Renfrewshire / Re: Scottish Directories
« on: Saturday 25 February 17 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
I cannot state specific knowledge, but a few thoughts. I do not know which directories you are looking at, but base my comments on those I have used in my researches.

One clue would be the frequency of publication. Also there are often ammendments to be found, usually at the start of the directory, or a list of changes in some instances since the last edition. Trade entries, especially advertisers are the most likely to be up to date, as they generate the income to the publisher. Residential lists are likely to have least priority.

A directory would take agreat deal of work to assemble, there are examples in the publisher's forwords of them bemoaning the extent of the task, so it would be understandable that subsequent issues would be based on the first and ammended as changes became known. Again this would prioritise the trade entries, and would explain out of date information still being retained.

Lists of council officers are often foundand could be compared to other historical references ( every town will have a list of mayors and dates) Other tables and articles would certainly indicate the latest time of ammendment.

In short, I would suggest that unless it is an advertiser, then inclusion, or absence, may well not be contemporaneous with publication. Perhaps others have an opinion.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: St Peter's RC Parish Lancaster
« on: Friday 24 February 17 18:24 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks, but as that page starts with
"N.B. Baptismal and other sacramental archives are not kept centrally or in these archives. Enquiries for such records should be made at the parish where the sacraments were actually received. "
I imagine I may need to go elsewhere (such as the parish itself).

I know that is obvious, but having on occaision had replies from churches indicating they felt such enquiries a nuisance, I was hoping to find if somebody knew of any other route before I approach them.

Thanks for your trouble in doing your search though.  ;)

I am aware of earlier records held in the Archives at Preston, but does anyone know how or where to access records after 1855?

Thanks if you can answer this.

I too cannot make out the occupation, but if you have access to a better copy the following link might help you recognise the entry. It is an index of historical German occupations and descriptions of them (albeit in German)

A very quick attempt as no-one else seems to have replied. I am sure better could be done.
Hopefully there is chance that the original might be found.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Knolwedge of Bradfords geography?

Although you couldn't get away from the town, (and the tannery is awfully close, hopefully down-wind) they certainly had much larger plots of land shown on the map compared to the terraces around. There appear to be only 11 houses and some degree of wealth can be inferred from the voters list of 1861 which lists several residents.

Go to   https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/415847/432933/13/100401

which should show the town plan of Bradford 1891.
Nelson Square is indeed under what is now the College on Carlton Street. It must have been fairly new in 1861 as it does not appear on the 1852 plan.
I have tried to attach some screen shots of the map to help locate it for you.
