Canada / Re: What happened to Mark Wyse for 28 years?

Also unusual is how late he married Anne. He was 47, an unusual age for a first marriage at that time. They had several children.

Where did you get his age at marriage? The marriage registration says he was 37 years old, not 47.

Jacquie

Got age 47 from his baptism in 1851. I know this is his baptism because the parents’ names match on his death certificate and because he is named is his father’s will (as Michael but signed as Mark). So I assume he lied about his age to close the big age gap between himself and his new bride.

Canada / What happened to Mark Wyse for 28 years?
« on: Wednesday 30 October 19 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
Mark Wyse was born as Michael Wyse to Irish-born parents Andrew and Jane Nickle Wyse in Buffalo, NY in Nov. 1851. His father was Catholic and his mother was Protestant but they married in a Catholic Church and Michael was baptised a Catholic.

By 1861, the family moved to Eramosa, ON, Canada. In 1870, they had moved to Sleeping Bear, Michigan. And the Michael/Mark disappears.

When he reappears, it’s 1898 and he is marrying Anne Hatt in Lions Head (Eastnor), Ontario and he how goes by Mark. He also seems to be Protestant now, as he marries in a Protestant ceremony and lists himself as Church of England in future records. He says he is a Bachelor and a mason.

He stays in the Lions Head area and appears in 1901, 1911, and 1921 census before dying there in 1928.

So where did he go for 28 years? Why did he change his name? Worth mentioning is that his entire family stayed in Michigan. He may have left for work, but I cannot find him in any census records in either Canada or the States.

Also unusual is how late he married Anne. He was 47, an unusual age for a first marriage at that time. They had several children.

Any help on where he might have disappeared to is much appreciated!

Lanarkshire / William Scott, Pettinain
« on: Friday 21 June 19 01:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more about parents and siblings of William Scott. His death certificate on 1 Apr 1859 gives his parents' names as William Scott and Agnes Turner and puts his birth year at about 1789. Census records seem to give his place of birth as Pettinain, Lanark.

William marries in Lanark, Lanarkshire in 1821 to Marion Ballantyne daughter of the late William Ballantyne, Miller of Eddleston near Peebles (not sure how they would have met...maybe she worked as a maid in Lanark although no occupation given on the marriage record).

William later lived in Lesmahagow (by 1841), where he died.

I can't seem to find records of a William Scott/Agnes Turner marrying or having children in Pettinain.

My family has passed along a long-standing rumour, as probably a lot of Scott families have, that there was some connection to Sir Walter Scott...given names, occupations (labourer!), and location I highly doubt this and would like to disprove it once and for all so I don't need to keep hearing it!  ;)

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Denbighshire / Jane Roberts of Llanelidan
« on: Friday 26 April 19 15:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I’m stuck on my ancestor Jane Roberts. On FindMyPast, I found her Banns with William Edwards on 1 June 1807. William was of the parish of Llangollen and I’ve been able to trace his line a good distance. But Jane says she is of this parish (Llanelidan). And I know little about her. Witnesses to Banns were Margaret Davies and David Wynne. The couple then went to live in Trevor Uchaf in Llangollen.

Jane says she is age 50 and born in Denbighshire in the 1841 Llangollen census. She then dies between 1841-1851 (need to find the burial record). Jane and William had 10 children, last being born in 1831, all born in Llangollen. Their names in order: Mary, William, Ann, Eliza, Edward, Richard, Sarah, Harriet, another Edward and another Ann.

Any help finding Jane’s baptism and/or family would be very much appreciated. Only my father’s paternal line (Ellis) is Welsh so I am not as familiar as their records as I should be!

Canada / Re: Finding James McGuire late 1800s

A couple of trees have him born in Goderich, On but I reached out and they don’t know where they got that info.

There is a death registration for Margaret Jane Glahn, born 1866, daughter of James McGuire and Willa Lena McGregor which gives the birth place of James as Goderich.

Ah, thank you! That’s very helpful as it hints at where James’s family may have first settled in Canada. Perhaps he was an infant when he came to Goderich from Ireland, leading his daughter to think he was born there.

Darn. Too bad.

It's good to know the children's names. Might help find them. I was having a bit of trouble finding the family in 1871 and 1881 Kinloss for some reason. Must try again.

PB

It certainly doesn't help that James's wife went by everything from Wilhelmina Jane, to Jane, to Janet! And that Maguire was spelled McGuire, Maguire, etc as well depending on the record keeper.

Is this the family in 1891?

Unfortunately, I don’t think so...their children were: Elizabeth Jane Margaret (1866), John James, Mary Augustine, Joseph Henry, and Robert Edward (1880)

Canada / Finding James McGuire late 1800s

Hi all,

I’m stuck on James Maguire/McGuire. He was born about 1844-1847 in Ireland. He was Wesleyan Methodist (except for one census where he’s described as Presbyterian). I first found him marrying Jane/Janet McGregor in 1862 in Brant in a Methodist ceremony.

He first appears in the 1871 census with his family in Kinloss, Ont. In 1881 he is in Kinloss again and then disappears in 1891. I relocated him in 1901 in Eastnor (Aka Lions Head) and he died in 1907.

On his marriage record, his parents are John and Jane. I cannot find him in 1851 or 1861, 1891 and complicating matters is that there were multiple James Maguires in the area. Helpfully, at least, my James was Protestant making him slightly easier to identify.

A couple of trees have him born in Goderich, On but I reached out and they don’t know where they got that info. I also can only find James’s FindaGrave record, not his burial or death record.

Any help is gratefully received in sorting this out!

Lanarkshire / Re: Missing Emily/Amelia Stuart in Lanark
« on: Friday 15 February 19 22:04 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor was baptized as Emily Stuart on 18 May 1794 in Douglas, Lanarkshire, to Duncan Stewart and Isabel Neilson. I am fairly certain this is her as no other girls with that name were baptized in the same time period/area.
That is not a safe assumption. Many baptisms were simply not recorded, or, if they were, the records have not survived.

Emily/Amelia is a fairly uncommon name in Scotland, so it is quite likely that the one you have identified is your ancestress, but you have to keep a niggle of doubt in your mind until you find some evidence to confirm that it is indeed she.

Where did you get the idea that Emily is an anglicisation of Amelia? See http://www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=emily

I wouldn’t normally make this assumption, but as you said Emily/Amelia is fairly uncommon in Scotland. Amelia/Emily also had a son named Duncan her first daughter was named Isabel so this parentage would make sense if they followed Scottish naming patterns.

I only assumed Emily was Emilia/Amelia because my ancestor was married as Emily, then in her children’s baptism records she is Emilia, and in 1841 census as Amelia. So it seemed her name changed depending on who was recording it. Some of her grandchildren were named Amelia and some Emily apparently after her.
