The records are kept at the National Records at Kew London,I remember years ago looking at them but I was amazed given they were prison records that there were missing years,I see your man in not there in the 1881 census, there will be somebody give you a better answer soon,as I say it was some years since I looked at them.

Well if that is right about fishermen in the records it would seem that it is a fair bet that the James Banton who died in 1874 in the records may well be the right one, just how many James Bantons died in 1874 and at sea,as a poster has said sometimes fishermen became seaman for short periods to make more money.

I think you are right Fishermen were in those days,I believe were not in the records if they died at sea, merchant seaman and RN sailors and of course the Coast Guard were,I wonder how old the Grimsby Telegraph is, that would be the local paper ,I found two of mine in local Devon papers and sometimes if the body was found you get a inquest but they are rare.

It is possible that the death was carried in the local paper,a search for that might give you all you need,I have several fishermen in my tree, and the amazing thing is many could not swim.

I do not think 6 will be any good the experts say I have to have 5,I have been doing my family history for many years before even Ancestry showed it's face and you had to go to local records offices, I used what would be FTM 1 before Ancestry bought the company ,the problem is if I try to export a gedcom to say FTM 10 the tree is messed up husbands are not with wives and only one child shown, believe me it is a complete mess I suppose I should have updated years ago but that early FTM showed you the whole tree it was very simple to use,but now we have newer versions of windows it will not work on them,Vista is ok ,I am looking on Ebay but when you have FTM 14 being sold for £20 FTM 5 must be worth £2 so people are not putting that on,but I will keep  looking.
