Ireland / Irish Marriages Pre-1841
« on: Friday 14 September 07 16:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone  :)

Can anyone please answer this query of mine? I've looked all over the internet for an answer and I'm still not sure what the situation is  :-\

My gtx3 grandfather was called Henry James Hayden. He was born in Ireland c1815. His wife was called Sarah Grey, also born in Ireland c1815. They appear in the English 1841 census as being already married. So their marriage dates to pre-1841 and, I assume, it took place in Ireland as they don't appear in the civil registration from 1837 onwards. No children appear until 1844 (as far as I can tell). The only clue to their whereabouts in Ireland is in the 1881 census where Sarah Hayden (nee Grey) gives her place of birth as 'Ireland, Dublin'. Their one child was baptised as a Protestant in the parish church of Wordsley, Staffordshire.

Assuming they married in Southern Ireland between say 1835 and 1840, are there local parish records still existing in Ireland that would've documented the marriage?

Thanks

Rich  :D

Thanks for the offer  :D  Yes, I do have the photo. I'll rescan it tomorrow and either try and post it on here or mail it to you  :)

Have you actually got the photograph ...if so scan it at say 1200dpi or even more and  you can email me the copy( It may be too big a file  to post ) and I 'll see if I retrieve any more info ...it's currently only 200 dpi ...it may be worth a try ... Tend to agree with Dee... looks a bit like it may say My Eld...  (est?)

I think, as others have said, it's just too badly faded to be 100% sure of anything.

This photo shows the daughter, Elizabeth Wenham, when she was about 25. I think Elizabeth Wenham is the baby in the mystery photo I posted above. Anyone see any likeness?  :-\

LOL   ;D   She is a perky little thing isn't she?  ;) and the baby looks quite cheerful too. Seriously, and yes, I suppose she could be 40.  :-\
It's so hard to say.

I have no idea what the word is  ???  but the lady could be 40 or thereabouts, don't forget that alot of people had their teeth removed (or they fell out  :o  ) quite early in life, and a toothless mouth is very ageing to the face.

The rest of the lady's face looks quite young.  Going back to have another look at the photo now  ;D

It does a little  :D  I'm sure that I can see a 'W' at the start and an 'M' at the end...  :o  But then maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see  :-[

Thank you for trying :)

Thanks to everyone who's looked at the post and offered an opinion! I really appreciate it. I've scanned the complete back of the photo, with the writing just visible at the very top. I think the photo shows my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Grace Wenham, with her parents(?). They certainly lived near Brighton, where the photo was taken. I don't have any other photos of the parents, so I can't say if it's them or not. I've included a scan of the front of well. Elizabeth Grace Wenham was born in 1872, at which time her parents would've been 46 (John Wenham) and 40 (Frances Wenham). The woman in the photo doesn't look 40 to me!  :o

Can anyone make out what this word is? I think it's either 'mother' or 'Wenham' but it's very faint and partially worn, and it could be neither. It's the only clue to the sitter's identity and I'd really appreciate anyone's help  :)

Thanks

Rich  :)
