Ever thought of being a detective?

My initial thoughts -

John born c1836, baptised 1835
George born c1824, baptised 1832

Was it more usual to be baptised at a younger age? If the Smith children were done at a later age, why weren't one or more out of Ann (1826), Margaret (1829), Mary (1831) and Thomas (1834) baptised at the same time?
John was the youngest and George was the eldest.

Ann's baptism - dates approximately fit. Baptised on my birthday. Could that be a good sign?!!!

I shall keep researching, not sure of how and why!

Michael, many thanks for all your help. Good luck with your family
Merry Christmas :)

Morning!

No. I'm not convinced about George either in 1841, but the dates fit and George has left home by then. The good news is though later on I know I have the right George Smith through the name Pressey. I had that name through family hearsay before I found Ann married to him in the census and another second marriage in the family also confirms the Smith line.

As for Scotland, I really do wonder if George told the enumerator he was born 'up north' and to us southerners that equates to Scotland. I'm not sure I shall ever solve this part of the jigsaw. Perhaps Ann slipped across the border to the nearest all singing, all dancing maternity hospital for his birth or perhaps Thomas and Ann were living in Scotland when he was born.

I suppose, because I know where George is in 1851 and where his family were later, his whereabouts in 1841 isn't crucial but I like things to fit together. Your comments, especially about the ag lab, make me think that it isn't him in 1841.

It occurs to me that I haven't said that yes, I have proof that Thomas the millwright is Thomas's father.  He is shown on the marriage certificate for George and Ann.  The  entry on the 1841 census for Thomas would seem to fit.

Thank you so much for your thoughts

Hello again Michael

Don't worry, I regard it all as a learning curve!

I do wish it was Archibald and Sebastian with a nice unusual surname rather than George, John, Ann and Thomas Smith! I'll certainly have a look at Genuki, it's amazing the information you can get on the internet.

As for George, birthplace shown as Scotland in 1851 (bit worried about quoting references now!) H0107/1572/656/35 (that worked!)

and shown as 'not born in County' in 1841, Ag Lab, Age 17.
Hundred Easington (N),
Town: Newbottle,
Parish: Houghton le Spring
County:Durham
and on the index it comes up as Jarrow.
Piece 312
Book 17
Folio 32

He died before 1861 (luckily, through family hearsay, I know Ann remarried and that enabled me to find the right George.)

I'd be delighted to find George's birthplace (he was my gg grandfather) and equally dleighted to find anything about Thomas and Ann.

Thank you again, it's really useful to find someone with knowledge of the local area (Essex girl here)

George Smith, eldest son of Thomas and Ann, married Ann Dixon in St Hilda's Church, Parish of St Hilda, Durham, so I guess the family was Anglican? I think I have found George in 1841 on HO107/312/17/1. In 1851 he is in Lambeth with his wife Ann and young family on H0107/1572/656/35 and to complicate matters he is shown as being born in Scotland, but I guess in this case Scotland could mean up north!

How are you getting on with your own family research?

Thanks again for your help - sorry, I can't claim to have millions tucked away in the bank!!!

Sorry, being fairly new to all this I was concerned about the copyright. Thanks for your help. The other children are shown on 1841 HO107/298/8/43 in Westoe, Jarrow.

It had occurred to me that county boundaries and administration may have changed, so it may be worth me posting on the Durham board as well?

Incidentally, the eldest son, George, married Ann Dixon from South Shields, Durham in 1843. With your name, do we have a possible link?!!!

Thanks again

I do wish I was researching more unusual names at times!

The children are George (1824c), Ann (1826c), Margaret (1829c) Mary (1831c), Thomas (1834c) and John (1836c). All the children except George were born in County Durham. As both mum and dad were born in Northumberland, I was hoping they were married in Northumberland and George was born there.

Many thanks for your time and interest.

Northumberland / Help with marriage of Thomas SMITH and Ann please
« on: Monday 11 December 06 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the marriage of Thomas Smith to Ann. In the 1851 census, Thomas, a millwright, is shown as b 1796c in Northumberland Wark and Ann as b 1798c in Northumberland Long Houghton.

In 1841 they are living with 5 children born between 1836 and 1826 and an elder one had already left home so I guess they would have been married about 1822ish??

Not much to go on, is it an impossible task? Any help gratefully received!

Thanks Teddy.

I was wondering if you looked at Guernsay with screwed up eyes in the dark while still half asleep if it could possibly look like a Norfolk place name!!!

Take care
Teresa
