Down / L. McAnulty
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 02:17 BST (UK)  »
I have a copy of a letter dated March 17, 1921 from L. McAnulty, 1 Church St., Newry to her cousin, Nell McSephney, Springhill Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am trying to find the forename and maiden name for L. McAnulty. I believe that her mother and my great grandmother Margaret Hannah nee Dougherty were sisters. I am also trying to find the full name of L. McAnulty's mother.
In a 1962 letter from Maureen McAnulty b. 1919 in Newry, she states that her grandmother (name unknown) died in 1921 and that her mother died 10 months later in 1922. Maureen also says that she had one brother, name unknown, b. 1917 and that he had 12 children born between 1945-1961. She also said that her father remarried and died in 1959. Her father's only sister Sarah died in 1961. Maureen's father may have lived at 70 Stream St. Newry. Does anyone know his first name.
If anyone can fill in some of the blanks, it would be greatly appreciated.

Canada Lookup Request / Re: Descendants of Robert DORMAN
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 01:58 GMT (UK)  »
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca
Soldiers of the First World War
has a Charles Dorman b. 1895 with next of kin Sarah Dorman. This may give you a starting point as where to look in Canada. His attestation papers say he was born in Halifax, England. It appears that he enlisted in Valcartier, Quebec. If this is the correct Charles, you can order his complete service file through the above site. I checked the 1901 and 1911 census of Canada and none of the Dormans that you named are on the census. If you have an approximate year when they came to Canada you can check the passenger lists for destination through the above site or through Ancestor's on Board through Find my Past.
Another site that you can use to find people, phone numbers and addresses in Canada is Canada 411. You will have to google for the web address.
Hope this helps some.

How sure are you of the dates and names. Did the family remain in Fredericton or NB. Fanny is usually a shortened name for Frances or Hannah. I have found some sites that you may want to check out. If you work backwards from the information that you have confirmed you may be able to access information from these sites that will lead you to a baptism.

NB Genealogy Society

www.collectionscanada.gc.ca

You can access 1851, 1881, 1901, 1911 Census

Hannah Roe age 69
Harriet Roe age 36
William Roe age 39
Fredericton, District York NB

this site has links to many NB databases including York Genealogy Society that covers Fredericton.

Also look under Rowe as an alternate spelling.
Hope this helps.

Down / Re: Hanna's of Desert/Newry
« on: Friday 27 February 09 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
Through the Roz Davies site I found  the following:
Hanna, Newry, lived in Desert townland in 1851, married Reid. The reference for this is Old Families of Newry page 228 by RSJ Clarke. Would anyone have access to this book and be able to tell me if there is anything else written about the Hanna family on this page. This could be my ggranparents, Abraham Hanna and Ellen Reid.
I found what I think is Abraham's death certificate through the pilot project. Would obtaining the actual death certificate give my additional information and would it be worth the cost. I live in Canada so I would have to do request this information by mail.
Also I have been unable to determine where Desert would be in present day Newry. I would like to determine if there are Hanna's still living there.
Any help would be appreciated.

Down / Hanna's of Desert/Newry
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 01:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Hanna, Reid, Dougherty and Keenan families of the Desert/Newry area. My ggrandfather Abraham Hanna b. about 1860 and g grandmother Margaret Dougherty b. about 1861 were married in Scotland in 1880 and immigrated to Canada in 1904. I have traced the family back to the Desert/Newry area of Co. Down. Abraham's parents were Abraham Hanna b. about 1823 d. 1885 and Ellen Reid. Margaret's parents were Peter Dougherty and Catherine Keenan. I know that two of the Dougherty children, Elizabeth and Peter were born in Donaghmore, Co. Down about 1865 and 1868. They were farmers, miners and general laborers and continued the occupations in Scotland and Canada. Any information regarding the above families would be greatly appreciated.
