Fascinating indeed!
And, thanks to you both, I think I'm getting closer. I found that there is a fabulous listed house in Mycenae Road called "Woodlands", but wondered if it would be the same one as "The Woodlands" from the 1881 census. I started searching for the places you both came up with and Coombe Farm Lane hit the jackpot - a document all about the Westcombe Park Conservation area.
http://www.greenwich.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/419D961C-FD3D-4078-B0BD-455A8660469F/0/WPCAD02AppraisalA.pdfIn there it clearly states that William Bristow, solicitor, lived at Woodlands between 1879 and 1894. So that is the neighbouring house and is easy to find on Google maps.
However, not all done and dusted as apparently there was a property recession (!) in the 1880s and not many "gentlemen's residences" were sold near Woodlands. So I have no idea if the current neighbouring house to Woodlands is my one, or if it was a good distance away and umpteen others since then have filled the gaps... Maps next, I think.
I like the idea of the census taker nipping in for a cuppa, Linda, and thanks for the tip about referencing census records - noted for the future.
So grateful
Jo
