I found something in the Overseers Papers that links your Francis Deacon with Brimpton.

29 March 1680  Bond of Daniel SMITH [ + ] of Brimpton, cordwainer, and Francis DECON [+DEACON] of Lambourn, collarmaker, in the sum of £40 to Overseer(s):  William GALE and John PEMBROOKE re any manner of costs, etc should Daniel SMITH, his wife and children become chargeable to Brimpton.  Witnesses: Ralph MAY [ + ] John ARUNDELL [ x ] Joseph GODDIN [ + ]

Thanks for that Sloe Gin, interesting.  I wonder whether perhaps Daniel Smith of Brimpton married one of Daniel and Jane's two surviving daughters, it would explain the bond.  They could of course be other family members.  I shall have to have a look at the Brimpton records when I get a chance at an LDS Family History Centre.  As you say though it does link Francis with Brimpton whatever the relationship.

I think people have been using the Berks Marriage Index.  I don't think it's complete yet (insofar as it ever can be) and I don't think I have the most up-to date version, but here goes.

There's a marriage at Brimpton between Francis DEACON and Jane HASSELL 27 Nov 1649, so that's where that's come from. (I very much doubt it is the Francis I mentioned as he would only be 12 at the time.)  However, there's another Brimpton marriage for a Francis DEACON in 1607, so it looks as though they are a Brimpton family, and I would want to look at the Brimpton PRs before adding any of these.

Brimpton PRs don't start until 1678, earlier entries are from what is available from the BTs.

There is a Francis and Jane Deacon baptising children in Lambourn between 1650 and 1672, with burials for a Francis in 1706 and Jane in 1681.  The burial for Jane does say wife of Francis of Lambourn so is obviously her.  Their two sons named Francis (a third was apparently a daughter) were buried as infants in the parish, both entries say son of Francis.

The Lambourn baptisms do say Francis and Jane and the first is Jan 1649/50 suggesting possibly if the Brimpton marriage is correct it was a shotgun wedding.  That said Brimpton is a bit of distance from Lambourn but not impossible.

I don't know though where Francis came from originally, could be Brimpton but I'm not sure if I've looked at the available BTs yet.  Familysearch have digitised them so when I can get to one of the FHCs at some point I need to have a look.  I've been researching the Lambourn family for about 10 years but not got much further due to lack of access to the Berkshire records. :-\

As Sloe Gin says, the Berkshire Marriage Index is far from complete, I think it is up to v4 at the moment.

From memory it closed in 2012 after the remaining services were moved to the new Queen Elizabeth hospital in Edgbaston in about October 2011.  From memory I think that some of the original Victorian buildings haven't been demolished but have been kept as part of the redevelopment.  There definitely were some still standing the other year when I drove past but haven't been that way for a year or so.

Have a look at the 'Find a Will' site, wills are £1.50 plus I guess a charge for using a visa card.

"Find a Will" are only post 1858 Wills from the Probate Registries, those on the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies website are pre 1858.

Hi Lee

Unfortunately I've not come across those names in my research.  There aren't that many Easterbys about in the London area, I think its a Yorkshire name so more prevalent up there.  There seem to be a few pockets of them in London associated with specific families but not much else, if memory serves me correctly as its been a while since I've looked at that particular line.

Jill - the homepage for the Wills site says the price is now £10 - see https://shop.buckscc.gov.uk/s4s/WhereILive/Council?pageId=2347&pid=36803787-1a6a-4c46-bbfb-a5ad00f89b6b&supId=c988f85e-be98-4bf3-b184-a5ad00efd350&bcgId=fcea1611-2a26-4a1d-a4a6-b480f7423e14.  They appear to have done the same as Hertfordshire Archives and greatly increased the price. :-\  Sounds like they've not updated the site correctly if the basket shows £5 but they should be £10.

If you are able to visit a LDS Family History Centre they do have digital copies of I think a lot of them on Familysearch but they're restricted access to the FHCs.  I found them not that easy to find on the digital films using the Archives references but a lot cheaper.

Pheno my original post was from Jan 2010, research has moved on since then. ;)  I've marked the topic as completed now just for that reason.

LeeH resurrected the post this morning I would imagine finding it via a google search.  At the time there were no responses, I've found out more myself.

Hi Lee

Welcome to Rootschat.

John and Sarah Easterby's children were:

Eliza Elizabeth (1801-?)
Francis John (1806-1876)
Harriot (1809-1873)
Sarah (1811-1890)
Matilda Hopton (1814-1893)

If this is the same family you are researching, you may not be aware but John Easterby died in Sydney, Australia, in 1844 having been convicted of receiving stolen goods in August 1814 at Surrey Assizes and sentenced to 14 years transportation.  He served his 14 year sentence and received his ticket to leave in Aug 1828.  He doesn't appear to have re-married in Australia (what happened to Sarah I've yet to find out) but he died in the Benevolent Asylum in Sydney in Jan 1844.  In 1817 John petitioned the Governor for mitigation of sentence but it wasn't granted.  The signature on that document is almost identical to the one on the 1800 marriage entry to Sarah Lewis, suggesting that marriage was indeed the correct couple.

Sarah Easterby (1811-1890) was my 3xGreat Grandmother.
