Sligo / CRYAN FAMILY
« on: Saturday 07 April 18 16:36 BST (UK)  »
Have just found out my great great grandfather JAMES CRYAN, (1814-1877) Master Cooper, was born in Sligo. He married Mary Neilson (1817-1898). I know he died in Sligo after which his wife and two daughters moved to Scotland.  Daughter Sarah (born 1836 or 1842) and daughter Winifred (1857-1886).  I have the history in Scotland but would be interested in finding out anything about the Irish part.  I don't know if there were other children.  With large gap between two daughters' birthdates it seems likely there were more.

Does anyone have information on this family please?

Thanks again Falkyrn.  I've googled The Columbia Centre so will now send them an email.

Thanks Falkyrn for the information.  Interesting reading but doesn't look likely that I'll trace the ancestors.  Canadian records are hard to use as they expect you to know such things as the name of the ship and date, etc.  Quite ridiculous of course.  If I knew that, I wouldn't need to look it up at all.

Does anyone know how I could find records of ancestors from Islay moving to Canada in the mid 1800's.  Would there be any immigration records in Scotland that far back?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Isk:  Thanks for your suggestion re the Mitchell Library.  I went there four years ago and got lots of information.  As I said though, I have a full free day in Edinburgh to search the records.  Any time in Glasgow is reserved for shopping, shopping, shopping....

That's a thought.  I'll be taking a tour around the Highlands so not sure I'll want to lug a laptop around with me. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.

I'm hoping to visit Register House in Edinburgh later this year.  Since we'll be using computers to search, are we still limited to the dates, i.e. 100 years for births, 75 for marriages and 50 for deaths?
For instance, will I be able to view a birth certificate in 1920?

Thanks for your help.
