Caernarvonshire / Evan Evans...looking for a few of them.
« on: Wednesday 23 May 18 03:30 BST (UK)  »
Lots of Evan Evans in my family.  Looking for information on three of them.

The youngest Evan, is my GG Grandfather.  Lived in Gerlan, near Bethesda, until 1904 - when he moved to Mountain Ash in South Wales.  We believe that he worked at Penhryn Quarry until the strike.  Cannot figure out where he is buried...Mountain Ash, or was he laid to rest near Gerlan.  Do not have a death date for him, but know that he was born around 1874 in Llanllechid.  Have record of his baptism at Glanogwen Church confirming that.

Evan's older brother Evan, is the second one I am looking for information on.  He was born 1860, in Llanidan Anglesey.  He passed away before the 1881 census (likely before his brother Evan was born in 1874, so we think he died at around age 13) and I have no other information about him, other than he had moved with the family to Gerlan.  Would like to know what happened to him and where he is buried.

Their father Evan Griffith Evans (not a very creative family ;) ) was born in 1835 in Malldraeth, Anglesey.  He moved to Gerlan before the 1881 census, and lived there at 16 Goronwy St. (His older son Evan had passed away by then, and the younger son Evan (my GG Grandfather) was 7).  He passed away in November of 1904 in Gerlan, and I have his death notice, but cannot figure out where he was buried.  Notice even stated that he was a church going man, and a member of the Conservative Party.

Essentially would like to know where my Evan Evans' were buried, and any other information that can be found on them.  Thank you in advance for any help!  My sister and I are traveling to Gerlan (from the US) in less than a month, so we would love to be able to check out some of these places.

Well that is interesting.  Curious that she wasn’t mentioned in her husbands death notice and possibly lived apart from him, who knows.  Will have to do more checking at Glanogwen when we go.  Thank you very much!

Thank you everyone!  I believe that the Evan and Mary that you have all found is very likely him.  Birth years seem to be accurate within a couple of years, and all of the other details match the little bit that we know, including the specific addresses throughout the census records.

I believe around 1904 (when it appears he passed away), his oldest son - also Evan G. Evans (my GG Grandfather) moved south to Mountain Ash, possibly due to the strike at the slate quarry, but now it appears that it may also have happened after his father passed away.

I was able to roughly translate the death notice that was sent along, and now I will work to figure out his burial location (if one can be found).  Thank you all so very much for your help!

I see that this is an older message strand, but think it's worth a shot to see if anyone can assist...

My GGG Grandfather was Evan Griffith Evans, who lived in Gerlan.  He was born around 1835 in Malldraeth, Anglesey.  Census (1871) shows that he lived in Glanogwen Parish, and was married to Mary Evans, possibly born in 1833.  We do not have any records of his death and burial.

My sister and I are visiting Bethesda in June, and would love to be able to see a gravesite, and possibly visit the parish church if the family indeed attended there.  Could anyone help with additional information?  It sounds like the records referenced in the initial posting could be helpful in our search.  Thank you!  Kind regards.  Heather (Evans) DeFer, Michigan, US.

Another job well done.  That is definitely him!  Thank you!  I will look that information up.

Hi there!  Visiting Wales in June and am looking for a bit more information on my Great-Grandparents.  Robert John Evans was born on 10 June 1897 in Llanllechid, Caernarvonshire.  His parents were Evan G. Evans and Elizabeth Williams.  He moved to Mountain Ash around 1904.  Married my Great Grandma Sarah Morgan in December 1920 in Pontypridd, and he passed away in Bay City, Michigan (US) in 4 September, 1974.  Sarah Morgan was born 6 August, 1902, in Aberdare.  She passed away 17 October, 1980 in Bay City, Michigan.  Her parents were  George Morgan and Elizabeth Day.

Robert John and Sarah had 7 children.  Muriel, Olwen, Ruth, Beatrice, Robert (my Grandfather), Ronald and Richard (who were twins).  I believe Robert John came to the US in 1927, but haven't found any documentation that would support that such as a passenger list.  I would love to know more about Robert Johns parents, and what Robert and Sarah's lives were like in Mountain Ash.  I believe they lived on Arthur Street at one time, possibly number 4.  Any other information such as where they went to school, and what mine he worked at/what his specific occupation was there would be great.  Am hoping to go and visit some of these places while visiting.  Thank you!!!

Thank you!  That clears up my questions and gives me some new avenues to pursue.  I enjoy a new challenge :-). I appreciate all of your help!

So the questions that pop up now are:

1. We had a Thomas Evans die at Tyn Llwyn in 1841 at 3 years old, and the dad Thomas - possibly dying at Tyn Llwyn in 1842.  Are both accurate?  We believe our line is via Thomas and Ellin - but Evan Griffith is our ancestor, which would make Elizabeth Jones our GGGG Grandmother.  Thoughts or any other findings to support this?
2. Who was Thomas Evans' father?  Evan Thomas or Emmanuel Evans?  Was the patronymic name system still in use at that time?
3. Which churches and cemeteries do we need to visit in Trefdraeth for baptism and burial records?

Thank you so much, and I will start working on these questions as well this weekend.  You have all been so helpful!

Wow, thank you everyone!  We have Thomas Evans listed as born in 1802, but that would be within a year or two - so it sounds reasonable/logical at this point that he is our guy.  Yes, we are descendent of Evan Griffith Evans, and down the line through his son Evan Richard Evans, Robert John Evans, Robert Griffith, Mark Robert Evans (my dad), and then me - Heather (Evans) DeFer.  Sounds like Trefdraeth is where we need to look for gravestones for several family members.  Are there multiple churches in Trefdraeth that we need to look at or did you uncover a specific church parish?  This information has been so helpful, as we prepare to come over and walk in their shoes in June.  I appreciate your help!
