Thanks Rick.  Any information on Charlotte's family prior to marriage and also on Ann.  I have Charlotte after marriage up to and including her death and will but have not been able to find anything prior to marriage.

Hi Ricky & Barbara

Yes he did marry Mary Middleton supposedly here in Adelaide on 20 Feb 1853 but I have yet to find any actual proof of that date in Marriages here in South Australia.

His death certificate indicates he came to Australia around early 1850's (sorry wrong date in earlier post) but just says born Norfolk.
The Family Trees on Ancestry would be of people related to us (he's my husband's 3xg grandfather).

His children were :
John George; Mary; Emily Jane; Margaret Coromandel; Eliza Fanny; Henry Thomas; Adelaide; Randolph Edward; Violet; Maud Mary; Fanny Ada; George Middleton.

Not sure if that might help with any names in the Census.  Mary's parents were George and Margaret.  Adelaide obviously comes from the city and Coromandel is from the name of the ship the Middleton's came to Adelaide on.

Unfortunately that is all we have to go on because I have yet to be able to find him as a passenger on a ship.

I did wonder about the Quaker bit BUT I don't actually know much about them.  Yes, I will check the 1820 marriage entry to see.  I guess it is not beyond the realms of possiblity though as a gg grandfather who was Prussian Lutheran (his parents having migrated to Australia because of persecution) married an Irish Catholic girl.  Apparently even though their children were brought up as Lutherans his family were not happy.

We've crossed posts there David but I think you are right the Martha Gurney Barker is pretty telling and even the birth of Thomas in Houghton lines up with a Martha Gurney in Houghton.
Also as you point out member submissions are notoriously unreliable.  There is one for my great aunt which is completely wrong - I even know where it came from initially but despite my having contacted the person who submitted it, it is still there perpetuating the story.

Yes I think it is this member stuff that has 'foxed' me as you say.
This is what I have found so far -
Thomas 1823   Houghton, , Bedford, England Joseph Barker/Mary Gurney - Submitted by member

Esther - two references IGI - 11 JUL 1824   Stotfold, Bedford, England -Joseph Barker/Mary AND one via Pedigree Resource File which gives parents as Joseph Barker and Mary Anne Rowley (with the 1819 marriage date) and a Christening date of 11 Aug 1824 rather than July

Joseph b 1831 has two references - IGI and PRF

Martha b 1824 has two references - IGI and PRF the second of which makes no sense to have her mother as Mary Ann Rowley when her middle name seems to clearly be Gurney

Anna b 1826 IGI/PRF

Mary b 1929 IGI/PRF

The same person also has Mary Anne Rowley born 1798, Stotford, Beds to Joseph Rowley and Elizabeth nee Smith and there is certainly a similar IGI reference.

There is a Mary Gurney b c 1797 Bedfordshire And Hertfordshire Quaker Quarterly Meeting, , Bedford, England to Thomas and Hannah which is I suppose a possibility given that Mary and Joseph have children with those names.

Oh dear, even more confusing.  Looks like I'll have to find some certificates for B,D and M's

Thankyou so much for your help.  I think we are on the right track with Gurney.

I've just found a birth for Thomas in 1823 in Houghton, Beds to Joseph and Mary Gurney (I had him but had his mother as Ann).

David, That's brilliant.  I think you may be right, I was just coming to that conclusion myself that Joseph might have remarried. Although I have an 1819 date for his marriage to Mary Ann Rowley (from IGI) which complicates it a bit.
Esther Auchant (sic) was my gg grandmother having married William Hanchant.

Ireland / Thomas and Bridget Collison
« on: Tuesday 06 January 09 09:48 GMT (UK)  »
We have a Bridget Collison daughter of Thomas who arrived in Adelaide, South Australia in approx. 1855 or 56.  Do you have an ancestor of that name who you can't trace?  Have been unable to find her on any shipping register and the only indicator is her marriage certificate of 1856 which does not specify a county.

I'll have a look at that David.  I have a date of marriage in 1819 but I will recheck that.
Thankyou
