrait photos of men who served in the Second World War. They seem to have been collected for an exhibition at some point, as they all have labels with their names.

All the men seem to be from the Fleetwood area, and have worked for the same company or organisation. There are photos of men in the Army, RAF, Royal Navy and Merchant Navy.

One of the photos indicates that it should be returned to the owner, but sadly this was not done. So I am hoping that family members may come forward and claim these photos now.

If you are from the Fleetwood/Lancashire area and recognise any of the following names, and think this might be a photo of them - please get in touch via a private message.

Family names are:

Barrowclough
Colley
Coulthurst
Craven
Dickinson
Dickson
Fielding
Hardern (Harden?)
Hetherington
Hudson
Leadbetter
Ligo
Moon
Parkinson
Paley
Robson
Snape
Spivey
Stansfield
Swarbrick
Thompson
Ward
Whiteside

I know it is a long shot, but I hope that I may be able to reunite some of these photos with the families of the men.

Hi

If he was captured at Singapore, he may have been held at Changi initially, prior to being shipped by train to Thailand.

Hi

The National Archives have reports on 52 Working Camp, Nether Headon Camp, East Retford, Nottinghamshire -
FO 939/301
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C1367120
and
FO 939/134
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C1366953

These will contain information on the structure of the camp, leaders, re-education activities, etc.

Hi

Pioneer Corps would make sense if he was CO of a POW / internment camp. The Pioneer Corps guarded many of the mid-low level security camps.

Hi

Was he the CO of a POW Camp in the UK, or was he imprisoned in one overseas?
The obituary implies the former, I think?

If that was the case, the National Archives do contain reports on many (but not all) of the POW Camps in the UK, and these do refer to the Commanding Officers, but this information is not searchable, and it would involve reviewing individual files. The other option is to contact the regimental archives who may have some more information.

Hi

A few more details on these men:

Joachim Haase was a POW at Camp 13, which was at Shap Wells Hotel. He died in an ambulance near Penrith from the effects of a stroke.

Egon Voigtmann drowned due to accidental drowning in the River Esk, near Kirkandrews. He was a POW, but it is likely he was working on a farm in the area, hence his 'rank' in German records as a labourer. The POW camp he was attached to was Camp 692, Hornick Hill, Longtown.

These details are from the book 'German War Graves in the North East and Cumbria' by Peter Connor.

Hi

Thanks for your message. I've recently been able to find the information - kindly located in the paper you mention by a local historian (Westmoreland Gazette was my error).

Yes, it was Brougham that I had been in contact with.
