Devon / Re: Joel or Joseph Rowland?

Just to state the obvious, if he appears consistently as Joel on every document except the 1841 census, then his listing as Joseph in the 1841 census might well be a mistake or mistranscription by the enumerator.

This would make the most sense yes. The only possible thing aside from the 1841 is the GRO death record in 1862, which is for Joseph.

Ah brilliant. Thank you Colin. Where did you find that one?

Yes that's a good point. I think I must have pieced that together from the censuses for Joel/Joseph and his later children but I don't have an actual death record for her. I seem to have 1817 on ancestry but I can't back that up and it must have come from someone else's tree when I was less experienced

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I have Joseph down as marrying Elizabeth Harding in 1825 as above and him marrying Elizabeth Rowland (b. 1772) in 1801.

I haven't got him down in the Chard census, I have him in Luppitt with family:

Joel Rowland   81
Elizabeth Rowland   51
Anna Rowland   12
Louisa Rowland   9
Jane Rowland   4
Francis Rowland   1

Best wishes

Devon / Joel or Joseph Rowland?
« on: Sunday 24 September 23 15:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm having trouble working out whether my ancestor was born to a Joel or Joseph Rowland in Upottery in 1810. The Baptism is 22 Apr 1810 to Joel and Elizabeth Rowland. Joel lists himself as such everywhere apart from in the 1841 census, where he is named as Joseph. In the 1851/61 censuses he states his DoB as 1769. There is a Joseph Rowland baptised to James and Mary in Upottery on this date, but also to the same couple in 1778. There is a death on GRO for Joseph Rowland in Honiton 1862 which seems to match, which lists him as 100 - and there is a Joel Rowland born in Upottery in 1763!

Anyway, I'm just a bit confused and more so because I have two DNA matches who trace themselves back to Joseph (1769/78's) parents. One I'm not so sure of but the other seems to check out (through James Rowland 1761 through to Francis Rowland 1881), which adds to my confusion!

Any help appreciated. I'm aware there's also a Joseph Rowland born to Abel and Eleanor in 1811, which I hope I've ruled out through DNA.

Many thanks

Ireland / Re: Dubois family help - late 17/18thC

Thank you. Something else that interests me is his rapid promotion to Sergeant - he was promoted to Corporal at the start of 1800 and Sergeant by Apr 1800. Makes me think he must have distinguished himself in battle at some point?

Thank you both.

If I understand some of the posts on the linked, previous thread correctly, then some military records survive for Francis? What exactly are those?
Do they include a location for where he enlisted?
Any trace of him in pension records, or in one of the records of the Royal Hospitals?

Why do you say Susanna, his wife was Irish? In the previous thread, it was stated that their marriage record noted that she was "of this parish" where they were married, which was somewhere in England?

There is only one military record I have found. It does not say where he enlisted only when.

UK, Regimental Registers of Service, 1756-1900
Enlisted: 10 Sep 1799

She was living in York when she married, but on the 1841 England Census (almost certainly her) she is listed as living alongside the family of John Freeman and having been born in Ireland.

Ireland / Dubois family help - late 17/18thC
« on: Thursday 24 August 23 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Following on from this thread, I am trying to discover more about the Dubois family, who I believe possibly lived in Ireland during the late 1700s and earlier.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=875841.0

As stated in the thread, Francis was a Sergeant in the 18th Light Dragoons, who I believe were raised in Ireland and frequently garrisoned there. At least one of his children (Mary Ann 1808) was born in the country and he married an Irish woman (Susanna Sheridan).

I'm a complete novice regarding Irish genealogy and would be thankful for any resources or information which could help me with this family and indeed the Sheridan family. Obviously the French surname also intrigues me and I can't be sure when Francis's family emigrated to Ireland or if he was French himself.

Best wishes
Samuel

London and Middlesex / Re: Francis/Claude Francis Dubois 1750/60s

Hello
A bit confused but here's what I can see for Claude Francis Dubois

Claude Francis Dubois baptised Chelsea 22nd Aug 1761 s of Claude Francis Dubois and Elizabeth

parents had married at Chelsea 29 Sep 1759
Claude Francis Dubois and Elizabeth Blaxland of Wandsworth by licence
wit Jno Blandford and William Dubois

But that obviously doesn't fit with the Francis age 27 who married in 1800 to Susan Sheridan age 18
There is an entry on Ancestry for the 18th Dragoon Guards
Francis Dubois 27 5ft 9 i/2 joined 10 Sept 1799 Corporal 8 Jan 1800 Serg 29th  April 1800 Reduced Nov 1805.

Thank you. Yes I think Claude Francis is out. Which is good as I never really bought it. I'm not that familiar with military history. Is going from new recruit to Sergeant in six months quite rare? And does reduced essentially mean "demoted"?
