Northamptonshire / Re: Wellingborough DEATH / BURIAL
« on: Tuesday 21 January 14 01:14 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Carole.
Thanks for the info!

I was aware W'boro involved many villages - I know the Barkers were in Earls Barton, another sister of Susan's named Jane (Green) was in Irthlingborough (as was their brother Belah)  then Rushden, Their sister Charlotte (Webb) was in Northampton itself.
Susan was one of 19 children so almost all of the Fairey, Fairy, Farey clan around Northants are related and belong in my family tree!

I am just getting back to the family tree after several years of spasmodic forays so it's a case of Famliarising myself again with names & catching up with what's new!

Northamptonshire / Wellingborough DEATH / BURIAL
« on: Tuesday 21 January 14 00:13 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings from New Zealand

I have noticed on Free BMD that one SUSAN FAIREY  died Dec Qtr 1937 3b/151 aged 75 Wellingborough.
My Susan was born 1862 in Riseley Beds and my last "sighting" of her was as the Informant at her mother's death in Nov 1914 in Riseley.

I know that Susan's sister Phoebe married George Barker in 1881 Wellingborough and that both George & Phoebe died in W'boro.
Another sister Caroline married William Allen in W'boro and she died in 1901 aged 34.

I'm presuming that Susan also resided in the area sometime after 1914.

Is someone able to give guidance as to Electoral Rolls or other info which might help me these folk before their deaths?
Any cemetery searches available online?
Is anyone connected to the Fairey, Barker or Allen lines that may help me define the family further?

Very grateful for any hints/guidance/assistance!
TIA

Cornwall / WILLCOVE - Help please?
« on: Sunday 19 January 14 04:05 GMT (UK)  »
Kia Ora
Greeting from New Zealand.
I am seeking help regarding the death of SAMUEL MEDDLETON  a 26 year old labourer who drowned at Stonehouse creek near the Govt Emigration Depot on/about 13 August 1865.

His death cert gives no clue as to the wife who he apparently farewelled at the train station. She was apparently going to Torquay to friends awaiting confinement.

James Dodd spotted him in the water and the body was recovered and taken to the Dead House at Stonehouse Workhouse by the County Constable PG Watts.  The WMN reports of the Inquest state Thomas Kevill was a witness who saw  Samuel earlier. He had been drinking but was not drunk.

I am wondering if :
he might have been given a pauper's burial perhaaps in Willcove? Probably Presbyterian or or  C of E?
he was buried with folk from the Workhouse  and if so where is he likely to be buried?
the wife's family variously  BOYLE, BOLE, BOAL  or Samuel himself might be recorded in any docs at the village? He worked at Keyham Steam factory.
a daughter Sarah might have been enrolled at a local school?

I have previously posted on the Devon site not realising the significance of WILLCOVE' s location.

i'd be very grateful for any guidance/assistane.
TIA

Hi Rosie & Cemetery Friends
Just to clarify Ford Park has checked their records for various spellings- no luck!
Plymouth Library found the Inquest Reports and checked Stoke Demerel - no luck. St Georges no longer exists apparently.

Yes you may be correct that I am barking up the wrong family tree with the folk in Cornwall. Just seems a coincidence that John & Elizabeth named a child Samuel  just a year later.  ::)

All I know for certain is that Maggie sailed for NZ with their elder child and without Samuel Snr or a baby!  Perhaps I just have to accept that Samuel's drowning was an unfortunate coincidence - right place, right time frame, right occupation, name  and age but no further proof!
Unfortunately NZ abandoned Money Orders years ago once Eftpos & Credit/Debit cards became popular. Bank cheques in English pounds are often 2-3 times the cost of the service!
Thanks for your help!

Thank you Rosie for Samuel's details. I hadn't realised he had died young!
I think Samuel Snr had a brother named John so I'll need to get further info from censii to get his age and place of birth. I am really seeking to prove that I have the right Samuel Snr who drowned in 1865  and it's possible that his wife decided to leave him behind when she sailed about 6 weeks later. It would be nice to think the baby was with other family if that is the case!  Many emigrants chose to leave family behind until they were established so it wouldn't be unusual!
At the very extreme it is possible that Samuel the tyounger was named in memory of the Samuel who drowned.

Thank you also Cemetery Friends for your advice! Plymouth Record Office and Ford Park have already been searched to no avail. Witnesses at the Inquest stated he had been drinking but was not drunk. IF I am right he would have had a new baby and a trip to the other side of the world to look forward to but of course both matters may have caused him concern as well - there is nothing to indicate it was suicide in the documents.
Maybe this will always remain a mystery :(
I'll search the daughters of John & Elizabeth to see if there are any clues!
Many thanks to you both for your guidance & input!

Devon / Re: History Room Plymouth Library UPDATE & Help Required! PLEASE!
« on: Wednesday 15 January 14 01:45 GMT (UK)  »
Happy New Year All.
I am delighted to report the following confirmed by Death Cert and 2 newspaper reports :
Samuel Meddleton aged "about" 26 drowned at Stonehouse Creek near the GOVT Emigration Depot
on or about 13 Aug 1865.
His wife had earlier travelled by train to Torquay to be with friends during her pending confinement.
The "wife's name is not mentioned in any document.

I have 2 major queries and am hoping someone maybe able to help!

1. Where might SAMUEL MEDDLETON (METTLETON? ) be buried? He is NOT apparently at Ford Park nor at Stoke Damerel Churchyard. It has been suggested he might be buried at St Georges. I think he was Presbyterian so probably no burial register? Quite possibly a pauper's grave?

2. I think he had a common law wife Margaret Boyle /Bole/Boal. I have found a birth registration for a Samuel M Meddleton Dec 1866 Launceston 5c/27  but that is too late  as Margaret sailed from England on 30 Sept 1865. Might she have given the  baby up for adoption and it's birth was regstered a year later?

I'd be very grateful for any assistance/guidance from a local on any likely places to look for the answers to my queries! ???
Thank you
Dale

Lotsa 4 leaf clovers to you! I hope you find them with other family members so you have a broader base to "invade" Irish records!
Search for Ros Davies site  for Michael & George anyway!
All the best for the festive season.

Hi
I have an interest in the Boyle family from Co Down but cannot verify your information.
A George Boyle married in the March Qtr of 1851 Islington District.3/206.
If you are lucky they may be together on the 1851 census. That should give you info as to place of birth etc.

If his parents moved to England they might be on the 1841/1851 census with George perhaps.

Have you a copy of the Marriage certificate?  That should confirm his father's name, occupation etc.
Then you need to start looking for Michael Boyle in various Irish family history sites which you can google. Boyle may be spelt Boal or Bole or with an S at the end.
Good luck
Dale.

Hi Aghadowey & Vronlady
I am very grateful for your input! I am particularly interested when I get familiar townlands/parishes etc as part of my "confirmation" process. Ballyblack and Crossnamuckley fit that criteria!

I guess my next step is to gain copies of certs and/or Baptism entries (if available)
Any advice as to how and where? I don't add names to Family Tree until I have "proof".
Thanks again !
Dale
